Diagnosed late Jan, lurking here since

My Ani was diagnosed late January, and I was so thankful to find this amazingly useful site. Just...wish I had done so before the vet sold me a Alpha Trak 2 meter for much more than it retails. And Purina D/M dry kibble.

I think I was in shock and struggling with Ani's diagnosis, which is why I didn't look around before the "orientation" visit with the vet. Otherwise I would have been better informed, and less likely to just accept everything he said at face value.

So I have a meter that's prohibitively expensive to keep in test strips, a cheap Reli-on meter than seems to be decently accurate, and a cabinet full of FF low carb wet food. Progress, and lesson learned.

I just want to thank all the members of this site, who over the years have compiled so much useful advice, and who continue to help out those with newly diagnosed kitties.

Welcome Meiko and Ani. You are not the only person who could have been better informed and educated..but that's done now and you are definitely doing your best and making progress. You no longer have to lurk, come join us on our adventures and let us help where we can. You have done so well, you have made the diet changes, begun testing (which can be a huge hurdle for some of us), set up the signature and spreadsheet. And Ani is gorgeous! You can post observations and questions in the Main Health forum, or if you have other insulin questions/concerns in the Lantus forum. So glad you are here and have joined the community! :cat:

Welcome. Glad your not just lurking anymore. Alpha is a great meter. It's less expensive if you use freestyle insulinx strips with it.

Thank you! We appreciate the warm welcome, and all of the information available here. It will make our lives so much easier!

That's actually what made me stop lurking - I have the Alpha, and I've been using the Freestyle Lite test strips, but the numbers seem really high (even when I test with the control solution). So I bought a back-up meter, a Reli-on from Walmart, and splurged on some more Alpha test strips, and hope to figure things out. I may end up giving the Insulinx strips a try.

When I open a new vial of insulinx strips I compare a few tests to the alpha strips. The only time they were really of was a batch of very expired strips (a year expired).

Welcome Meiko and Ani. This is a great source for information. Many of us come here just like that, with little info and not sure what to do. Welcome to community!
