Was 73 this morning. Shot green for the first time! Didn't manage to get any tests past +5 last night, but I his Nadirs have been pretty late so I'm a little more confident shooting this time around. I gave him a can of Fancy Feast Creamy Delights that I wasn't sure about (my mom got me 3 cans by accident) but apparently it's just the Classic Pates with milk (can values are the same as the regular salmon flavor - 2% carbs) so I figured if it does have slightly more sugar, it's a good time to try it and flatten the curve (but from what I've read, it's okay for sugar kitties). I have some honey, oral syringe, some dry DM and 15 extra strips in case of anything (I'm at my mom's for the day).

Wish him luck! :)

Off topic - my grandmother's dog just got diagnosed with diabetes yesterday, so I'm trying to learn about canine diabetes now to help her. Joined a Facebook group for that but not sure if there's a canine equivalent to this forum.

Congratulations shooting your first green! On behalf of the Lantus forum, I present to you the coveted Balls of Steel!
Start off with getting a +1 since this is the lowest you have shot.

I recall shooting my first green - without fanfare...but I was a nervous wreck and checked on her a lot ... she went up...figures! Congrats on your first green AMPS! Exciting isn't it?

Thank you guys! He was at 4.6 at +2. He's been hitting Nadir between +8 and +13 most days (some days its around +6 but only on flat days)

Looking good! I hope it's a nice long green surf for Jack today. It's looking like he likes the 3 unit dose :cat: This is the 5th cycle and it looks like the depot filled.

We should come up with another award for peeps doing this FD dance with a baby! You are doing a great job juggling :)

Good job. Hoping for a nice long green surf.

There are 2 canine FB groups, you might want to check both. And like for awhile.

Have a friend with dog who has it. But she is to overwhelmed with the groups. I asked her to ask them to let me join so I could help her with the food at least. I know nothing about dog diabetes. She has moved switching insulin like crazy. Listening to get and pharmacists on how it's only good for 28 days. She's been throwing it out. I told her not to, give it to me instead. There are so many here who could use it. But no, they know better.

I feel like she is the kind of person who will trust the vet too much but she's also cheap, so I should be able to convince her not to throw it out so quickly, especially since it's not an insulin that she can get from the regular pharmacy.

I joined the Canine Diabetes Support and Information group but I don't know what the other one is.

We definitely should have a group for that!

His +4 was 58, so I gave him his second can of food to see if I can feed the curve to prevent bouncing. Will check again at +5 to make sure he isn't going hypo since he usually doesn't go down this early

Congrats!

Too funny, I was just thinking before I saw this, that exact term is what you would need to shoot a number that low,:nailbiting: I was wondering if typing that would be inappropriate, apparently NOT, lol.:joyful:

Thank you guys :) hoping that he's not just going low because he's at my mom's (his old home). He still hasn't come around to the dog at my house and spends a lot of time under the bed

Good shooting this morning! :D He's not used to greens. Neko hid under the bed the first times she was in green. But that will change for Jack. I like what I'm seeing.

I usually wait 15-20 minutes. Is he symptomatic? Any signs of wooziness or other strange behavior? How much HC did you feed? Generally, a small amount is best so he doesn't get full and refuse to eat if you need to feed again.

+7 was 41 so I gave HC food!! How soon do I recheck?

Did you also give a bit of simple sugar such as Karo? Simple sugars begin absorbing when it hits the tongue raising the BG quickly. Gravy will keep it up for a bit but both will wear off. If you didn't give Karo, it's OK, the gravy should be helping by now. Since you're at +7 Lantus, you should be heading back up shortly. Right now you just want to bump him back up into safe territory, not send him to the moon.

I gave him 10 pieces of dry DM. He's at 3.3 now. Should I still give honey or corn syrup (is that the same as Karo?)

No symptoms at all. He's extra social and chilling by the window with the other cats.

Also took out a can of his usual food but left it out for all the cats. I'm not worried about him overeating since he's timid and the other two cats dominate him and steal most of the food (I usually feed him separately when I'm here at my mom's, so that he gets enough before I let the other cats in).

Carbs take 20-30 minutes to go from the plate to the blood stream. 15 minutes is too soon to test again. Don’t fill him up. HC can wear off and he could drop again. Next time, don’t give dry. It takes longer to work out of the system. Keep some high carb canned food handy instead. A tsp or two of dpgravy should be enough to bring him up.

Could you update your subject line to show he’s no longer low. And by the way, we only call it hypo if there are hypo symptoms. Cats not on insulin can test in the 40’s, we just don’t want cats on insulin there.

Congrats on the reduction earned, and please test again 1/2 hour after the last test to make sure he is still up.

Title has been updated. Wasn't aware that 40-50 wasn't hypo, that makes me feel a lot less nervous about tonight!

Will get rid of the dry and have gravy food for next time.

+7.5 and +8 were both 59 and +9 was 61

40-50 can be hypo if cats are showing symptoms there. It’s a bit ECID. And it’s definitely unique per cat in how can carb sensitive they are and what it takes to bring them up from a low. Keep good notes on when and how much you feed to intervene. Those notes will help you learn what Jack needs.

Here is an interesting post by Libby http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/how-low-is-too-low.142105/

Nice surfing Jack!
Really good to know! I think Jack is happy in the 40s (obviously won't encourage it though) and responds really easily to small amounts of food. One time my mom gave him 4-5 Temptations and he went up 150 points in 2hrs :/

The first couple times that Benny hit low numbers I panicked and fed him more HC snacks than I should have - and watched his numbers spike like crazy! I soon learned to be watchful, and if it was around meal time, just feed his regular meal - and keep testing! He never went terribly low (at least I never caught a terribly low number!), and actually seemed to be at his liveliest when he was in 50s and 60s, but even at his lowest BG of 42, he didn't show symptoms. Still, it's worrisome and I never was nonchalant about it, just learned not to freak out. :)
