Carbon AMPS "hi"

I'm new to this forum and it was suggested I start posting here this morning at 2 am when I was up with a low BG scare. I recently switched to Lantus, which I drive to Mexico to get :) (Happy to help others in Socal region with same). I am told I still paid the "gringo" price but it was considerably cheaper than in the states. I also fly to Canada from time to time so I can pick up there, too. (As the daughter of a Type II and roommate of a Type I, I could post alone on how I feel about how we take care of diabetics in the US).

Carbon was on Vetsulin and was getting very thin and sick. I could not get his BG under control. I took him to a new vet who kept him for three days, determined he was insulin resistant, had some abnormal liver results. He also appeared maybe constipated or something else with his intestines. He found he really only slightly responded to lantus. We put him on meds, the litter box knows if it was constipation it sure didn't stay that way, and I kept him on Vetsulin a few days until I could make it south. He showed immediate response even before the lantus on the various meds and then after lantus, he's been... getting more stable? We started at 2.5 IU (where we were with vetsulin) and I'm now at 1IU after last night's scare.

I've made a lot of mistakes in this process, and it's got an added tough bonus that I'm an airline pilot so I'm rarely home. My roommate doesn't like testing; however, she's moving out and today I'm meeting a potential new roommate who was a paramedic! She will pay super cheap rent in exchange for caring for him and she already shows promise regarding testing his BG and seeing his signs. Here's hoping the meet and greet goes well!

He started at 10 pounds, got to about 7, and back to 9 now. He should be about 12. He was never overweight. He eats Sheba now (I have four cats so they all get his diet, and two of them were kinda heavy, one flat out over weight, and all at fighting weight now! Hopefully I'm avoiding the same with any of them). Sometimes he gets fancy feast. They all get bored with any one food so I rotate. Sheba pate isn't talked about much but when it is, people say it's fine.

Last night he was under 50. I hadn't been home for two days so I don't know what his body was doing before that. I was misinformed and told to give a shot no matter what so I gave his evening shot plus some syrup (maple, switching to karo now), some temptations, plus his dinner. He ate well - he's a good eater generally - and I started testing every 20-30 minutes. It took til 2 AM to get him rising, but then he bounced up fast. It wasn't til I gave him honey instead of syrup that I saw any change. This morning he was "Hi" on the Relion Micro, but per you guys, I am keeping him at 1IU and letting the bounce settle. He was consistently low at 1.5 and at 1.25 so no reason to believe he won't come down fine.

Right now he's staring and whining at me, because I'm not petting his perfect but bruised little ears. (Don't worry, I pet between paragraphs and he'll get good snuggles when I post) He didn't eat a ton for breakfast, but ate one serving. He just asked for another and I gave him half. I'm reading the Lantus ISG doc - it's huge but oh my god, finally I feel like some science is being told! Both my vets so far were very hands off and not overly helpful. You all have been a miracle. I have no doubt that he wouldn't be here now with out you, given the rough last few months.

(Apologies for my SS. It shows my mistakes in glaring spotlight form. I am learning though. This little a-hole isn't going anywhere. (His middle name is that. He's the SMARTEST cat I've ever had and I've had a ton. He used to parkour my kitchen to get to a top cabinet to get his treats out. He can open windows, doors, and pop out screens to escape. If he saw ANY movement when you opened the front door, no matter how way ahead of him you were, he'd be out the front door chasing whatever it was - neighbors, their cats, a kid in a wagon, HUGE dogs (once terrified a pitty). In his elderly years, he has calmed WAY down, especially after I had him on prozac for about 6 months. Once took him to a vet who saw the A word on his file and frowned disapprovingly at me. Then she treated him. He stole cat treats in the back room and she didn't even see it til he was chowing down. He had a catheter for a bladder block and he got out of it three times - the third after he was in a tiny immobilizing box with a collar of shame and everything, they have NO idea how he did it. She brought him back out to me when I picked him up and said, "you sure named him well." I know. Boy do I, but it's ALL love.))

Also, his name, I promised that story. But it's long as relates to the other three cats, so I'll do that later.

Just want to add, sometimes I get negative feedback because of my career and four cats. They are all around 14 years old and 14 years ago I had no idea this would be my life. I was in a stable relationship with a man I thought was wonderful, I was working on a masters and home every night. I was a flight instructor but 9/11 had dashed my hopes of making it a career. Cue to four years ago, I had returned to flying but my ex took great care of the cats. Came home early, found what you know I found, and moved out taking one cat because I had to move into a 200 sq ft apartment. His new woman wanted the cats gone and I was so happy to get all four but I've had to make some decisions (like turning down a job in Hawaii) to make sure they were as loved and well taken care of as possible. And here I am, with my four besties and a rotation of roommates and friends that help.

