Yes, home testing is the way to go. Visits to the vet can raise blood sugar, and the fructosamine is a measurement of BG over a period of time, not what's happening "right now". It saves you some bucks at the vet also, because you are not paying for office visits and tests that you may not need right now.
Shooting blind can be a dangerous situation, (and 3 Units twice a day is a lot) we advise testing before every shot to ensure that it's safe to do so and not taking the chance of putting Max into a hypo event. I know, my vet had me doing the same. Not good. We are invested in helping you learn how to keep Max safe and manage his diabetes.
First, I would advise you to revisit the Home page and read the "Getting Started" and the "Education" sections on the right side of the page. I know you already know some about treating feline diabetes, but this info is a great beginning primer, and there is a section on home testing also.
