Honestly, I don't know how much longer I will be posting Squallie's FD stats, they have kind of taken a back seat to other, more pressing concerns. I believe we are down to days, rather than weeks.

His vet has offered to treat him with prednisolone, a last-ditch effort to shrink this mass. The problem is, it carries a huge risk of ulceration, potentially a perforating ulcer; that would be the end, no questions asked. Squallie is at even more risk since he has been on piroxicam. I have spoken to someone whose cat had a perforating ulcer after being on prednisolone; it's not pretty. I do not want to do anything that might cause him pain or distress. Does anyone have any first-hand information regarding prednisolone, good or bad? If I am only going to extend his life by a few days or so, I do not think the risk is worth it. I really don't want to make this decision, but I do not want him to suffer in any way. If, on the other hand, it provides him relief and gives him a few more happy weeks, I would definitely put him on it. Please. weigh in, especially if you have found yourself in this same situation. I love my boy so much, I can't even imagine...
 
Have you asked about depo medrol? Not sure if it would have the same impact on a mass, but I give monthly injections of that instead of daily oral steroids for my cats with allergies. I did give daily prednisolone to a cat with cancer several years ago instead of chemo. I can't say if it helped the cancer. I gave daily prednisone to my dog with Addison's Disease for a few years.
 
I have no knowledge on such matters, Lucy but do so much wish I did . ❤️ I pray he has many comfy days with you and that in the middle of it all you both have peace . My heart is breaking for Squallie , for you ....I truly have no words . You must do what you think is best Lucy! I support you either way! Honestly, I would probably do the same thing if I were in your position. You and Squallie are in my heart and prayers!

... and we love you and Squalls. We'll be here . You take all the time you need in the days and weeks to come but do not go entirely missing missus.

I've no wise knowledgeable words re pred. It comes down to what you feel will make Squalls the most comfy for the time that he still has.

I did go and read that the mix of pred with peroxicam is consider somewhat toxic to the gastro system if used together as they interact. However I also read that peroxicam in itself can cause gastro problems and bleeding

Is he off the peroxicam now Luce?

All corticosteroids come with risk & given Squalls age a very short course would be the order of the day if you do decide to go with this.

What do you feel that your vet is really saying to you.
Is he offering the pred as he feels it will be of help to Squall right at this moment, despite any risks .
Is he offering the pred as a help but is underlining the risks to maybe have you not choose this.

Has the HV given you any alternatives? The remedies the HV sent for Simba helped keep her comfortable and gave me about three more months with her.

My civvie Kitty has a granuloma on her tongue. She has been getting prednisolone for several years now to keep it under control and hasn't had any problems with it.

It’s a steroid so I’m pretty sure comes with the same risks as prednisolone. It would have the same effect in cancer as the second oncologist I saw gave it to Tiffany. I gave prednisolone to my lymphoma kitty and it kept her going after she had to stop chemo because the oncologist trashed her kidneys by missing a UTI. It kept her going for 9 or 10 months but she wasn’t on piroxicam.
It’s a tough call.

Dear (((Lucy))), We faced this decision just a short time ago. We knew that Rusty was failing, but every time we thought it was "time", he rallied. We were glad we waited a little while. Our main concern was that we wanted to assist his passing. We did not want to cause him to be killed. That is a big difference. Rusty made it clear to us when he was ready to leave. Squallie will tell you, and you will know. Do not be afraid.

Thinking of you and sending prayers for strength.

p.s. Depo Medrol is what Rusty was getting (1 injection every 30 days). It helped him with his sinus congestion. I don't know what effect it might have on Squallie's tumor. Perhaps ask the vet what he thinks.
 
Ugh, I wish I had some knowledge about what you are dealing with, I can only offer prayer. Squallie loves you, Squallie is so loved. You are doing the best you can with the information you have, so take care of Squallie as only you can and please don't forget to take care of yourself in the process.
 
Sending you strength and vines for poor little Squallie. So sorry to hear of his situation and wish I could help with the treatment but I'm not familiar with it. We all know what it's like when our loved kitties take a turn. You know we feel your hurt too, and send prayers.
 
I hope Squallie is doing a bit better... Maybe you could check and see if there is any way prednisolone could come with gastric protection, slow release? That could help with impact on stomach, maybe use also a stomach protector?

I am so sad to read what you and Squallie are going through. We all know how much you love him, and you will make your decisions with his best interests in mind. He knows that, too.

I have had several cats on Prednisolone, both long and short term. Other than causing Harvey's diabetes, I didn't see any negative side to it. Of course, every situation, like every cat, is different.

I have always had a very good relationship with my vet, and whenever I was having trouble making a decision on treatment, I would ask, "if this were your cat, what would you do?" She never steered me wrong. I don't know if that would work for you, but thought I'd share.

Lucy, when I first came to this forum a year ago... I saw Squallies mom & loved the name. I looked at your info & his pic & thought he was a handsome dude! I told Baby; (oh yes I did) that I should have named her that because she’s so vocal. Anyway, just saying I’ve always valued your input, knowledge & your love of Mr. Stripey man! Trust your gut.

If the medicine cannot provide a better quality of life, that is something serious to consider.
No one wishes to make a situation worse or add to the suffering of our beloved animals and it sounds as if the medicine could make things worse - I hear your questioning.
There are so many unknowns to these difficult and heart-wrenching decisions we have to make.
You can be assured that you've been the best Mommabean to Squallie, and you will have done all you could've done.
That is what love is all about.

I will hold you both in peaceful love and light and you weigh your options.
