Hales + Comet

Member Since 2019
I took Comet in on Monday because he had stopped eating and found out that he was diabetic. We started on insulin yesterday and he was given an appetite stimulant. When we go home he ate his dinner but this morning when I gave him breakfast he only nibbled a little. I called the vet because he was also gagging and took him in to get anti-nausea medication. After getting home he is still gagging and refuses to eat. Per vet orders, I will force feed a bit so we can do insulin tonight but I am concerned that something may be seriously wrong. I am extremely new to all this and every little change in his behavior has my anxiety all over the place.

I am not sure if anyone has experience with this or knows why this may be happening.

Did they test for ketones? Do you have any ketone strips to test with?

No, I do not and the vet said she would not be surprised if they tested and it was positive because he hasn't been eating but decided not to test (a bit more than I could afford at the moment) and said we should be fine if we can figure out his insulin now.

Ketones can get serious quickly and can be fatal of not treated. Ketone strips are $7-15 dollars. Not expensive.
You do them in fresh urine.

You should also be able to get them at any pharmacy, if you don't want to wait for online delivery.

Testing for ketones is important, especially if not eating.

Thank you I got him to eat a bit last night but we are back where we started and he is refusing to eat again this morning

If the vet suspected ketones and didn't test for them, what the hell???! If he had ketones he needs to stay overnight of its anything more than a trace. He would have to be put on an iv drip

Update: got him to eat this morning enough that I can give insulin. I'm going to call the vet when they open and see if they want me to bring him in. He seems to be just really picky with what he will eat which is not usual Comet behavior. I'll e sure to ask if they think it might be pancreatitis and request they check for ketones. Thank you this is so stressful but you have all been so helpful
