Spike has been doing well on this dose then yesterday and day before he started going up....thinking it was maybe his pancreatitis. This morning (now) he is at 163 AMPS. He drops low. I want to drop his dose this morning..I have not fed him yet. I can be home most of the day, but will be gone from about +3 to +6. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Remember you're shooting the nadir - what's his lowest numbers at nadir? If you're uncomfortable get a 1+,2+ and based on those numbers feed accordingly (MC or HC)...if he's dropping too fast abort the cycle with Karo syrup and high carb food - does he eat dependably?

He has gone to 112. What makes me uncomfortable are his cliff drops, like yesterday.....AMPS: 274, +3: 126. I'm afraid he will drop too low. And if I'm not home (+3 to +6) today to catch it, or even if I do catch it...Karo syrup, then emergency vet? Or can I handle it at home w/o going to Vet? Dependable eater? We help him eat so that we can shoot him. We somewhat help with syringe feeding. Yes, he will eat some high carb food on his own, but will just lick the gravy....

If you can't be there and he's a diver - like my Luci - she'll drop 100 points in an hour! You can abort the cycle at any time by feeding HC food - put some Karo syrup on his paw and he'll lick it off - and be prepared for high, high numbers when you get back...

If you don't already have an auto feeder you may want to look at them - I bought mine from Amazon and I love it! Luci typically likes to dive between 3 - 6+ as well...and I have to sometimes (yep, believe it or not) leave the house - so I leave LC, MC or HC based on what her 1+ and 2+ look like...if she's making me nervous I feed her HC! and put Karo on her paw - test before I go...she's usually flying up then...but better a day too high than an hour too low.

I shot full dose. I tested him again and he was going up. So being an hour late is a decrease in itself. I will test +1 and +2, then I have to step out for a few hours. DH will "try" to test, but I don't think that will work....he has never done it, is colorblind, so seeing the blood itself will be a problem for him.

Unfortunately, I can't use a timed feeder. I have other civvies, especially one who just can't eat enough food. She will scarf up anything...nothing is ever easy.

Yes, he is a diver. But at least DH will be home, if he "looks" like he is going to low and he can't test him or see the blood, he will be able to give him the karo.

Also question??? Last night when I was testing urine for ketones, just thought I would see how the glucose strips would work seeing that he has been dropping....the glucose strip showed "NEGATIVE." How can that be? I have used these prior and they have all responded "high" but last night it was negative, even though his BGs are still somewhat elevated. Can it drop that fast from his urine? I don't use them on a regular basis because I test blood, but just thought I would try it. Any thoughts?

Luci had ketones in her urine at the vet - one time - I went and bought Ketones test strips - and tested, tested, tested...when she was high when she wasn't. I never got another ketones reading of any subsequence....the ketones come from a spillover of glucose in the urine...so although she was high - sometimes when I'd test she was high - the ketones never appeared in her urine again...I suppose the Lantus may have helped with controlling the amount of glucose that was spilling over - perhaps some of the other experts on here might be able to give you more information - as I can only say what happened in my case with Luci.

Update on today's progress. AMPS: 163 Waited an hour +13: 171. Shot full dose 1.75U. +1: 200 +2: 180 +5: 182 +7: 158 +9.5: 179
PMPS: 178 (30 min early) +11.5 shot full dose 1.75U. +2: 113 (wow)

I was going to wait until +5, but at 113 after 2 hours, I will check again at +3.
At what point do you NOT shoot? I'm trying to read everyone's concerned posts about shooting. I know it depends on their NADIR, but there has got to be a point where you just don't shoot or you shoot lower. I think I'm getting close to that time....so any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!
