Ugh at the vet now and freaking out. They scraped some tarter off his back molar and it bleeding but vet says his numbers aren't surprising her and that his teeth are all solid. She ran a urine test right, no ketones, slight crystals which is 'normal' according to her and a little bit of protien, but doesn't think it's a tooth issue.

Basically she said "we don't know what it is, he could just be having a bad day" and to just let him be fussy with eating.

I don't know what to do. I feel helpless and scared. And him turning his head funny when chewing just feels like a red flag and it bothers me that shes just shrugging that off.
 
Do you have any dental vet specialists near you? Problems can lurk below the gum line that do not show up in visual inspections. Neko had two dentals where she looked fine visually, but the dental specialist did x-rays and found issues below that needed attention. Your vet would have to give a referral. Or maybe your vet would humour you if she does dental x-rays. Of course, that requires anesthesia, so fasting.

Can you take a video on your cameria of him doing the funny head turning? I found videos to be invaluable for diagnosis when cats won't "perform" at the vet.

Yeah, we are stopping at a specialty pet store on the way home and I am gonna buy a whole variety of different low carb wet foods, like tiki cat or whatever else, so hopefully he will cooperate

Ugh, I hate not having answers. I already have pretty severe anxiety (can you tell :P ) and this is just making me I'll. And seeing his tooth bleed after she broke off a chunk of tartar with her finger (which I almost passed out since I thought she broke off his tooth!) just set me in a panic.
 
I have heard that Tiki Cat makes a product Velvet Mousse that is soft and easy to eat. See if you can pick up some of that, or maybe an all meat babyfood. The babyfood isn't good as a long term food as it's not complete, but will get some food in him.
 
Mmkay, so looking at the paperwork they gave me and having my boyfriend tell me what they said (since he is ridiculously level headed and basically a recorder)

The exact words she used is "we know he has some mineralization in him" but this lab report says "none to rare" for all 3 crystals- unclassified, CaOx Di, and Struvite. But then there is a grey box that has a few little dots very spaced out. So maybe I misheard minerialzation and my brain filed it away as crystals?

I will try to upload everything later tonight and maybe take a picture of the box.


Stopped at specialty store. Got 3 packets of Tikicat Mousse, 2 cans of Tikicat, 3 cans of BFF in gravy (they are still 2-4 carbs so within range) and 3 cans of Weruva Cats in the Kitchen....2 of them are 8 carbs but at this point I care more about him eating then I do 1% more carbs.

Do cats ever just have a few bad days? I thought a cat being off eating is automatically something VeryBad.

Does he seem nauseated or in pain?

Do you have any slippery elm bark? You can make a slurry and syringe it into his mouth. If nauseated it might help his tummy, if it is the mouth/tooth/guns, SEB can provide some relief as it coats and soothes and reduces inflammation. Kinda 2 for 1 ;)
 
Well, hes wolfing down the tikicat chicken and egg (normal, not mousse) but every time he gets a big chunk hes doing the head thing. I got a video but I'm not sure how to upload it...will finagle after dinner for myself
 
:bighug::bighug:Both of my cats liked the Tikicat mousse. My Gizmo would usually eat it when he was being picky. Hope you have some luck getting him to eat and that you can get some answers soon. :bighug::bighug:
 
Hey Gen, it seems like Gizmo has a lot of the classic symptoms of a tooth issue. Lack of appetite was always a first red flag for me with Bubba as he is like Gizmo, ready to attack all food. And then you mention him turning his head side to side while eating, another sign. They are trying to get the food off the bad tooth.


Some other signs are pawing at their face, and dropping food from their mouth while eating and excessive drooling.

I agree with Wendy and try to find vet dental specialist to see Gizmo. They will take x -rays which is very helpful to diagnosis.
 
Thanks all...guess this weekend is gonna be spent doing research :(

Got home from dinner and all but a few bites that were stuck to the edge of the bowls was eaten, and his numbers are curving okay. I at least feel confident enough to sleep tonight I think.

He REALLY fought me just now when I tried to check the tooth that was bleeding to make sure it wasn't still. It frustrates the heck out of me because they are supposed to be a full service animal hospital with walk in hours for non emergencies and reading so much online I can't get why she was hesitant to even do a cleaning. The checkout notes said I should just really focus on his insulin dosing....what?! When she asked about his dosing and I told her he just went from 1.25 units to 1 she was like "wait, how are you doing .25?" And seemed confused when I explained I get half unit marked syringes and measure between 2 lines.

The unfortunate thing is that as a walk in clinic you get a different vet every time. This one was an older lady who seemed to handle him kinda rough (though I'm sure I'm biased since she broke off that plaque and made him bleed which I'm sure clouds my judgment). But they are basically one of the only vets that works with my work hours.

Grrr I hate not knowing. Because my mind then defaults to "let's assume it's the worst thing possible in preparation!"
