Wanted to thank all the kitty parents for sharing your diabetic journey through this forum. Veterinarians have limited information and each experience is different....I will stress that NO KIBBLE is the common thread in managing feline diabetes.....and I would not have known that without this forum.
Ralph has been in remission for about a month. I will stress each case is different and you have to use the wealth of information provided on this forum and make it work for your kitty!
Here is what worked for my Ralph: I was able to catch the diabetes early, only have one cat. I was able to get his levels regulated within 3 months of the onset. I had to test his glucose regularly and find an insulin that worked for him. Lantus ended up working at controlling his levels. And the biggest change I learned from this forum, NO KIBBLE!!! I had to let go of believing "prescription diabetic" food was necessary. I found that wet foods with high contents of protein from grains like corn etc were no good for him. Ralphs diet is now 90% wet food with animal protein as the first ingredient and limited fillers. I found a dry kibble that is low in grains and I am able to give him a table spoon and a half of kibble in the evening....(after his glucose was regulated) I have not given insulin since mid december and his levels are holding steady, I have stopped checking his levels daily and now, every so often.
Ralph is like a kitten again(he is 10). So much so he has, once again, begun singing the song of his people in the middle of the night(yay).
Thank you all and God bless
Ralph and Jen
