? I am going away on Monday for a week. I need advice

Currently Mario is on 6.5 units. He has been on that dosage for around 10 days. My mom will be able to give him the shots, but she won't do any testing. I need a safe dose for Mario for all next week.

Thanks!

Why won't your mother test him? Does she not know how? Is she alarmed by the prospect of blood?

It's really unsafe to give insulin without testing. I would be really concerned about this.

I hope others with more experience will jump in on this thread.

Mario’s nadirs aren’t bad on this dose, at least whet we can see. Night time testing is still a rare event. Any chance of getting a +4 or 5 during the day today? Looks like he might want to go down today. If his nadirs remain in the lowish blues, this could be a good vacation dose. Or if you are worried, you could go back to 6.0 units for the week. That might be an easier dose for the pet sitter to measure and give you a bit of safety with no testing. Do you think Mario will eat OK while you are gone?

No, she won’t do it. I hardly trust her to give Mario the insulin. I was thinking of lowering the dose to 6 units. It’s better to be high that low. Any other advice?

I don't know your living situation, is Mario living in the same place as your Mom (normally? Or just during your vacation?), or is she just stopping by wherever he stays twice a day? That might influence my decision some. If she is there with him and would notice odd signs, vs only stopping by at shot time, that could make a difference.

And I echo Wendy's question -- do you expect him to eat OK while you are gone? If not, that alone calls for a temporary dose decrease.

My mom lives with me. Mario knows her perfectly and trusts her. Every time I travel my mom takes care of my babies. Plus she loves Mario! She rescued him from the streets when he was a kitten

Ok, so eating normally shouldn't be an issue, his routines won't be disrupted at all, and she would definitely notice if he was acting "off" (not eating, vomiting, stumbling, etc).

Then I think I agree with @Wendy&Neko, I like 6.0 units while you are gone -- and I would also try to get some testing during the nighttime cycles when you can.

I would make a sample syringe of colored water to 6 units and tape it to the cabinet at eye level where she will be drawing the insulin for her to compare her dose to.

Ok

Ok, but now I’m confused because today’s amps was 197. Lower than the days Mario was on 6.5 units.

Our kitties always seem to want to mess with us right before we go away!

It doesn't say what you gave this morning, was it 6.0 units? If so, then you had only given 6.0 for one dose before that and you would still be seeing results from the 6.5 dose that had built up in the depot.

I am glad you got a mid cycle test during the day today -- 117 is still very safe. I think that you will still be ok on 6.0, but you can always reduce further. Maybe 5.75 if you leave a sample syringe for Mom to compare to, or 5.5 if you would rather her be drawing up to something directly on the syringe.

Yes, I gave 6 units yesterday night for the first time.

Can I leave the syringes for the week ready with the insulin in them so I don’t worry about my mom making a mistake?

Technically, that is not advised. It has to do with a possible breakdown of the lubricant costing inside the barrel of the syringe contaminating the insulin.

It has been reported as being done by some folks in the past, but I wouldn't advise it.

Ok, I won’t risk it then
