Hi, everyone,
My sweet kitty, Dusty, was at the vet yesterday for a checkup, and we did complete blood work. He has IBD, CKD, and had high blood sugar in the past (tested high at the vet in September 2017) and the vet (different from the one I have now) said he was pre-diabetic. His blood sugar has tested normal at the vet since then (until yesterday), and he's never been on insulin.
His blood sugar yesterday at the vet was 257, and though the vet said she's not overly concerned since it still falls in the range of stress-induced high blood sugar, she's very thorough and suggested I go get some Keto Diastix and check for sugar in his urine. Unfortunately, the pharmacy only had the stix that measure ketones, so I went ahead and purchased a glucometer (the Walgreens True Metrix). After about 7 attempts, I was finally able to get a blood sample and reading, and it was 57. This was at 9:20 p.m. His was fed today at roughy 9 a.m., 3:30 p.m., and most recently at 7 p.m. (he finished that meal at around 8 p.m.).
I'd love to get the opinion of people here since I know there are such knowledgable people on this forum. Given tonight's reading, does it sound like the reading at the vet was purely due to stress? Also, his fructosamine yesterday was normal at 219 (I like to get that tested when we go bc of his history of high blood sugar).
P.S. We're going back in 3 weeks to recheck blood work (one of his liver enzymes was elevated and she wants to be sure it doesn't continue to go up). She's also starting him on a liver support supplement that I'll pick up tomorrow. When we go back we'll try to get a urine sample.
Thank you, everyone!
Leni
