I feel like I should be going up on his dose, but I'm not sure how much. We increased from 1.5 units to 3 units on Monday night. I feel like it's time to increase, but I don't know how much. Can someone advise me on this? I will do a pre-shot check, but I'm sure it will be over 300, as he was 396 at 4:00 p.m. He is due for his next shot at 7:00 p.m. (ET). Thanks in advance!

Have you read the stickies? Do you know which protocol you're using? TR or SLGS - if not you may want to do that. I believe based on the protocol that you're following you may want to wait 6 cycles before changing the dose - hopefully the experts will get on and see your post and response. Nice job on your thread title.

So, here's another suggestion for you - when you have a question - there's a little '?' icon in a pulldown menu on the left hand side of where you start typing your thread. Click on that -so that your thread has a '?' - especially now that the holidays are upon us...many people are racing around, traveling or doing holiday stuff...might not see that you actually have a question...

Proceed cautiously with dose increases...don't want to back yourself into a hypo situation. Lantus takes time to build up in the depot...but with those numbers I'd definitely be asking that question...Just modify your thread title (use the 'Edit Title) button to add that '?' mark to catch some 'eyes'... :)

Great advice-I added the '?' to the title. Thank you! I don't really have a protocol to speak of right now...I'm kind of flying by the seat of my pants, trying to get him out of the 300-400 range right now. He has not been regulated since we switched to Lantus. No dose has been effective for him so far. When we took away the DM dry food I thought his dose would need to be decreased, but so far it hasn't made much of a difference other than the first couple days. Dropped him down to 1.5 just to be careful, then back to 3 once I saw he was still high. He has had 6 cycles of 3 units now...with no improvement. I hate seeing his numbers this high for this long. I'll follow whatever protocol is suggested to get him healthy!

These are the stickies: They're at the top of the Lantus forum: with the yellow tags next to them. I realize he's a bit high...hoping @Bobbie And Bubba will have a moment to visit your condo here and provide some dosing advise for Mr. High Numbers.. I see she was on the board a few minutes ago...

I have read the TR protocol previously. I guess I will go up to 3.5 and see what happens. It's so hard to wait...and wait. He has been hovering around 300 for two months now, and I am terrified he is going to get really sick. It's so tempting to just switch him back to Vetsulin. I don't know what's worse-to have him go lower for a few hours and than back up again, or hardly ever go below 300. :( Thanks again for the info. I really appreciate your help!

You saw a blue number yesterday and have seen some yellow too on 3.0 units. That would mean an increase to 3.25 units. Right now he’s bouncing because of the blue. According to the TR Protocol, you could increase tonight. SLGS is not a Protocol, but a dosing method developed here over the years. It would have you wait 4 more days before increasing.

Hey there, can we get you to set up a Spread sheet to keep track of his BG numbers? It is really helpful so that you can see trends. And it helps us to help you with dosing.

If you click on any of our signatures you will see a link for SS ( spread sheet) which we can all see.

Here is the link for setting one up.
Information on setting up the FDMB spreadsheet

And here is how to interpret the SS.

AMPS is the AM Pre-shot test (always test before shooting to make sure they're high enough to give insulin)...then the U column is for "Units" (how much you gave)

The +1, +2, +3, etc are for how many hours since shooting...so +2 is 2 hours after the AM shot, +9 is 9 hour after, etc.....Since we're all over the world here, saying "he was at 148 at 8pm" doesn't tell us anything...we need to know how long since his last shot

At the end of a 12 hour cycle, it's PMPS time! (PM Pre-shot) and the whole thing starts over.

Oh, and Welcome to the L, B, & L forum. Please keep posting and asking questions. That is how we all learned.

Thank you for the welcome :) I am learning lots already. Lots of helpful people here. I do have a spreadsheet set up and linked in my signature, but it's just named "Emmitt" and when I just looked at it now, I realized that it's kinda hard to notice. I'll try to go in and rename it later. I'm working right now :(

Oh, yes, I see it! I thought it was a profile page rather than a SS.

What time zone are you in? That is also helpful to add to your Signature page.

So very glad you found us! I know I am so happy to be here with all the knowledge and great advice.
