01/04 - Ti-Mousse - AMPS:481 - +7: 441 - PMPS:452 - +3: 439 Increasing tomorrow!

Come on down, handsome kitty Ti-Mousse. :cat:
That's cool that he played last night.
My kitty never seemed to even feel the shots. Are you tenting the skin and shooting into the tent? The only time my kitty acted like it hurt was when I rarely accidently shot into the muscle instead of under the skin.

Ti-Mousse's body is big and bulky, so when you raise the skin it doesn't go up much to form a nice tent. I might try to shoot in a different spot, mayby scruff - he seems to have a little more loose in there! Also his skin is very hard, you really have to push for the needle to go through! I'm using a 31 gauge needle. I don't know if a longer needle would help, right now I'm using a 1/4", maybe I should try a 5/16"!

Ti-Mousse is such a nice kitty, he used to follow me everywhere in the house, people were calling him "my dog"; now when he sees me coming he hides :( Poor thing, he was growling a few times getting his insulin that's why I want to find what's wrong. Thk you for helping!

Was he growling because of the restraint maybe, and not the feel of the shot? A lot of people shoot when the cat is eating their food (otherwise occupied).
I used the 1/2 inch needles because J.D. was a big boy and extra "fluffy". I shot in the scruff for years, until he developed scar tissue there and it became harder to get through the skin in the scruff. After that I moved the shots to his sides.

Come on down Ti-Mousse! If you don't see anything below 300 before tomorrow, you can increase to 2.0 units. Please try to get a test in tonight before bed. We want to make sure he's not going lower at night and bouncing during the day.

Here is a post on Testing and Shooting Tips. Maybe something there to help you? I used the BD Ultrafine II syringe, 8mm needle. Some kitties seem to notice a sting with Lantus because of it's acid base. My Neko didn't notice it until she got onto quite a bit larger dose than Ti-Mousse is on. Moving to Levemir helped with that.

I put him on the kitchen island, talk to him, pet him; he doesn't move, just wait for me to put him back on the floor when I'm done. Is he ever nice!!! I'll try the scruff and a longer needle, it'll probable help!

"Come on down" that's what I tell him everyday!!! I doubt he will go below 300, it never happened yet; so if he is not below, I'll increase to 2.0 units tomorrow. I do a before bed test which is +2 after PMPS.

That's a good post on Testing and Shooting; I had seen a similar one but there was no mention about the lancets being angled; always something to learn.

As for the needles, I'm using the same but 6mm; I'll try the 8mm. Are you ordering online from this Diabetes Source site and if so, are you satisfied? I'm looking for a good website to order because it's getting kind of expensive at the drugstore!

The last point is the stinging with Lantus; as you say, he gets a small dose but we never know he might be more sensitive, he's a little guy... I'm very glad to see that Levemir helped for that. Thanks so much for all this!

Hi Lyane,

Saw this post on other board. These are the ones I mentioned earlier.

@Julie and Honey Only BD syringes are easily available in Canada. Monoject have their own issues with fine dosing and not being able to measure accurately the amount of insulin in the hub.

Lyane, I got my syringes from the Safeway Pharmacy, about $5 a box cheaper than the link I posted. I never shopped there, they just had a good on line picture of the box. Definitely shop around, prices vary quite a bit here between stores.

One more thing, if his +2 is quite a bit lower than the PMPS, it’s a good idea to get a later test if you can. The +2 being lower can signal an active cycle and this is cycle six so the depot should be full.

Normally, I test at +2 on the PM cycle but last night I tested at +3: PMPS 452; +3: 439 and this morning AMPS: 549!
