I’m glad to have found this forum and wealth of information on something that I knew nothing about until a few days ago. After noticing rapid weight loss over the course of a couple weeks, our feisty 10-year-old Maine coon suddenly became completely lethargic... I honestly thought he wouldn’t make it through the night. We got him to our vet within a day, where his test results showed the presence of ketones and inflammation of the kidneys, among other concerning results. From there, it was on to the specialist where our kitty is currently in critical condition. His heart rate was very low and temp had dropped from 99 at the initial vet visit to 95 at the specialist. After receiving an altogether overload of information, we now wait to get more information from diagnostics to learn whether it’s DKA causing his other abnormal test readings or if it’s DKA coupled with something else.
I am still shocked at how suddenly this seemed to escalate. It’s hard not to feel guilty for not catching it earlier before he declined to the current state.
Hopefully, we will get some good news tomorrow and some clear guidance on what’s next. It’s a struggle to absorb all of the information and feel confident that we’re making the right choices, what’s best for kitty, and not spending a fortune all for naught. Hugging my other fur babies extra tight tonight and praying for everyone out there going through their own version of this story.
