Advise for possible NS and Novolin R use for sick Kitty Preshot 82BG

What would you suggest for a dose?
I am a bit leery because his BG is doing unexpected things.
Normally after a green # we would be dealing with a rise for PMPS and possibly pink level or red level, never green level.

Earlier I gave him a small syringe of food and he fought more than you would think a sick cat would.
 
I agree with Wendy’s suggestion of 3u. What do you think about that?

Since you’ve stalled, it can act as a dose reduction. Normally, when we stall, we shoot the full dose but since he’s been sick, it’s fine in this situation to shoot a reduced dose after a stall.

I want to be sure you are are feeling ok with handling this yourself as I am about to be off the board for the night. If you aren’t, we need to come up with Plan B.

ECID on the R scale. I started low and worked out what worked for Neko. Any R I did for a no shot was because of a fur shot :oops:. The only deliberate NS I did were when she was in ER.
 
Okay, i just saw Wendy's suggestion.
I am a speed reader.
So I tend to read nouns and verbs when I am going fast.
Anxiety tends to make me read too fast,

That’s definitely a NS.

This is a good example of why, when kitty is doing well and eating, that stalling to see if numbers will come up can backfire.

When we are new, shooting lower and lower (but never below 50 human meter) can be scary and so we tend to stalling hope to shoot the rise. But that doesn’t always happen so it’s usually best, if the BG is safe to shoot and the CG has ample supplies and is available/able to shoot, to go ahead and shoot and feed a good meal so numbers will rise.

Even tonight, if he was keeping baby food down and would eat more, it would have been good to shoot the 82 with a reduced dose and give him a little more food with some gravy.

I hope he can keep food down; please keep an eye on his ketones.

ETA: remember to reduce his dose :)

Been out all day and was just checking in before hitting the sack. I'm so very sorry to hear Bear is under the weather. Poor Bear! :(How are you holding up? :bighug:Have you been able to get Bear to eat anything more lately?
Bear has been in a bounce for the last day or so. There is the insulin depot at work but I think his surplus glucose stores may be a little depleted from the bounce, the vomiting earlier and lack luster appetite. He's not eaten enough today to replenish his glucose stores so his numbers are staying down.

That makes sense, (bouncing has depleted his stored glucose).
I was getting an Alice in Wonderland kind of feeling.
At No shot +1.25 Bear ate a half an ounce of 5% & a half an ounce of 17%, which I honestly thought would shoot his BG up to yellow or pink because of his no shot.
 
Yes, you'd expect the 17% to elevate BG but he's got to replenish his stores and with the depot still at work and little food today, I'd think he's using what he's eaten for energy instead of shooting it out to his bloodstream. I'd keep offering him food. Bear has never had pancreatitis before has he?

I am doing ok.
I caught 3.5 hrs sleep and got up at 3:30 AM because Bear's last night PM cycle looked like a bounce clearing cycle and I wanted to check on him later in his cycle.
Then I went back to bed at 6:30AM because I knew DH would let me sleep in.
So I missed most of Bear's excessive vomiting and Jeff said he could hardly believe I didn't wake up when he vacuumed and steam cleaned the carpet in the livingroom and hall. :eek:

Poor little Bear is hiding in his carrier with only his rear end showing, hoping that I will leave his ears alone. :stop:

No, not documented but there has been one time that he went on a vomiting binge off and on for 3 days.
That was when we went to Petsmart and a Vet Tech recommended Hills Science Diet and after a few days of that mixed in his food he started staying out of sight, drinking water like he'd been in the desert, filling the litter box up and losing weight.

for Bear! You must be exhausted. I know only too well what those short naps and getting up to test kitty is like. Compound that with a sick kitty rather than just routine "keep them safe" testing and it's that much harder.
Poor Bear has had a hard day and probably just wants to sleep. If you can get him to eat a bit more, maybe you can give him a break for a bit.

Ah yes I remember the SD food situation and the vomiting. Unfortunately pancreatitis is common in diabetics but it can also be difficult to get a definitive answer as to whether that's the problem. All you can do is supportive care and take it a day at a time. Menace stopped eating on me once early in her diabetic days but no vomiting. Ended up at ER thinking we were going to have to install a feeding tube. Little monster started eating for them by the next morning and I never did figure out what the problem was. Hopefully Bear just a has a bug and will be right as rain in day or two.
 
Well I couldn't entice him out of his carrier with food which concerned me so I dragged him out and tested.
+4 64BG now he is eating a little more. :)
 
His BG is holding and it's encouraging that he is eating on his own. Fingers crossed he's on the mend.
I'm fading fast here so I'm gonna hit the sack. I hate to abandon you but I can hardly keep my eyes open now and my fingers are getting ahead of my brain typing :woot:. I'll be checking in on you both first thing in the morning. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Well I was cautious and conservative since I didn't know what or if there would be a difference using the R with Lantus vs Prozinc.
Bear's BG was staying pretty level until the last hour and 15 minutes. then he went up to 446.
 
Hugs for both you and scritches for Bear. What an ordeal. Pancreatitis is tough it makes them feel so bad.

I hope he continues to eat for you. That is quite the bounce. He will need to replenish his glucose store for sure now.

Sending vines for Bear to feel better soon.
