Good afternoon L, B, & L ~

Things have been a bit busy here with more care for Mom and Bubba had to go back to the vets on Friday. His ears got all gunked up again, and thankfully not inflamed or red where I test , but more down closer to his head. What alarmed me was he had a quarter size ecema looking spot below his left ear. It had some black flecks on it that looked like mites. Upon looking into his left ear, it was all gunked up again and it looked like mites. Off to the vets we go.

Different vet this time, it is not mites, but another micro test of deris in his ear and on his neck shows more bacteria and yeast. This vet wants to hit him with 2 weeks of AB this time instead of one and recheck in 2 weeks. He also started him on Tresaderm for his ears. I believe that could be contributing to his higher numbers today. @carfurby , did you notice an increase in BG's when using Tresaderm?

The Vet feels this is an allergy. Could be food, could be environmental. He said this time of year some cats react to molds and Lord knows we have had nothing but rain and soggy weather since summer. Fingers crossed it is mold and not food issues.

I do have to wonder if it's food allergy since right before the ear thing started, he had 4 days of diarrhea and he still has some days of harder dry poop.......

Smokey was on tresaderm. I didn't notice any increase in glucose but then again he was all over the place anyways. It definitely cleared up his gunky ears and Trippers too.
 
Maybe try cutting out one type of raw food at a time? I know some kitties don't tolerate chicken well but Bubba has probably been eating it for years. Can they suddenly gain a food reaction after tolerating it fine for years?
 
Thanks @Bronx's dad and @Wendy&Neko. And lately, since the turkey salmonella scare, he's been getting a lot of chicken. That will be the first thing I stop! Going to the butcher tomorrow and getting turkey. Then he will only get turkey and pork and see how that goes because I'll be darn if I want him on AB any longer than this round.

And thanks @carfurby, I thought I remember it raising the BG's and thanks for the link for what you are using instead. I will check it out.

ETA: Do I need an RX for it? And do you think I could discontinue the Tresaderm (started it Friday night and he has had 4 squirts so far) and start the Zymox? And how long do you have to use it for?

No you don't need an RX. I'd try using the Zymox and stopping the Tresaderm. The Tresaderm says not to use it while giving other ear meds. It says to use for 14 days for chronic infections. I treated Baby once for an ear infection using the Zymox and it went away. The vet had wanted me to use Tresaderm.

Thanks Carla! I just ordered some and did an overnight express since the med was 25% off. It was only 10 bucks more than the Tresaderm from the vet......I will give it a whirl.....

Okay, I will do it! I will get lots of ground pork at the butcher tomorrow and give it 2 weeks and then try back turkey and see what happens. My vet says to give one protein at a time but the Foodfurlife peeps say to rotate 3 proteins to confuse the immune system.....oh what to believe!

Rotating three proteins is probably a great idea if they don't have allergies, but if poultry is out, it would make it really difficult to find three other options that are affordable and easily available.

I know Christina! So that would leave me pork and I already know that beef is an allergen so that would leave me lamb , duck and , rabbit.......


ETA do you think if chicken is out that would also include turkey?
 
In my house, turkey is OK but chicken is not. Any chance of you getting venison? Sometimes that works if beef does not.

I can try and get venison. I think I will do pork for a while then add turkey and see how that goes. If not good I will have to get venison commercially. I am hoping turkey will be okay. Beef is out. Bubba vomits within 20 mins of eating.
 
Sending vines for the ear whatever-it-is. Rusty had what I thought were ear mites right before he passed. Tests showed it was a bacterial infection and the medication (Motazol, a transdermal) caused him to go blind. It is possible that the blindness would have been temporary, but Rusty was so ready to go to the Bridge, that we had to help him pass.

I hope the a/b that your vet prescribed will do the trick and that Bubba will be feeling better soon. Good luck with finding a food that doesn't cause allergic symptoms. Dave's Limited ingredient pork might be a good choice if you decide to feed canned for a while.

Thanks Ella, the bacterial infection is most likely from all the scratching from the yeast infection and the yeast infection is most likely caused by an allergy. Is it to food or environmental? I am going with food since he had 4 days of diarrhea prior to all the skin and ear issues. We are removing chicken as of now and see what happens. Sigh.

Rotating proteins is great under normal circumstances and preferred. If you think there’s an I tolerance you need one protein. I learned that too late for my young one. By going back to try previous proteins I made her intolerant to pork. My vet said if the elimination works you might even need a couple months on just the one. Good luck.

That's good to know. When this all happened, he was getting chicken and pork for about a month as I took turkey out of the rotation because of the salmonella scare. So, I will give just pork for now for a few months and see how that goes.......thanks for your input, I appreciate it.
