Hi Everyone!

My name is Dena. My 12 year old kitty, Cosmo, was diagnosed with diabetes in August. It was overwhelming when he first got diagnosed. My vet wanted me to do SO much stuff and spend SO much money. I tried everything the vet suggested and poor Cosmo was overwhelmed as well.

I've been free feeding him dry kibble his whole life so the first thing we had to do was get him on a feeding schedule which I did. Now that I have done further research I understand it might be possible to get him off his insulin with the proper wet food. I'm so excited!!!

Going to pop over into the Feline Health section because I have some questions on home glucose testing that my vet just doesn't want to talk to me about. :(

Welcome Cosmo and Dena! The forum is a great resource. There's plenty of information about low carb wet food and home testing.
My Coco was diagnosed in June and after switching to a low carb wet food no longer needed insulin. She's been off-the-juice so to speak since the end of July and holding very well.
Once I made the decision to home test, I didn't ask permission. It was more of a "this is how I'm caring for my cat" statement. The good news was the senior vet in the clinic had a diabetic cat and he was pleased I would consider home testing. I'll be purchasing the same glucose monitor he uses since my cheap Walmart one is being discontinued. That way, there shouldn't be a discrepancy in our numbers.

HI Keri! For the meter, that's what I did. The vet showed me that he uses an AlphaTrak so that is what I purchased. I love the idea of making it a statement and not asking permission. That is exactly what I'm doing!!! Now that I've started home testing looks like Cosmo might have gone into remission as well. Of course I need to gather a lot more data over a longer period of time, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)

On a side note, your Coco looks like my other cat, Sassy. Sassy is a 10 yr old little torti diva. :)
 
Hi Dena..my vet recommended AlphaTrak as well. I did a lot of research on others out there and decided to go with it and I believe it is probably one of the better ones. It is so accurate and does not take much blood .My Marissa has become quite resigned to the fact and does not give me a problem since it is so quick. I would personally highly recommend it to anyone new and wondering which one to get. I believe it is a little on the pricier side but I think the functionality of it is worth the price if you can afford it.
