? Jester's latest labs - vet wants me to give up

Jester's the pickiest cat I've ever had.
When I experiment too much with his foods, he literally stops eating.
The worst was almost a year ago - he wouldn't eat more than a quarter of a can a day and I had to syringe feed him.

Carbs is what influences his diabetes not calories (not the same thing) , until you can figure out what's making him lose weight I wouldn't give him less food and you can give him just plain egg whites ( cooked ) mixed with his regular food if you don't get the egg white powder that will really give him a lot of high quality proteins (maybe even make him a little bit less hungry)
 
After ten days of following this vet's instructions, Jester's BG isn't good.
It keeps going up - AMPS nearly 400 today.

But, if my weighing technique is good (can't keep him on the scale), he very well could be 8 pounds as of 9:00AM.
It's taken all this time to reduce his food intake from 4 cans a day down to between 3.5 and 3.25.
Based on the calories in his preferred Friskies, I still need to reduce that to about 2.5 cans.

I'm supposed to do a curve this weekend and have planned it for tomorrow.
 
I would be very careful with monitoring his weight, because unregulated diabetes can make very him hungry, can make him lose weight and as I mentioned before giving him less calories (less food) is not going to have any influence on his blood glucose levels as long as those calories come from a low carbohydrate food (just make sure the food you are giving him is low carb), but can cause him to lose even more weight for the look of the curve you did he needs some more insulin not less food ( I do suggest you ask for dose guidance in the prozinc forum)

I've been getting advice for months, changing his dosage, monitoring his BG, trying supplements, and Jester still lost weight all that time.

This is the first time he's gained anything at all and it was nearly a pound. While I'm not thrilled with his BG, at least he's not losing ground on his weight.

I have an email with questions waiting for the vet for her input.
 
Of course, when the vet recommends going straight from 1.5U to 2U, I definitely push gently back.
Told her that I'm not comfortable going up that quickly without being able to monitor and said I'm good at eye-balling 1.75U.

It'll be interesting to see how she responds.
 
It's not very scientific but I'd rather see Noah put on some healthy weight and then deal with his numbers later. Once body weight goes down it can be hard to get it back. If all that advice you're getting is not working maybe it's time to step back and rethink the whole thing. Easier said than done but the answers you're getting seem more like guesses. This is Jester, not a lab specimen!
