Still won’t eat on his own, I syringe fed chicken baby food 5 am and also stuck with 1u, not a bad start for only having 1u at pmps, he did go poo cause there was some runny poo prob due to Cerenia, he never has runny poo, I looked it up and it said it can cause it, he didn’t puke up what I gave him throughout the night, total of 3 syringes so thats good, will pick up appy meds this am and maybe he will start eating on his own

Whew! I was worried about him...glad he's keeping the syringed food down...and his number is up a bit this morning...better stay with that reduced dose until he gets over whatever it is that's bugging him. Tell him Luci wanted to pawty on New Year's Eve...never too late for a pawty - feel better Bella boy! The ladies are waiting to go to his tiki hut for some catinis and surfing :) Happy New Year Jamie!

Agree with staying with reduced dose, wasn’t to bad start, actually better than most amps
Wish he wanted to pawty, he is walking around more, I’m wondering how much food I need to give him and how often I’ve never had to syringe feed a cat before, he’s had 2 so far and the syringe is A little,bigger around than a dime and I fill it up

Ok it says 4 syringes 3x day or
2 syringes 5x a day
So I need help deciding when to do this, times?? Just can’t think
He’s already had 2 this am, 1 at 5 and 1 at 6, I didn’t do together cause I didn’t know
Time needs to start at 4:50am I shoot at 5

I'm happy to read that Bella is keeping the food down now.
I've struggled with the quantity when assist-feeding as well. What I usually do is scoop a normal meal's worth onto a plate then try to get that much into them gradually over maybe an hour or two.
It's curious that he didn't start to eat on his own once the cerenia took effect. I'm wondering if he possibly has a tooth issue that is causing him discomfort? Does he make any effort at all to eat (ie lick at the food then turn away)?

He did eat a temptation treat, yes I know he’s not suppose to have but I wanted to see if he would eat it on his own, the vet checked his teeth 2x said they looked good

Since I’m feeding him and he’s keeping down can I go back to his correct insulin dose?
 
I hope Bella starts feeling better. When Teasel was ill in May and June Cerenia didn't help much. When he came home from hospital I used ondansetron (Zofran) and it seemed to work better. I used cyproheptadine for appy instead of mirtazapine. Also seemed to help more. It's best to tackle nausea before giving appy meds. :bighug:

He quit puking, didn’t last night after food and hasn’t today, so I’m assuming it’s working, hopefully

Is he eating enough? You have a lot of experience dosing on low-ish PSs but if you're not sure he'd eat what you want him to to "steer" BG it might be better to be more cautious.

He’s ate 3 syringes of cat food so far today, maybe take him up to 2 instead of 2.25 or let’s just see what th day brings when we get the appy meds?
 
Catching up here. So sorry Bella isn't eating well. You have wonderful advice.

The only suggestion I have is to try a/d recovery/critical care food (get from vet). It's seems to be tasty to kitties and it thins nicely if you are syringing food. Higher in calorie.

If Bella will eat that on his own then start mixing his regular food in it to get him back on track.

Will have to get tomorrow, the vet is closed today...thank you, I’m currently alternating chicken baby food and whole earth duck

Pharmacy opens up at 11 and will go get as soon as they call, if they don’t call by 11:15 oh I will be calling
Wanting to get some into him before Cerenia wears off

Maybe you could try putting the Baby food in his dish now, Maybe he'll eat it? Then gradually add his regular food & eliminate the baby food?

Happy to hear he is eating even if it's just a tiny bit. :)

So glad to see he ate a little on his own. Hopefully the Mirtazapine helps, too - it really helped Darwin when he had pneumonia last year!

When assist feeding, have. Target number of calories you want Belle to eat every day. In order to avoid hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver), they need to eat a minimum amount per day. I was good with about 2/3 of regular calories required. When I fostered a hepatic lipidosis kitty from the shelter, that meant one can of Recovery formula per day for a couple weeks, until he started eating on his own, About the same when Neko was off her food. She was eating a bit on her own, but I was still calorie counting. That was around 200 calories.

Paula’s suggestion of Royal Canin Recovery is a good one. It is LC. AD is also OK, but more like medium carb, but if that is what they will eat, so be it. Both are a nice creamy texture that syringe nicely with just a little food. The second benefit to these foods is that they aren’t regular foods in their rotation. Some cats can develop food adversion to whatever they are being assist fed. My foster kitty did, and wouldn’t eat anything with chicken it it for a couple months.:rolleyes: Side note, so many products have chicken!

So glad to see that Bella is eating on his own again. Lots of vines for this success to continue. You've gotten lots of good info. on assist feeding. Back in the day there was an assisted feeding group on Yahoo. I wonder if it still exists. It was highly recommended.
