Good morning!
AMPS 95 shooting 2.5F

Boomer ate most of his overnight foods, calling me at 4:00 to stir his remaining food then leaving about 1/3 of one serving.

I'm trying my best to embrace this cold snowy winter; usually I stay inside and get depressed that I can't do any photography. So since it was sunny out yesterday I did get out for a walk and visited 3 of my nearby favourite spots. But not much was happening at the first two; the Mergansers were the only ducks on the river and no, I did not see the one with the lure through its beak. I did see another one that had something attached to him...looked like something plastic...but it didn't look life-threatening so I didn't report it to the animal rehab (and I figured I'd get the same response anyways). At my third location there was lots of activity around some bird feeders; cardinals, doves, juncos, sparrows and chickadees. I did manage a couple of shots but that's it.

Today it's cloudy and we had about 6 inches of snow overnight:p and it's very cold still. I have some errands to run this afternoon but that's it.

Hi Judy and sending vines and :bighug::bighug:.

OT: Was so cold here earlier this week that the river and air made lots of sea mist (or sea smoke or air inversion depending on who’s describing it in locally, lol). A very rare phenomenon in these parts.

Here’s a photo Steve took of it from our upstairs window, though the photo a bit out of focus or very Monet-esque. The water was choppy too and contributed to the mist rising and roiling so much so that latimer light, in the background of little Quick Island, appears to be suspended above the horizon.

Great start Boomer! I'm over winter already. It's great to know January is almost over at least. I just hope beyond hope that we don't have a super long winter like we did last year. We've already been getting more snow this year than we have the last few years. More snow coming at one time. Usually all that missed us and pounded someone else. No such luck this year. Ugh. Sometimes I wonder why I live here, haha.

Last week one morning we had what is known as "sundogs" when the sun reflecting on ice crystals causes flares or rainbows. I had never seen them before and unfortunately could not get a shot of them.

I saw one for the first time yesterday afternoon! Well Caleb saw it first. I've seen plenty of pictures of them of course, but I don't think I've ever seen one in person. They're beautiful!

It could have been a band. Mergansers, like Loons, are divers and use their legs to propel themselves under water. The plastic loon bands I have seen attach to the leg and look almost like a little streamer. Each band is a unique color scheme so that the wildlife researchers can identify the loon from a distance and not disturb it. You can see a picture of a banded loon on the Adirondack Loon Conservation website: https://www.adkloon.org/

Good start, Deputy Boomer! Surf safe.

How long do cars last up there with all the salt eating away at them for 4 months?
Frequent trips to the car wash helps tremendously! DH has a truck that's 9 years old...no rust yet. I also understand more of the body of the car is made of metal that isn't as susceptible to road salt than they used to be...plus some states use magnesium chloride on the roads...not salt...so it varies...I hardly ever see a rusted out car anymore in Michigan - in the 70's they were all over the place...

Boomer's Bg looks great today! :D

The BIG Hawk was back in my yard today. He's killed 2 squirrels so far. It makes me mad,he only eats the brains from what I can tell. The body is left intact on the ground!:(

I went outside & yelled & clapped my hands but he was up in the tree & just sat there looking at me  I'm worried he'll be back all year to the fast food diner I've created by mistake!:banghead:

Now I'm afraid to feed the birds & squirrels! Bummer!

Oh I hated when the Coopers Hawk was hanging around; I felt like I was setting up his buffet by feeding the birds. I was happy when he left.

Nice cycle for Boomer! And, for once, he picked a cloudy day where you didn't miss out on anything by staying home with him. Even though it's been pretty cold here the last few days, I have been walking the pups every day. The forecast looks awful for next week and there will be a few days where you won't want to be outside for more than a few minutes. I am hopeful though that the record-breaking cold will mean school cancellations.;)

Speaking of ducks...
I hope this gives you a laugh while you stay up with Boomer View attachment 42142 View attachment 42143
Apparently my neighbor's duck wanted to do a walk-about or fly-about in this case and literally landed on my roof. I think it spent the night there!
For the last two summers we've had a pair of Mallards visit our backyard occasionally. They go swimming in our wee pond. And I've seen them land on the roof!