You’re in the right place! I don’t have any advice as I’m a newbie myself but yikes! I’m glad you’re not shooting no matter what anymore and you’re here now :)

Lots of amazing people here with so much knowledge who volunteer their time lovingly and willingly to help all our kitties. It’s also great that you have such great support from friends and roommates to care for Carbon :)

Good morning! No judgement here. It's quite harrowing the amount of stuff people on the board are dealing with in their lives besides FD. We try to help and support each other as best we can. Obviously you love your kitties and have a commitment to them :cat:
Looks like Carbon is having a big old bounce from going low and staying low for so long. I bet he feels pretty weird too, with that BG swing.
I'm reading the Lantus ISG doc - it's huge but oh my god, finally I feel like some science is being told!
I'm sure you'll have questions, don't hesitate to throw them out there when you do.

Good luck today with your potential new housemate.! Also, just wondering what kind of schedule you are on and is it pretty regular. So like 4 days away, 3 back or something? Want to help you figure out testing and dosing options to keep Carbon safe while you are working. It can be done esp. if you have another person there, but may need to get a bit creative...

Heading out for a walk in the snow. My 1 year old puppy is getting cabin fever. It should be pretty novel. The streets are empty of cars as the snow is so deep (for Seattle) and people are staying put. I live near a major arterial and it's eerily quiet. I LOVE it
Will check back in later :)

Hi. Glad to see you made it over to the Lantus forum here is your thread from the main forum

Looks like a big bounce for Carbon which is not surprising after the lows last night.
Keep testing when you can, to see when he comes off the bounce.
If you are unsure if you should shoot, stall, don't feed and post and ask for help.
Read through the yellow stickies at the top of the page and see if the SLGS protocol would suit you. I think the tight regulation might be too hard at the moment given your circumstances with travelling and not having anyone who can test when you are not there and the SLGS would suit you better.
Make sure you have a supply of higher carb food and honey or Karo in the cupboard for when you have low numbers. Mark them as higher carb so you or your friend doesn't feed them as regular food..
Write any remarks about the food or Carbon in the remarks column of the SS so we can see it and it is also good info for you later to look back on. Try and always test before every shot.
I hope your new potential roommate works out.
Please ask lots of questions as we are very happy to help you. We are a community here and we look after each other.

Oh, so he probably really is hanging upsidedown in his photo

Story behind that. Carbon never wakes me up to feed him. However, he does wait for the first hint of wakefulness to remind me he is starving to death.

I had a bed with a shelf above it. For books, lamps, etc. I woke up one day and this is exactly what I saw. He sat still long enough for the photo. This is me looking up from my pillow to him sweetly awaiting that first sign that I'm awake. Just staring down at me, quietly.

He was at 575 at dinner, but still just gave him the 1 IU. I'll test him again tomorrow. The new roomie is a former paramedic and didn't seem to flinch at all at the idea of testing and shots. I think she'll be a huge help! I'm rebuilding my emergency kit and reading the homework. He's doing well today. He was not top game this morning, but this evening he has some energy back.

For Barbara & Uncle: Right now my schedule is varied, I'm junior and in training so I have no control. I should be able to get 4 and 3 or so in a 5-6 months but it's chaos right now. I leave for 5 days tomorrow and he won't be tested most of the days but I do have someone coming to test him on two of them. If he's all over, I will see if she can come more. It's quite a drive for her. The other person sitting her is a former vet tech, but I didn't have time to teach her how to test. Might be easy - she might know.

I'm kind of jealous I'm missing the snow, but also happy to be in a warm training room through the worst of it :) It's cold in Palm Springs. Low of 40 tonight which is actually bitter around these parts.

As for his name, as promised, he's named Carbon because he's white. :) But of course!

The ex and I went to the shelter to get a cat. He liked a black one and I liked a long hair tortie. The shelter let us see each one individually and we couldn't decide. We loved them both. So the shelter put them both in with us (claiming they technically weren't allowed to do that, don't know if that's true) and the two just immediately curled up together. So we had two cats. (The two of them in "Katy Perry's dog bed" (I flew her and her dog slept in that bed. I got to keep it after the flight so now it's famous :) https://photos.app.goo.gl/nWR4YtVfqtGdsJBN8 )). The black one is one of the dumbest cats I've ever had - also the biggest heart. I say that with nothing but love. And he's a lover. So we named him Einstein. He's all heart, no brain :) The tortie was "Weekah" which is Dakota Sioux for 'magic one with painted face' (aka raccoon) (her face: https://photos.app.goo.gl/qqSKuK3kegn9o5RQA ). However, back in the days of the Kitten Battle site, we saw a cat named Pickles and thought that name was hilarious. So she is called pickles.

