December 29, 2018 Condo - Dosecrease - Lou's peeing outside the LB :(

Good morning all,
We increased Lou's dose to 2.75u yesterday morning, and he barely dipped a toe into the yellows. At this point, we usually see some action, so I'm kind of starting to freak out. Also, I've been worried about what's causing the perpetually high numbers, and I found out last night that Lou's peed outside the LB at least once. So now we need to bring him in for a possible UTI. The earliest I could possibly bring him in would be Wednesday because of the New Year's holiday. Should I really wait that long? And that's if the vet has an appointment that day, which I doubt they will (it's usually a week out). How long should I risk waiting? Or should I just bite the bullet and go to the ER vet?

Do you have any anti-inflammatories (metacam/onsior for example) handy that you could give him while you wait for the vet appointment? It would help with the UTI, particularly if it's crystal-based. Good luck!
Unfortunately not. :(

I used D-Mannose along with an AB to help Furball get over her UTI. Sending prayers.
I got some D-Mannose after his UTI last year, but I never got around to using it. Do you think I should start it now or wait until he's been seen by the vet? Can anyone give me dosing advice with it? It's been so long since I've had that discussion!

Sigh. This is not the way I envisioned my Sunday to go. I'm at work today again, so that doesn't help matters. I feel so helpless right now. Other than the peeing outside the LB, he seems perfectly fine. The only inclination that something is wrong is the perpetual high BGs, less playing, and sleeping more. Last time he had a UTI he refused to eat, but there haven't been any appetite issues.

I hope you all have a wonderful day and your kitties surf safely! Sending vines to Miss P (@Phoebes) and Mr. Jones (@Tracey&Jones) and to anyone else in need. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I would start the D Mannose. Most of the UTI in cats are caused from stress and are not from bacteria. The vets tend to over RX the AB's without a sterile catch to see if bacteria is really present.

I am glad that he is eating for you; that is one less worry.

Sending :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I would start the D -Mannose now. It can't hurt if he ends up not having a UTI and can help if he does. Furball doesn't always eat all of her food in one sitting, so I divided up a capsule into three smaller capsules and gave it to her twice a day to make sure she got some into her. Sending prayers.

I hope the D-Mannose takes care of it and his numbers come back down, avoiding the need to see the vet at all.
Hope your work day goes well and that time just flies while you are there. You'll be back home with Lou in no time

Dr. Lisa has a page on UTI’s https://catinfo.org/feline-urinary-tract-diseases/

I had a civvie diagnosed with cystitis one week after Neko got the FD diagnosis. A couple possible things, glucosamine chondroitin may toughen the bladder walls. You have Lou on a low carb diet, make sure you are adding plenty of water, and see if you can get some options that are lower phosphorus. Try Feliway or other calming methods, such as Rescue Remedy for pets. Stress can be a trigger for episodes.

Best of luck. :bighug:

So sorry you aren't feeline right, Lou! Drink lots of fluids, eat your foods (and D-mannose), and get extra rest-n-snuggles.

What dosage of D-Mannose powder is everyone using?
Great question! I found HERE saying a level tsp 4x/day, which seems like an awful lot. I'm assuming that's when you suspect an infection? If so, how long do you keep that up? I have the powder version, not capsules. What about preventative dosing? 1/8 tsp? How often do you do that?

From what I just researched here, seems 1tsp 4x/day for a day or two during the infection and then 1tsp/day for maintenance.

Thanks Paul! That sounds like a good plan to me. Definitely don't want to play this game again. :)

I did give him 1 tsp D-Mannose with his PMPS meal. It blended in beautifully and he ate it like a champ. Good sign!
