I was worried he was not going down.. now it's worst, he keeps going down suddenly.

I increased the dose from 2 to 2.5 on the 12th; following day he had very big numbers (BLACK and RED with one YELLOW), probably NDW!

Unfortunately the following day, I did one fur shot and the day after, another one :banghead: (I had new longer syringes!) Because of those 2 fur shots, I didn't do "before bed" testing; I feel so bad! :banghead::banghead::banghead:

And today, only YELLOW; he even skipped the PINK!

What's happening? THANKS

Nice to see that day of sunshine on Ti-Mousse’s spreadsheet. Looks like he is finally working the juice. :) The next increase would be by 0.25 units, but not yet.

Hard to say if yellows are new for Ti-Mousse. You have no data after +3 at night, and many cats go lower at night,

Did you talk to the vet about a dental yet? They might be more willing with nicer numbers in the picture.

Can't believe he would finally be working the juice !!!! I'll remember not more than 0.25 unit and I'll ask about the timing.
For the +3 testing, I'll do one tonight for sure. I have a lot of trouble staying awake for +2 but I guess it's going to be part of our new routine :coffee: specially if numbers are going down:)
As for the dental, my vet was on vacation, then at a conference and today in surgery! I left her a message, she should call me back tonight; I want this to be done and as you say, with those new numbers she might be more comfortable, otherwise I'll find a dentist.

When I started I did the shot in the scruff & did a fur shot. The next shot i did in his side towards the rear leg. Ravan has Black fur so if I spread his fur I can see the white skin. I shoot at an angle & have never done another fur shot ( 11 months ) . I use a 5/16" needle.

Those yellow #'s look great to me! You don't want the High red & Black BG. Don't forget the goal is to eventually see blue & green :D
Getting up at night to test becomes a part of the routine.The spreadsheet is kinda like a puzzle. You want to try to fill in the boxes, little by little. to see what the insulin is doing at different times Day & night.

It might be helpful to look at other Spreadsheets just to see how often we test & the Bg at daytime & night time.

Good Luck with Ti-Mouse Looks like he's responding to the insulin :)
 
I know it really depends on your schedule, but the best thing I did was switch the shot times from 9:30-10:00am/pm to 6:30am/pm. I thought the later times would be better because then I could go out at night and be home by ten or so. But I really struggled getting night time tests.

I brought my shot times up (by 15 minutes per cycle) to 6:30am/pm., and it's worked out so much better for me. I can easily get a +4 before bed, or stay up a little longer if need be. And if I need to go out at night, I can leave any time after 6:15pm.
 
Thank goodness for finally seeing a response to the insulin! Those are nice numbers - hope he'll work this dose for you and show you some more good numbers - no more of those blacks and reds now Ti-Mouse! :bighug:

Thank you so much, I'll try your way for shooting - the new needles are 5/16" also! He growls very often when getting insulin; some people were saying it's because insulin was cold, so I kept the vial I'm using at room temperature even if I have to through it away after 30 days, no change he keeps growling sometimes! I'm trying everything to help him :)

I like doing puzzle, so I'll try to see it that way.. the problem is that he had frozen ears so badly when I got him, that the edge of one was hard and all curled up and the other one had pieces missing, so not much place to test :( I was looking at other spreadsheets and I was really feeling bad about not testing as much as I would like!

That's a good idea, I'll try to change the schedule, I'll go as you said (15 minutes per cycle); it will surely help for nigh testings! :)

You might try putting his favorite treat in front of him to distract him while you're shooting. I do that with Luci - she was a flincher...she'd flinch and I'd miss...not a good thing...so DH would hold her...after a while I figured why not put a little snack out there - sure enough she's on that snack - it's usually one tiny piece of dried salmon or chicken - she loves that stuff! And while her face is down on that snack, mom sneaks up from behind grabbing a handful of scruf and bingo - the shot is in. It'll get quicker over time - Luci barely knows what's happened...and she's munching when I'm walking away - all done :)

I don't think that's true. Most of us keep the insulin in the fridge.I've even read that keeping the needles cold hurts less.( I don't do that ) When I started I used Lantus insulin (most of the people here seem to like Lantus.)
My Ravan is a bouncer! He recently went from 418 pmps to 91, 8 hrs later! He's also dropped to the 40's unexpectedly. He was on Lantus for nearly 6 months the last few months he started twitching when I gave his shot. Sometimes he'd kinda move away like it hurt him.

I started reading everything i could find about Lantus Insulin & discovered that it's acidic & for some cats it stings. Levemir Insulin is Neutral PH & does not sting. Some people here told me Levemir might help with Ravan's bouncing So I switched to Levemir. He no longer twitches or shows any reaction
when I inject the Levemir & I use about a third less Insulin than when i used Lantus. He still bounces but it's improved a bit.

