Yay! I was finally able to get enough blood to get a reading for Jack this morning, and it was 155. I don't have his insulin yet, but even if I did, this would have been too low to shoot him. At the vets, 9 days ago, his BG was well over 400. His fructosamine was over 700. Since the testing, I removed all dry and put him on Fancy Feast. Could this be the reason why his numbers are lower? I know he's not feeling great, as he's still peeing heavy and his neuropathy, in his back legs, is pretty bad. But I can clearly see that he's feeling so much better than he was last week. He's no longer playing in his water bowl, he's peeing half the amount he was before, he's greeting me every morning in the kitchen, he's cleaning himself again, and he just overall looks and acts more like Daddy Jack ❤.

He has dropped close to five pounds since October. (He's a big boy, at 17.5 lbs in Oct.) When he saw the vet in October, he also was not diabetic. They did both a BG reading and his fructosamine level. He was there because he was sick and we thought perhaps he had cancer. His stomach was bloated, his spleen was enlarged, and he was very constipated. He's no longer constipated and he's dropped so much weight since that time. I guess I'm a little confused about what's going on right now. I guess I'm wondering if he really has diabetes at all, or if there's something else happening here? His insulin should be here tonight, and I'll keep testing his BG. I just want my little guy to be okay.

That's great! A diet change can make a big difference, and it is enough for some cats. 155 is still a little bit high on a human meter but not terribly.

If you want advice on if/when to start any insulin, I suggest you start that discussion on the ProZinc forum.

That would be wonderful if he could have stabilized blood glucose. Not only did he eat only dry food, but now I realize it was a high-carb dry food. I thought I was giving him the best by sticking to a limited ingredient, grain-free dry food. But the first ingredient was peas, so not only was it high-carb but it was plant protein, which isn't great. So switching to a low carb canned food has been a big change for him. Once the insulin gets here, I'll hop over to the Prozac forum to see what I should do from there. I'm still so excited that I actually got blood from him today!

Hi Carolyn
Congratulations on getting your first test!
I am going to tag @Djamila as she can help you with Prozinc. I would also start posting over there now even if you haven’t started the insulin.
I don’t think you should give insulin with a Preshot lower than 200 in the beginning without asking for help from someone who uses Prozinc.
