My work has been overwhelming all month, in fact, I'm heading in there today to finish up things for a deadline of tomorrow. I'm exhausted from work, cat care and the state of our country, but I won't get into politics here. I've got nothing - no spirit, no energy and I work at work and work at home with cats.

Our other cat, Cookie (11 y/o) has been very sick, very sick. Apparently she has a thyroid issue that is causing vomiting and super soft stools with many episodes of severe diarrhea. Vet wants her on Royal Canin Gastro kibble to assist in getting some formed stools. She is on medicine for the past month for the thyroid, the diarrhea, to help her absorb her food and soothe her tummy/intestines. It has been a month of laundry, clean up, laundry, clean up, test Tiny, fall into bed exhausted daily. Not sure how much more I/we can take.

Tiny Sole's BGs are in the 300s mostly, and I feel like a failure with that too. She's now getting 3 units of Lantus because she's running too high. That seems like a lot to me, but right now, it is what it is.

So hello, everyone. Not sure how often I'll be here, but today I thought I would at least let you know that I'm not dead...yet. ;-)

I do hope others are having a better go at things.
Over and out.

XOXO, Joanne + Tiny Sole

Hey Joanne! I just looked you up a few days ago to see when you last posted and was worried about you. Now I know why you haven't been on line much. Sounds like a lot going on. I am sorry your life is crazy right now.

With not a lot of testing going on in the evening , it's hard to know if she is going lower then bouncing in the AM. ( Remember, kitties tend to go lower at nighttime) I know things are rough for you right now, but if you could get a test in before you go to bed that could prove helpful. Please don't take this as criticism. Sometimes too much insulin can look like not enough. Whenever you have some time to be home if you could do a curve, that would be really helpful to know if she is where she should be dose wise. Start with the AMPS and test every 2 hours till PMPS.

Thanks for checking in. We worry about each other! :bighug:

Thanks for the responses, my friends.
I appreciate the continued support despite my absence.
I'm doing Curves on Tiny today, every two hours, and will do it through midnight tonight.
If I have my faculties together throughout the night, I'll try to get a 3:30 AM test in, but I can't make any promises.
I'm exhausted 24/7. Not even my vitamin B and D is helping!
Stay tuned to the spreadsheet, and thanks again.
XOXO

I agree with what Bobbi posted. PM tests may help you figure out if there's a pattern to Tiny Sole's numbers.

One thought re. Cookie, probiotics may help. In particular, S. boulardii is helpful at controlling diarrhea. You start with about 1/4 of a capsule twice a day and gradually increase to 1/2 a capsule.

I do have some and will give it a try. Cookie is on a thyroid med, pepcid, and Tylosin, a powder antibiotic and Cobalequin, a supplement. She's a very fussy eater. What has been a successful way for administering the 1/4 dose of the probiotic?

If there is not MOS in the S. boulardii , ( Jarrow has the MOS in it, Florastor brand you can get at CVS does not ) she should not detect it in her food; my guys do not.

I would start with 1/2 capsule twice a day, then once the diarrhea stops, go to 1/4 capsule for at least 3 more days. It works like a charm.

I bought the Jarrow probiotics and just started it tonight.
Is the Florastor you are talking about the one for humans that can be purchased over the counter?

Yes, you can get it at CVS and it is okay for the kittes as I directed above. But if you have the Jarrow, it has MOS in it and it is bitter and you would have to gel cap it to get it into her.

The Florastor cost more but worth it that you can put right into the food. I did find it cheaper online but when you need it now, you need it now.

Did Cookie go for it in the food???

QUESTIONS:
Has anyone noticed that when you start a new Lantus pen the BGs seem to respond dramatically?
I started the new Lantus pen yesterday AM.
I think this may have happened today while watching her curves closely, and I think it may have happened the last time I started a new Lantus pen.

CURVES:
AMPS: 375, +2: 389, +4: 355, +6: 303, +8: 223, +10: 169, +11: 116 - fed prior to PMPS which was 166.

She did! But, I think I'm going to use the Florastor, I have some here.
I'd rather not take a chance of things not being palatable for her to eat at this point.
Poor kid.

