11/4 Ming PMPS = 434 Dose increase tonight +2 = 392, +4 = 367

Well, the flat yellow cycle last night can predict a lower cycle by the next cycle or two. And sometime, cats will jump up in numbers like Ming did this AM an then start coming down. I hope that is what Ming decides to do. :)

Hopefully he goes down slow! I’m gonna be out of the house until around +3 or +4 so let’s not get too dramatic, Ming... I’ll leave some food out for him just in case

+4 = 436

Whyyyyyyyyyyy :banghead:

He’s not acting lethargic though. Actually quite energetic and looking for food. This guy...

Whyyyyyyyyyyy :banghead:
Bounce + not enough insulin. Numbers wobble around during a bounce. The night of the first he did a big drop from +2 to +4, probably enough to cause a bounce. He probably needs an increase too. We typically don't drop a full unit at a time with doses Ming's size. Though there were enough things going on at 6 units it was hard to tell what that dose was really doing.

Are you following TR or SLGS?

I haven’t decided yet. Right now I’m just trying to make sense of what’s going on. I’ve only thought briefly about how testing will work with TR and my job that takes me away for 12 hours a day. Plus I’ll be gone for a month and my mom and sister will be in charge. I’m leaning towards SLGS but want to just find a “good” dose that works first where I feel confident leaving my sister and mom in charge when I’m at work or gone. But I know TR would be more beneficial to Ming.

Those are my dilemmas.

Is there a reason he dropped so fast?

I’m also a little scared he’s got panc so that’s why the dose isn’t working.

Is there a reason he dropped so fast?
He's a cat? Not enough carbs on board? Some cats like to drop fast. In that case, one strategies is to feed the drop or get fresh carbs on board before that happens.

It's possible he has pancreatits which would impact the numbers somewhat. However, the longer he stays in high numbers you have two other worries. The first is ketones and the second is glucose toxicity, where there body gets used to higher numbers.

ETA: Sometimes you have to temporarily increase to counter high numbers from a temporary condition.

+6.5 = 437

Are we thinking a dose increase for tonight or still waiting and seeing what happens? He’s eating well at least and seems to enjoy the bupe lol

Ming just had some diarrhea poop. First time he want was solid poop. Then a few minutes later, he went again and had liquid poop and some solid. Then again a few minute later, did a little toot and a bit of liquid.

:nailbiting:

I’ll add fortiflora to his meals now? He went again and just did a little bit again.

He’s energetic though at least. Tempted to give him subq fluids right now.

Oh I just realized, would this still be considered the 5th cycle? Because I aborted the cycle after the FS on November 1.
We count the cycles the full dose of insulin was given. Aborting by feeding high carb does not impact the depot.

As for increase or not, that depends on a couple things. First, what is your ability to monitor the next few cycles? Second, what dosing method you want to use. Thankfully ketones is not part of the decision.

Not a fan of fortiflora personally, I used human grade probiotics.

First, what is your ability to monitor the next few cycles?

I'm able to monitor tonight. Tomorrow I'm able to monitor for most of the AM cycle. He gets his dose at 8 am. I have to leave the house at 9 AM to drive someone but should be back after 10 AM. Then I can monitor all Monday night and the next Tuseday morning as well. He's also going with me to work on Tuesday night since he's getting a blood test so I can monitor him at the hospital.

Basically, I can monitor him lol

Second, what dosing method you want to use.

Let's go with TR right now since I have the ability to monitor him for the time being.

Thankfully ketones is not part of the decision.

He also urinated and no ketones.

Not a fan of fortiflora personally, I used human grade probiotics.

Any suggestions?

I went ahead and gave him 100 ml fluids since he's so high anyway and he was drinking water and the scruff test looked like he was a bit dehydrated but not too bad.

I like to use Florastor. You can get it at most drug stores and online cheaper. It is a great probiotic to give when there is diarrhea because it can be added to the food without detection and also, it can be given the same time as antibiotics where most probiotics need to be separated from the AB time by several hours.

For diarrhea, you would use 1/2 capsule twice a day . When the diarrhea stops then go to an maintenance dose of 1/4 capsule twice a day for 3 days more days.

