Hi, I'm writing for my neighbours Ann and her cat Ginge as she isn't good with forums. It was suggested Ipost here from Tanya's CKD forum. Ginge is 16 years, tubby with diabetes and now seems to have CKD too. He crashed on Friday and was at the vets having fluids over the weekend. His phosphorus is only slightly above normal but his diabetes is quite high but well managed. The vet needs him to lose weight but he has always been a grazer on kibble, so she is suggesting Hill's W/D (We are in the UK). The general advice from fellow friends seems to be to tackle the diabetes which is understandable and then use a phosphorus binder. The phosphorus on the dry diabetic foods here seems to be very high though - about 1.6% rather than 0.4% for CKD. Some of the obesity food is quite high in carbs and about 0.8% phos. My understanding, apart from kibble is bad, is that he needs to get onto two meals/day with his insulin and diabets food that is low in phosphorus. Is there such a thing as low carb and low phos in UK kibble food?! Any advice would be really good, thank you! Naomi :)

Actually it seems his blood glucose needs better control. That's almost impossible on a dry food diet. The absolute best thing is to make the switch to a canned low carb wet food diet. https://catinfo.org/docs/TipsForTransitioning1-14-11.pdf I can just about guarantee that this will go a very long way to get the excess weight off AND get BG under better control. As for two meals a day, not so. Most of us feed multiple small meals a day. Take to total daily ration that's appropriate for the kitty and divide it up.
@Elizabeth and Bertie can advise on food in the UK.

What insulin is the kitty on?