If I were you I'd keep the insulin in the fridge. It recommends you do, once you start using it. I use it to the last drop. (so do most of the people I've talked to)

Sunshine didn't last long; he went from +6 229 to PMPS 722; never been that HIGH :nailbiting:

His little body is freaking out from that low number - low for him was that yellow - he's not used to low numbers. It takes time for them to realize it's okay to have a different number. Hang in there...and get ready for the roller coaster ride. :bighug:

My new vials are always kept in the fridge; the one I'm using now was for testing at room temperature and I knew I would have to through it out after 30 days; it didn't solve my problem, shots always seem to hurt him. I thought of Lantus stinging problem when he was growling getting his insulin but people were saying that stinging would only happen with large doses. I'm wondering..?? He twitches too. I was thinking of switching to Levemir as I was not getting any results with Lantus but today I was so happy finally he's getting on the train but he's already off ; PMPS 722.

Today, he had the lowest and the highest since the beginning...:(

So nice! I was so worried; today he went from the lowest ever 229 to the highest ever 722. With so many wonderful people like you being there I'm ready for the roller coaster ride:) We'll get there!
 
We have had other members whose kitties reacting to the Lantus sting at small doses and switched to Lev as a result. If you want to try the warmer insulin theory, instead of keeping the vial out of the fridge, hold the syringe and insulin between your fingers for a few moments before injecting, to warm it up.

Yuck on the PMPS! Just think of it as as result of the insulin finally starting to do it’s work and get the blood sugar numbers lower, bounces are to be expected.

You're using an alpha trac meter. I'm not familiar with the readings on those. I couldn't afford the strips. I use a very inexpensive Relion meter The strips costs $18 for 100 !

You have one of the experts here for the Best advice. Wendy&Neko she has a LOT of Experience (2012) A lot of people have opinions & advice but they need the Experience. If you have important questions tag Wendy & listen to what she tells you.

I'll check back to see how you're doing :) My best advice is what I've been told so many times. "Patience" is needed! (the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.) I'm still working on that!!:rolleyes:

Does he growl when you insert the syringe or when you inject the insulin? Hogan also fought me on the injections, but he's better now. For him, it was as soon as I inserted the syringe, so I think it was a technique issue. If he's growling only once you inject the insulin, then likely it's a reaction to the insulin itself.

There's also something called hyperesthesia. The symptoms are rippling of the fur, sudden kicking of the paws, scratching themselves, appearing as if they have been bitten by something. I equate it to a histamine attack in people. Hogan has always had this to a mild degree. Sometimes I would gently pet him and his whole back would start rippling and he would get irritated. I've read that Lantus (and probably any injection) can trigger this and/or make this worse.
 
When surprised or frustrated, I've taken to singing this old Chumbawumba song from the nineties (really dating myself here) call Tubthumping. I think of it as my little ode to feline diabetes. "I get knocked down but I get up again". It's my musical version of "be the tank".

Particularly the "pissing the night away" part. After my 8th consecutive test at 3:30 in the morning, I definitely feel like I've pissed the night away

Yes Yuck... I'm still awake and waiting to do his +3 testing. Not sleepy at all this time, just waiting for the results.
For the insulin, right now I'm using a vial at room temperature; I know I'm about to discard it, as at room temperature it's good for 30 days only, but I wanted to see if it would solve the shooting problem; it did not. So I'll be using the next vial from the fridge and try to warm it up as you suggest.
BTW vet did not call back.. I'm kind of MAD very MAD; I was so worried today and all of you helped me out and made everything easy and OK; I felt surrounded! My vet I'm paying big $$$ did not even return my call. I know excuses will come .... :arghh:

BTW I use the AlphaTrak meter because me vet sold it to me; I'm using the Free Light strips which are a little less expensive than the AlphaTrak ones but too expensive for me. I would have liked to get the Relion Walmart meter but it's discontinued. I'm looking for another one with 0.3 blood sample size and affordable strips.

He growls before I insert the syringe most of the time, just like if he knew some bad was coming up! Hyperesthesia, that's interesting; I'll search on that. Thanks.

Vet didn't call back tonight... I'm not too happy, I would say "kind of MAD"!!! You pay them full of $$$ and when you need them, not there! I'll see tomorrow!! Thanks for the good words!:)

That's kind of when I think about going vet shopping... hahaha!

Things happen and human error occurs but after starting work at my vet hospital, I see how some DVMs stay 2-3 hours after their last appointment/shift end just to write notes and call clients. I had a night shift that started at 8 pm and the DVM was still there until 10 doing things. So there are vets out there who will take lots of time to help.

You're right for that; it's just that it's not the first time she doesn't return the call .. and they are the only clinic around and she is the owner! It all depends who you deal with, some are great and some are so-so... I have my Pepe, another of my kitty, who has been seeing an ophtalmologist for possible cancer of the eye; I'm sending picture of his eye every 2 months and the ophtalmo looks at them (without charging) until the mid-year appointment, unless he sees something! It always depends who you deal with and finding the right one for you!

This meter is the same as the Wal-Mart Relion Confirm or micro.

They also have the Nova Max which uses same size blood drop. But I find it doesn't zip the blood fast, Olive is a fidgety girl and we do waste nova max strips. So once used will be going back to the other ones.

I looked at the Nova Max and here they sell the strips $80. + tax for 100, which is what I pay for the Free Style Lite strips I'm using with the AlphaTrak2. I'll see if the Arkray is available in Canada and the cost of strips. Tks.