There was a show called Greg the Bunny around when we got them. In it, Greg the Bunny auditions with this song:
I sang that song to Einstein regularly, and because he is black, his middle name became Snowball. Einstein you are my best friend, Einstein your love never ends, Einstein I'm in love with you. Einstein you complete me. Einstein Einstein Einstein. (Now I am convinced that when he roams the house at 2 am singing, he is just saying his name over and over. "Einstein. EINstein. EinSTEIN. EinSTein"

Cut to about a year later, I came home from work and this white thing streaked by me into my home when I opened the door. He was sick and obviously feral (and all attempts to find his home failed). He was over a year old, and not fixed. We took him in to see a vet immediately and the vet said you could fit my fist into the abscess in his leg and he probably had less than a day to live had we not brought him in. IV antibiotics and several hundred dollars into who would someday become my $20K cat, and he was at our home - parkouring. So he's all white and in the vein of Einstein's ironic names, he was named Carbon. Carbon A-hole. https://photos.app.goo.gl/vTiqinL9xdJ8mreA8

Cut to about a year later. We are watching tv and notice that all three cats are laying by the front window. They don't usually hang together. We look closer and on the other side is the tiniest kitten, curled against the window on the opposing side. Were they trying to warm her? We can't catch her but she's back the next night. So I lock the three up in another room and we open the window (screenless - thanks Carbon) and hide on our side. Put some treats just on the inside. She eventually came in and we closed the window and she tore off terrified. She's never stopped being a scared cat. She was too young to be fully weaned but we couldn't find her mother. Our neighbors were catch and release spayers and thought they'd seen others from the litter, but no mom. They knew all the neighborhood cats. When we took her to the vet, she wouldn't stop purring (a fear purr of course) so he ran water so he could get her to stop and listen to her heart. We named her Olympia after the purring engines on the Concorde jet. Ollie for short. She's my baby. Never leaves my side - though her stress has skyrocketed with carbon's illness. No more freefeeding, and he gets so much special treatment, she is really struggling. That's my next issue to face. https://photos.app.goo.gl/NMB9YMiLCfZDEQNy9

Those are my four kiddos. Einstein Snowball, Weekah Pickles, Carbon A-hole, and Olympia Babykittyface. All around 13-14 now, still healthy over all, still my besties.

AND scene.

Welcome! Looks like you've got a huge heart! So glad to see you're joining the very best forum on the web for helping you with Carbon. There is so much to learn here - and it's overwhelming at first.

I have to say although vets are great for many life-saving illnesses, etc. with cats their knowledge of diabetic cats pales in comparison to that of this group. They really just don't know. It's hard to wrap your head around that initially - as we all want to respect and appreciate them for their expertise and education - however - their education is extremely limited when it comes to the specifics of Feline Diabetes.... so with that in mind - get ready to read, learn, read and learn some more.

Sounds like you've got a busy schedule too! But whenever you can - whether you're able to post or not - stop by the forum and read the other condos - study their spreadsheets - just to see how things are going with all the other kittiehs here. There's a slang dictionary so you'll know what the heck everyone is talking about when we talk about the lagoons and the sharks :) It's all in fun - but there's also serious commentary buried in there as well...we're struggling too...remission isn't always an easy thing to achieve. And even when achieved not always held on to...once a diabetic, always a diabetic. But that glimmer of hope is always there and these cats are full of surprises!

So - hopefully next time you post on the board here - you could write your title like so: Date / Cat Name / AMPS (that's the morning pre-shot number). Be sure to copy/paste your last post url at the top - so - people who are reading will know what was said the last time. Your signature is excellent btw!

Lots of people will join in and give you various amounts of advice; my favorite is for testing; I use a rice filled baby sock that I warm in the microwave for a few seconds to place under Luci's ear. Helps me to warm her ear, support it and not stab my finger. The next is marking on the bottom of all her canned Fancy Feast pate - the carb counts. I use Dr. Pierson's sortable list - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...m6PPfEUz9YmzMGMxkmcBk6uRR0/edit#gid=113878384 ..excellent reference. And I pick up tips here for no-carb treats and foods. An auto feeder has been a godsend - but we're a one-cat household - you may need to inquire about member's feeders with chips - for multi-cat households.

Once again - welcome to the forum - hope to see you posting again soon - and hopefully with better numbers. That high was most likely due to the sweet stuff you fed - hopefully you'll have a chance to pick up some medium and high carb Fancy Feast or other wet canned food to help with that - always good to have on hand for those occasions when the numbers are slipping.

Like others have already said, no question is a bad question - that's how we all learn...keep 'em coming. However only one thread per day - otherwise it's confusing...Just modify your title if you need to - have a wonderful day and give all those kittiehs scritches from us :)