@Sandy and Black Kitty @Wendy&Neko I'm sorry to ask again but I vaguely remember someone mentioning that humulin R and Lantus can be bought in pharmacies? Do you need a prescription for them? I'd like to get humulin R but I don't want to inform my vet just yet that I'm thinking about having it.

I got my R at Superstore pharmacy. It’s about $25 a vial. No script needed for insulin for cats in Canada. Of. Purse I found that out after paying my vet to write a script. Pharmacist knew more about Lantus formulations for cats than vet did.

Ming isn’t seeing the kind of numbers we would like to see at this dose, he flirts with blue and no green, a 0.5 unit increase would be appropriate, at your convenience.

As for general probiotics, my vet recommended Natural Factors Protec. It dorsn’t Have the diarrhea stopping ability of Florasor though.

C'mon Ming work the juice red is not your color. You've done great with your furbaby. It will all start making sense. Look at Phoebes ss last year. Never thought I'd see greens. Or have enough insulin. :bighug:

WOW! It was really inspiring and comforting to see Phoebes progress in her ss. Seems like Phoebe and Ming has/had similar issues. Vet suspected possible IBD but I don't think we pursued it or it's not apparent.. I can't remember why we ruled it out. I don't know much about IBD though.

I even showed my mom Phoebe's ss. We were talking about what to do once I have to go to work and when I'm gone for a month and I feel so much better knowing she's on board. Back at the PZI forum, when I finally started home testing Ming, my mom was really against it. She's a nurse herself but our previous vet had said it wasn't necessary to home test so she didn't like that I was going against vet orders. But I think since Ming started going to the new vet and I'm taking the time to explain to her what's going on and why we're doing what we're doing, my mom's a lot more on board. Plus she sees Ming doesn't mind at all about being poked in the ear - something she didn't want to do before because she didn't want to hurt Ming.

Out of curiosity: Do you find the pred affects Phoebe's numbers at all?

I think I’ll do a test every 2-3 hours now unless something happens.

Ming's tummy is quite gurgly :nailbiting: Time to get that Florastor. And I forgot to give him the fortiflora during PM meal.

Thanks for the suggestion!! Just wondering if you're using the 250 mg caps or 500 mgs?

Slow and steady Ming. I think you can get a few hours nap between tests tonight. Just make sure he has his regular food available.

Some more reading http://www.ibdkitties.net/supplements/probiotics/

Thanks for the link, Wendy :) I was just looking at a site similar to that.

Okay, I think I'll stay up for another hour, get a test because curiousity will just kill me and sleep again. I'll get his food ready before I sleep. I'm still looking into automatic feeders... most are for dry food but I know the trick of freezing a can and letting it melt to stay fresh but I wonder if I can do the same for freeze dried raw.. I'll have to experiment.

Edit: he did the liquid poopoo again. Just a moderate amount. Probably what the gurgling was about. He's bright though.

Off to sleep :)

I put down his food and he ate it right away so.. there goes his snack. I'll give him another smaller snack later. The number might be food influenced. He ate 20 mins before I took the reading.

He's also just chillin by his litter box. Probably will poop again later. Him and me are so alike... I, too, also will lay in front of the washroom when I'm experiencing the runs... TMI? Sorry!!! LOL

Yes. We had her down to .25 units. With the start back on steroids we are now at 1.25 units. Steroids we believe caused the kickoff to the diabetes to begin with over a year ago. But, that said, they have helped her with everything. She's a happier cat. Still working on weight gain but, we will take it one step at a time.
Tell your mom, she wouldn't give insulin to any patient without testing first. Why wouldn't we test our furbabies? Vets do not get alot of teaching on cat diabetes. It's more an overall look at it. And a very small amount. She probably got more knowledge in her diabetes classes in nursing school. I know we had a whole semester on it. People here deal with it 24/7. Eat, breathe, sleep diabetes.
FYI I am what you would call a testaholic. In the beginning I just had to have the data to learn her reaction to it all. I've learned to test not so much because I see the trends and patterns. Knock on wood. It will all be second nature to you soon. Good job with your furbaby. We know you love her, because your here willing to learn. :)
