I mentioned this in my Treating Ziggy #4 thread, but I figured I'd make a new topic for this occasion. Thanks to Diabetic Cats in Need (thank you so much, @Chris & China!), Ziggy was able to go for his pre-dental checkup a couple weeks ago, and tomorrow morning I will be dropping him off at the vet to get his teeth taken care of! I'll be working from home so that I can go and get him in the afternoon when it's all done.

I will make sure that he has no food past midnight, and will remove all water at 6:00 AM. No insulin in the morning, either. I also bought him some special toys at PetSmart as a present for when he gets back!

I will also be reducing his dose after the procedure, just to be sure he doesn't go hypo.

I don't really need any help right now, but I just wanted to post something to commemorate this occasion. Back in March I was afraid of Ziggy being put down, and now he's about to have the biggest barrier to regulation removed, thanks to the kindness of DCIN and to the people here who have helped us!

I will post updates tomorrow! And if I forget, I'll post them...eventually!

So today was the big day, and everything went well! Apparently Ziggy was very well-behaved at the vet and handled the anesthesia like a pro. Surprisingly, he didn't need any extractions at all! They scaled his teeth and now they're just as white and clean as the day they grew in. I'm still amazed - they looked totally rotten to me before. They gave me some kitty toothpaste to use after a couple of weeks to make sure he remains in good condition.

His mouth seemed a little sore tonight so he had trouble eating, but he did lick up a whole bunch of baby food after the appointment. Hopefully he starts to feel a little more comfortable soon.

I'm so happy that everyone here and DCIN were all able to help! I never thought I'd be able to get Ziggy's teeth treated, so this was pretty much a miracle. :cat:

Natalie, I am so darned glad to read this!!!! Look at that wonderful cat! He's as cute as he can be, and he's come so far. You have been incredible, taking on the responsibility of his care, getting him moved in with you, treating his "beetus". I read all your posts then, it just brings tears my dear. Know how wonderful you are, and how fantastic he is. Hugs to both of you.:bighug::bighug:

Thanks, everyone — Ziggy certainly seems to be feeling better! I admit that I'm still not very happy with his numbers, but maybe I'm too anxious to see some good results. It's looking like I'll have to switch to Lantus insulin after the holidays. I'm hoping that, with the dental procedure done, I'll finally be able to bring his BG down with a new insulin.

Lantus is a very good insulin for cats. It's very expensive in the USA though so many people order it from a reputable Canadian pharmacy, Marks Marine Pharmacy, in Vancouver. Check out post #112 in this thread: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/...canadian-pharmacies.49608/page-2#post-1344374