Yes, a new pen has some more punch to it than an older one. Good job getting the curve in. Can you still monitor tonight since that is the lowest she has been in a while ? Start with a +1 and then a +2. I know you are tired but this is good progress..

I thought that might be the case since I saw it earlier on her spreadsheet when I started a new pen in July.

Yes, I'll get a +1 in about 30 minutes at 9 PM (EST), and a +2 and a +4 at Midnight.
Then, I'll try to get a BG somewhere between 2 and 4 AM.

+1: 206
Confession: I did give her a five Temptation treats after her PMPS.
The other three got some, and she so badly wanted them too, so...

Also, I gave Cookie 1/4 of the Jarrow S. boulardii in her food at 8 PM and 1/4 of the Florastore in a little yogurt just now, so I'm hoping of all hopes that she has a better night tonight. This diarrhea thing is so hard on her and not much fun for us too. How long do you think before we might see some relief for Cookie with the Florastor? This has been going on for a LONG time; worse the last month.

Thanks for the suggestion!
XOXO

The temptations are high carb. But, the number you got for the +1 could be a typical food hike of about 50 points plus some temptations. Can you get a +2? And if it is the same as the pre shot or lower then this could be an active cycle. And then post, I will look for you.

I thought they were medium carb; I didn't check the list. Ugh. Won't do that again.

Yes, will test at 10 PM that will be +2. Be back soon.

Here is the direct link for these treats. They are$ 8/bag but when I tell you they are worth their weight in gold. I let Bubba outside and when I need to get him in to test and/or feed, if I go outside and shake the bag he comes ( except for recently in early Sept. he pulled an all nighter,) As I said, the 2 cats and 2 dogs LOVE them. I think there is crack/cocaine in them, LOL.

It is hard to say. With Bubba when he had GI upsets it was from something bad he ate out in the fields and he usually would turn around in 2 days or so on the Florator. With this issue going on for a long time with Cookie, I just don't know. Does the vet think this diarrhea is due to her thyroid issue? Has she been retested since she was on the thyroid meds to make sure she was at a normal level?

I give my guy Slippery Elm Bark ( SEB( mixed with George's Aloe Vera Juice twice a day to help soothe their intestinal tract as Forest ( civvie ) has hyper t also with diarrhea and Bubba suffers from constipation/ diarrhea combo and the SEB helps with that.

Okay, she is on the rise. Can you get one more test in? I like that she is coming down from where she has been lately. If you are up for one more test at 10:30 EST, I am hanging with you. Post again please. If she is still on the rise, call it a night

Will do. I was going to test at Midnight, but I'll do a 10:30 PM (+2.5) and if I'm up, I'll get that +4 at Midnight too.

And yes, Vet things the diarrhea could be due to the thyroid; Cookie has had some vomiting too.
We will be retesting her thyroid levels this weekend when we go to the Vet - Sunday, I believe.
I finally have a Vet I that is working with me and I can trust.

that is when Cookie started to have digestive/poopy problems.
My guys had soft serve diarrhea for about 3 days when I first started on YA ( they are not eating it now except for every blue moon) and then the soft serve stopped just like the owner told me it would. Some kitties can not digest the pork. There is also a chicken formula.

Okay, since +2 is onset and she is starting to rise, I think you could probably call it a night. She has been lower than she has been in a while and will probably bounce a bit. IF, you are like me and get up through the night to pee  around her +6, grab a test. All data is good data.

Good job today with the curve ! Keep up getting those nighttime test only if they are before you go to bed to see what is going on.

Since Cookie is quarantined in her own suite at night to lessen the poop mayhem, I typically leave out some moist food for Tiny and the two boys through the night. I will do that tonight and will do my best to get another BG at the typical 3 AM mark...my special time of the night! ;)

Thanks for the help, @Bobbie And Bubba; much appreciated!
:bighug: + XOXO

You are so welcome, Joanne. I am so glad that you posted as I had said, I had just put a search on you and Tiny as I was worried about you.

Keep posting when you can and good luck with Cookie and the diarrhea. I hope the S. Boularrdi helps and helps ASAP.

Hope this give Tiny a little kick in the buttocks to get her into better numbers.
