New to diabetes

Hi my name is Jennifer and I recently learned my cat has diabetes. He has gone from 1 shot to two shots a day. I'm nervous I have never had a cat with diabetes and I was relieved to find this forum where I can talk to other pet owners who are experiencing this.
 
Hi Jen! I'm new here as well. I was so nervous about giving the shots, but once I got the hang of it, all went well. Did the vet say what your kitties numbers were?
 
Welcome to FDMB, Jennifer. It seems overwhelming at first, but it gets better. You mention you are injecting insulin, are you also home testing? Home testing will let you know how the insulin is affecting your kitty, and help keep him/her safe. You can learn what you need to know here, there is lots of information to read and support from your fellow members. You can post questions and concerns in the Main Forum, more eyes to see and get the responses you need.

Ralph and I did our first two insulin shots yesterday, he is doing well. How do you home test? His glucose was 393 at the vet what is within normal range? I also appreciate the feedback on the food to give him.
 
2 shots a day is what cats are supposed to get. The insulin doesn't last all day in a cat as they have fast metabolisms. You asked about home testing. I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC at home.

It's been one of those days :banghead: Home testing involves poking a small hole in the outer ear, getting a tiny drop of blood and testing it with a blood glucose meter and strips. With practice it becomes routine, it does not injure your cat and it could save your cat from having a hypoglycemic event (when the blood sugar is too low). We all learned to give insulin, home test, change the diet if necessary. I know it seems like a lot, but step by step you will learn and you will have lots of help. :bighug:
