I'm at my wit's end with my cat. She is approximately 7-8 years old, diabetic for a little over 2.5 years. On 2 units of Prozinc twice daily. Her eating habits make me want to rip my hair out!

I have fed/TRIED to feed countless types, brands, textures, and flavors of wet food to this cat and I'm about ready to just give up. I began with the healthiest diabetic-friendly food I could find and have ended somewhere at the end of the spectrum buying any old food that she will at least have a few licks at before turning up her nose. It doesn't matter how healthy or unhealthy it is, she hates it at least 9 times out of 10.

She hates pate, flaked, chunks, shreds, minced, morsels, and anything that isn't small bits of meat in gravy. And then she only wants to lick the gravy and leaves 90% of the meat behind. If the meat chunks are "too big" for her liking then she won't even attempt to eat them. I've tried chopping the bits even smaller and she still ignores them most of the time. I'm about ready to take all of the food I have for her and throw it in a blender to make it all a liquid texture and see if she'll eat that.

She was eating Purina One True Instinct wet food for quite a long time, at least a year or more. I was so relieved. It wasn't the greatest choice for her but I was just so excited to see that she was eating one kind of food and sticking with it for a long time! Back in December I went to the store to buy some more and what do I find? Purina put a new look on the box. Okay, that's cool, I say. Didn't even think to read the box because it didn't say "new look, new formula" or anything of the sort. Well, turns out they changed the recipe and ruined my peaceful life without having to worry about whether or not my cat would eat that morning.

So here we are now. I don't have any of her previous food left over to mix in to any new food I try to get her to eat, so each new food risks upsetting her stomach. She has enjoyed a can or two of certain brands, but as soon as I buy more of the kind she just ate and enjoyed, she stops eating it and I've suddenly wasted at least $20 each time. I now own an arsenal of cat food that I'm slowly but surely feeding to a nice little stray that visits a few nights a week while my own cat tries to starve herself out for no reason!

She is allowed dry food to snack on because if she doesn't have that then she will choose to actually starve herself to death than to sample any of the delicious wet food I try to give her. I believe the dry food is keeping her numbers in normal range because otherwise she'd just stop eating entirely save for a few licks of gravy here and there. I know dry food isn't a great option but I'd rather her eat something rather than nothing and risk missing her insulin shots, and her levels fluctuating abnormally.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated for the pickiest cat in the world who cannot afford to be picky thanks to relying on insulin!

It's not that she's addicted to dry food, as she really does enjoy wet food. I just can't find one that she likes long enough for her to keep eating it like the True Instinct she was eating :( I give her dry food in the meantime because I know she will eat it. Not because she's in love with it but because she needs to eat something and she will reliably eat dry food rather than nothing. I hate giving her dry food but at this point until I have a solution I feel like she needs it.

Have you tried topping wet food with various things:
  • Fortiflora
  • parmesan cheese
  • dried oregano (yes - some cats like it)
  • powdered freeze dried meat treats
  • etc.
Let's see what others have to say.

I'm no expert about anything but...

You could try grinding up some of the kibble she'll eat and sprinkle that on top of the wet food. Not ground to a powder, more like peppercorn size.

Also, not all flaked is the same. My picky cats will usually slurp around the little chunks in Fancy Feast Flaked Tuna or Trout, but they'll plow right through Flaked Chicken & Tuna or Tuna & Mackerel.

Yes, I hate the way they can (I think deliberately) fool you into thinking you found a food they like, and then turn their little noses up at it once you go out and invest in multiple cans.

I'm pretty sure that's Rule #1 in the Official Kitteh Playbook

Have you checked her teeth lately? My cat Chloe is also doing the same thing. I found out she needs a dental and has an infection. She is on antibiotics and will have her dental next payday. Until then I am pureeing her food so she will eat.

Topping her food with anything doesn't work, sadly! It's like she knows I'm trying to trick her into eating the wet food. And she actually used to like flaked food but unfortunately something about it makes her sick. She will eat it but no more than a day or so later she's puking it all up. Different brands of flaked food have all caused vomiting, even with proper transitioning from previous food.

Yes, they totally know they have you fooled and laugh at you when you buy more of a certain food they pretended to like! Furry little jerks.

As for her teeth, she just had them checked/cleaned back in September and she had a few removed. An upper canine tooth fell out (it was loose and was set to be pulled anyway but kitty was nice to me and saved me some money by losing it herself), a lower molar and a premolar were removed, and another lower premolar was already missing so they cleaned out the socket. I asked if there were any other teeth I needed to keep an eye on and the vet assured me that the rest of her teeth look great and shouldn't be a bother for quite a while. I took her home that day and after her anesthesia wore off, she wolfed down all the wet food I put in front of her since her teeth were causing her a bit of pain before removal. But that was during the time the True Instinct food was unchanged :(

The only real remaining solution I see is to blend her food into a mostly-liquid substance and hope for the best! Thank you all for giving me suggestions!

Blending it into a soup is not a terrible idea. Tiki cat has a line called velvet mousse who’s is basically that.... super smoothly blended. You could add a bit of water to it and try it. I feel your pain. I have an underweight cat, Julie, who has never eaten more than an ounce at a meal. She’s the tiniest thing and at her last trip to the vet weighed under 5 lbs. nothing wrong with her.... just doesn’t eat much. Very frustrating I know. Julie tends to prefer things with creamy sauces like ff flakes tuna, and the creamy delights or cheddar delights. She will also eat a bit of ff classic if I top it with pure bites, fortiflora or bonito flakes. She’s a pain in the ass. Lol
