I have been reading several posts on here the last few days, hoping I can get some help here.
I have a male cat, 16, who was diagnosed with diabetes yesterday. I took him in off the streets 5 years ago. He went in because he couldn't walk. On Thursday he fell off of a table (2 feet high). He was moving around with a limp so I thought he was just sore. Thursday he didn't want to eat, I thought it had to do with pain. Friday was the same only he was struggling to walk. By Saturday, he couldn't walk or sit. It was too late to get him into the vet so I had to wait till Monday. When doing the x-rays to check his spine, the vet noticed his kidneys were very enlarged. Tested him and he diagnosed him with diabetes. He thinks he may have had a spinal stroke from the fall on top of this.
Since Thursday, he has eaten next to nothing. He didn't drink much at first but I at least have him drinking. I offer him water every 2 hours in bed. I have him laying out with towels for when he needs to pee. He was letting me know when he had to go up until yesterday evening when he got back from the vets.
After all this, I noticed today he had something hanging in his mouth. I thought it was food or something. I went to get it out and it was his gums. It looks like his canine went into his bottom gums and sliced them. I don't know how the vet missed this. His lower lip is swollen too. The canine on the other side is severely decayed as well. This either happened when he fell or when he has a stroke. I only noticed because I am force feeding him a supplement while he isn't eating. He drinks on his own but he still wont eat and I think it is because his mouth is in pain. He never lets me near his mouth to have noticed the decaying tooth. I read it was linked to kidney problems in older cats and now I feel horrible for not seeing this sooner.
He is going to the vet in the morning for that now and I am scared he will need to be put under to get work done and already being as weak as he is, it feels so risky. I am a mess over here.
Back in September he went in for sudden vision loss, he was completely blind. The vet didn't see anything wrong and his blood work was okay. He tested him for diabetes and said he was normal. His vision came back a few days after and then another 10 or so days went by, and he couldn't see again. The vet couldn't figure out what was wrong and insisted they were working but he didn't know why he couldn't see. Looking back now, I think he has diabetes for a while and something was missed.
He has been eating a diet of Sheba Pate with Fancy Feast dry prior to this. He didn't eat much dry but I kept it out for him after I went to sleep so he had something if he got hungry.
I need help. What food do I buy? It seems he needs high protein, moderate fat, low carb and low phosphorus. Is there anything I should know about dental work in his condition? I really don't know what to do with myself. I have been a mess. I may have only known him a few years but he means so much to me. He needs to start eating to feel better and heal his back, but he needs to get his mouth sorted so he can eat. I know he is hungry because he leans in for the food but then he pushes it away.
The vet gave me a few cans of the k/d science diet stuff and the proplan NF but I want better food. This is too high in carbs for diabetes.
EDIT: He isn't overweight. He has been a healthy weight since I have had him. I know for some cats, they become diabetic from obesity but he is actually in the range he should be. I forgot to mention this.
Also, his readings for GLU and BUN was 220 and 118. His kidneys are not in good shape. I just want to do everything I can to help him.
