Carbon had a low scare then spiked yesterday. I hope he is stable and this isn't him on a downward spike again.

I leave tonight for five days and only one of my two sitters is ok testing blood. I'm working with the other.

He also has blood in his urine which is a known side effect of his meds and I'm just to keep an eye on him for now. It's bothering him. He pees by my bed when I wake up as a clear "hey, attention!" I'm double checking with his vet today to ensure he doesn't want me bringing him in before I leave.

His energy and behavior is great besides that!

Can you get a +1 test in this morning? Looks like he cleared that bounce already and reacting to the new dose. We want to make sure he stays in good numbers today (obviously) by checking his BG sooner than later so that we can intervene and slow him down if need be.

Wow, I'm glad you had me do that. He's at 54. Gave him some temptations. I've decided to take him to the weekend vet for the blood in his urine as well. Might just take the hit and see if they'll hold him a few days

Do you get that high carb food with gravy?
We need to slow him down NOW. I would give him a teaspoon of high carb food with a drop of honey or Karo You should test in a half an hour

Honestly, under the present circumstances, if he were my cat I would not give him insulin while I was gone.

You're just getting a sense of how responsive he is to insulin (very responsive apparently) and I believe it would not be safe for him unless there was someone who can test him before every shot and get a +1 or +2 every time AND has the knowledge, experience and availability to stay with him and steer him if needed.
It sounds trite but better high numbers for a few days than a life threatening hypo event of low numbers for even an hour

Ok, I see where you're going. I also think with the treatment of whatever was going on his body might be producing more insulin now too or less resistant to the insulin it's producing. We are at the vet now and they're looking at the blood in his urine and are testing his blood glucose while I wait but I did give him some gravy food with the karo.

The new roommate moves in this weekend I'm actually trying to find a second roommate so I can reduce the workload even more and my other roommate comes back until she moves out so I'll have good coverage after this week. I will absolutely insist that roommates learn to test. Their rent is damn near free for California.

Yes, I think you're on to something. He may be one of the kitties who's underlying health issues had him in higher numbers. His pancreas may be doing some healing as well and kicking in. He may not require much insulun at all and that's were it gets dicey if there aren't experienced people who can , test, monitor and intervene if needed while you are away at work.
If they're testing his BG now it's probably going to influenced from the gravy food & karo

I'm also considering boarding him. They're getting me a quote. They are an emergency vet so they might be expensive so I might just try and have one of the sitters take him to a boarding tomorrow with my regular vet.

Vet said probably stress induced cystitis, maybe uti but everything else looks great. I only have nine days home a month during training but next month it gets better so I may just have to board them till I'm done with training.

Oh that is good news IMHO -relatively speaking. I suppose they are culturing the urine to rule in/out UTI?

I may have to try that! I know my traveling is very stressful for them. I wish I had a more stable situation. They are doing a urinalysis and I am going to board him. Just the amount of weight that was lifted off my shoulders knowing he's in good hands for the next 5 days is worth the $2,000. And I just spent nearly 3,000 on his diagnosis so that would certainly go to waste if the next five days went poorly. And of course if I keep him alive for several more years and he's my friend for several more years I won't give a crap about that $2,000.

That's what credit is for.

I'm glad you can do that. It's seems better for everyone. CareCredit is great if you r vet takes it, most do. No interest for 6 months.
When you get back, maybe a restart/rethink on insulin dose and methods depending on your housemate sitch?

I'm glad the blood in urine wasn't kidney related. Since they are an emergency vet, will they be giving insulin and testing, I'm assuming so, but never been in that situation

yes, they're going to be doing at least two curves which will be the first time he's had curves professionally since being put on lantus. The first two days are considered medical and they will be running tests and getting him started on antibiotics. The last 3 days are considered just boarding so they'll give him his insulin but no treatment unless of course necessary.

they do normal care as well and I think I just found my new vet. They're much closer to my house and they really seemed to understand diabetes. I'm usually not a fan of VCA but these guys seem to be really good.

Sorry I haven't responded to your posts yesterday. I checked the board late last night ans was about to post back and was tagged for help. Stayed up till 2 am.
