feeding chicken gizzards

I read that feeding gizzards is good for the teeth, and otherwise healthy to eat. Does anyone know if there is a limit to the amount to eat in a week? The ones I have are about 0.5 oz

One gizzard every few days is what I usually see people doing.

You don't want them "filling up" on them....just getting a good "gnaw and scrape" in. Gizzards are very fibrous so do a pretty good job helping keep teeth cleaner

@Idjit's mom feeds hers gizzards once a week if I remember correctly. I have not offered any to Bama, fearing he won’t eat them and then what would I do with the rest of the package? I hate the idea of throwing them out or worse, trying to eat them myself.

@Bama Kitty Mom (AL)
They apparantly taste good, though I don't know personally- at family functions with my husbands family, the gizzard is a delicacy and I've never been quick enough to sneak it away lol.
I bought the gizzards frozen, and then just broke one off and let it thaw in oven after I cooked my meal. Rhubarb loved it! It sounds revolting though lol

I do feed Idjit raw chicken gizzards and I watch him gnawing away so enthusiastically! I have considered giving him them more often, in fact he has had two this week, plus a fairly large chicken heart. I bought two whole chickens this week and have cooked them to bone, freeze portions and cook the bones for broth. He got one of the innards yesterday and I swear I saw him smiling afterwards. I have purchased a pack of gizzards and hearts, thawed just enough to break it apart and keep them in a doubled zip loc bag in the freezer. I just thaw what he's going to get that day.
@Bama Kitty Mom (AL) gizzards are quite good. I used to cook them like you would a chicken fried steak. Very chewy, and tasty. I'm not a fan of liver, so if you find it as repugnant as I do, know that the gizzards taste nothing like.

@Idjit's mom

I think the repulsiveness of eating them came from the idea that they were full of dirt and grit that the chicken swallows and that helps grind up the food in the chicken's digestive tract. But I just found an article that explains chicken gizzards you buy in the grocery store have been cleaned of the grit but if you buy them from a butcher shop, you may have to clean them yourself.

Oh, didn't know that about getting them from butcher. We started eating them a long time ago, young and poor. Gizzards were very cheap and it was MEAT!!! LOL We were so tired of ramen, split pea soup and beans.

I've been wondering the same; since making the liver soup and bone broth in the last few weekends, I've been thinking about buying some organs for Jaxa (liver, heart, gizzards) and wondering about how I should prepare them and how often to give the mix (puree/chop/chunks) as a supplemental snack. It seems like they would be better raw too, but again I haven't seen sure about that. We have a couple butchers in the area so I know I can get decent quality organs at least.

How long should I wait to give gizzards to Rhubarb after dental cleaning and a couple extractions?

I am no expert, but I think I would wait until the mouth heals. You don't want Rhubarb disturbing the clots in the wounds from the extractions. Idjit really gnaws on his gizzards and that is tough meat.

I feed Harry a raw diet and he gets a tiny piece of liver most days.....they shouldn't have too much liver. About the size of a small plum seed. It is very good for them but not too much. I also feed a couple of raw chicken hearts each day and a small piece of kidney. And of course gizzards a few times a week. I freeze it all after cutting to size and get out of the freezer as needed. You can lightly boil the liver or fry in a little olive oil if you like but I'd give the others raw. I don't cut them up ....I just let him chew it. It is very good for their teeth and for them mentally to let them chew the food. I don't cut up any of Harry's food.. I feed him raw whole chicken wings or large pieces of chicken cage and whole gizzards and chunks of meat.

What’s the deal with liver? Seems it’s added to every canned cat food on the grocery store shelves.
