9/19 China AMPS 223,+7 98 Still not eating/drinking...worried mama

China still refuses to eat anything....I've tried everything, including her favorite ham baby food and today she won't even smell it. Last night she looked interested, but wouldn't eat so I tried 4mg of ondansetron but it didn't seem to help.

She's drooling badly....her whole chin, front and front legs are soaked....not bloody (a little blood-tinged but not so much today) so I try to clean her up/dry her off every once in awhile but she just seems to want to be left alone.

She's laying in the cabinet under my bathroom sink and if I bring her out, she just goes right back in so I'm letting her stay where she's comfortable for now.

Called the vet and she doesn't seem too concerned yet...said to syringe her some water (5-10cc's every 3 hours) and if she doesn't eat in the morning, give her a call back.

She also said not to give her any bupe today. I think she still thinks she has some kind of reaction to the bupe (see yesterday) but I am wondering if this big change in her behavior is due to the shot she gave. Last time they gave her that pain shot she acted like she was being chased around by an invisible alien until it wore off in 2 days.

She thinks it's just due to her "being older and taking more time to shake off the anesthesia"

I don't know what it is, but it's scaring me:nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:

She does purr when I'm cleaning her up, but we all know that purring doesn't necessarily mean a cat is happy....and she's definitely not happy :(:(:(

So sorry to hear China's having a rough time lately, I hope she starts feeling better soon. Sending the both of you many prayers and vines from the heart :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Did the vet give you any cerenia? If she did, I’d give the ondansetron and cerenia together and see if that helps. You can give the ondansetron three times a day.

I also disagree about the bupe. Do you want to try a half dose?

Tons and tons of vines. Poor sweetie.

Was it a buprenorphine shot they gave last time? Poor China, tons of vines going her way.:bighug::bighug:

I second Marje's suggestion on both Cerenia and ondansetron if you have both. Neko needed both at times. Does China seem dehydrated?

I have seen Cerenia can be dosed 1 mg/lb for oral Cerenia. Unfortunately I didn't know that ata the time so was underdosing. :(Might be worth a call to the vet.

Oh, China-- feel better soon! You have a worried mamabean and a whole bunch of anxious aunts and uncles watching over you and waiting for you to eat!

Hope the additional meds (and time) do the trick. Mega-vines...

I got 16mgs of Cerenia and 4mg of Ondansetron down with about 7-8cc's of water.....and I got her to take a few licks from her very favorite thing in the world....these lickable treats

I forgot I had a 4 pack but there's not much to them....but at least she showed a little interest (but gave up quickly)

She acts like she's forgotten how her mouth works. Her 3rd eyelid is showing and she has one "oogy" eye.....and she's still drooling all down her chin and chest (but not as much)

She also got some bupe a little while ago so I sure hope something makes my baby feel better!!

Poor China...and didn't you have a chemical stress test today? I hope you both get to better health soon....Tell Ms China to stop worrying you...you need to rest and relax...and not worry ... :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Well it's been 2 hours and she still won't touch anything to eat. :(:arghh:

I've noticed something else that's just strange....when I go to test her BG, it's really hard to get her ear to bleed.....this has not been a problem for years!!

I actually had to poke it 3 times to get enough for a test!

Sorry to hear Miss China's dental recovery is not going smoothly. IDK, but the kitten Leo did horribly on bupe and didn't start to eat until I stopped it after his FME. The shot they gave...is it a nerve blocker? It may very well be that she is "out of it" in some sort and if a nerve block, I believe they last up to 72 hours. Please eat your fuds sweet girl!

The shot they gave...is it a nerve blocker?

No....it's just an injectable form of bupe

She's been on oral bupe before without any problems or issues but she had a bad reaction to the injection a couple of years ago (and I guess they didn't read their notes right and gave it to her again!!)

But the reaction she had last time was totally different...she still ate just fine but acted like she was really freaked out by "something"

(and I guess they didn't read their notes right and gave it to her again!!)
:banghead::banghead::mad::mad:

Totally different circumstances but Leo didn't eat or hardly ate for almost 5 days after the FME...and none of the vets were concerned :banghead::banghead::mad::mad: Sending prayers that it's the shot they gave and she's having a different reaction. Hopefully by morning she'll be back to her normal eating. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Oh Chris, I am so sorry that China isn't springing right back after the dental. It is mind boggling that the vet used their AT after you ask them not to. And I echo to the others that I would not pay that portion of the bill. You probably all ready paid it just to get them to relinquish China to you, but it is not unreasonable to take the bill into the office when you are feeling better and talking to their account manager and have that $$ refunded.

I don't have any experience with that drug she received but it sounds like it is not a good fit for her and I hope it works out of her system ASAP.

Also, I would talk the vet about why teeth that are all ready showing signs of absorbion were not dealt with. Guess they think that 19 year old cats should be taken under general anesthesia often, NOT and / or that you have a $$ tree.

Sending hugs. :bighug:

Hi Chris. I'm so sorry to hear all the problems China is having. Years ago my cat had her teeth just cleaned & when I brought her home she was Hissing & acting weird. Didn't want me to come near her. I found out they used Ketamine as the anesthetic.
I knew vets used it a long time ago but i didn't think my vet still did . My poor kitty was freaking out for 48 hours. Hiding & looking scared. When I asked my vet he got angry, said he'd been using it for years. (I changed vets after that)

Injectable ketamine puts a cat completely "out" for about an hour, although he won't necessarily completely come back to normal for up to 24 hours.
It can change Kitty's personality. Can cause salivation,& vocalization

She didn't get ketamine.....I've never liked it so we discussed anesthesia before the dental

The induction was done with Proprofol and I think they used isoflurane to keep her under during the dental

Is China feeling any perkier and eating a bit more?

No, not at all.....she's still drooling all over her front and not eating....I did get her to lick a tiny bit of her lickable treat, but she still acts like she doesn't know how her mouth works anymore

She's still under the bathroom sink in the cabinet and won't come out without me dragging her

I guess we'll be going back to the vet in the morning

I’m so sorry China is still not feeling her usual self. I know how worrying it is when they are unwell and not eating. Poor darling
Sending many more appy and feel better vines.

Dear Chris,
I've been just catching up and learning that China's dental didn't go so well. I'm so sorry that the vet didn't follow your instructions, and doubly sorry that poor China got a shot of something that caused so much distress several years ago. I hope that it will simply take a bit more time for all of those "meds" to get out of her system. We are sending strong vines for our LagoonMeisterin to feel all better.

Chris, take care of yourself, too!!
:bighug::bighug::bighug:s and scritches

Will check back later to see how the vetty appt. went.
