Hi all.
Jades PMPS was the lowest it’s been so far (122) I usually give her 1 unit, but only gave 1/2 this evening because I’m so scared of hypoglycemia. Was this the right move? I’m second guessing myself. And the shoot wasn’t as smooth as usual either. I think maybe I was at a bad angle. She gave me a little cry but forgave me pretty quickly. Thankfully.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

The best thing to do when you have a PS that you're unsure about shooting is to stall, don't feed and post for help.....Test again in 20-30 minutes and see if the number comes up without the influence of food.

That will make a difference in the advice we give.

It's important to learn to gradually shoot lower numbers.....Those of us with enough experience will shoot anything over 50 (68 on the AlphaTrak)

I'd test again at +1 and +2 just to make sure she doesn't drop......just because you reduced the shot tonight doesn't necessarily mean she won't drop too low. The depot can continue to effect the numbers for several cycles.

I just tested her an hour in and she’s back up to 223. Am I wrong in my thinking that Insulin is just what lowers her #? Or does Insulin work in whatever way it needs to work?
Thank you always taking the time for me!
The Vet says to shoot as long as she’s not 100 or below. 122 seemed low to me.
Still learning and suspect I will be for quite some time.

Also, is it safe to assume since she’s on the rise, that’s she’s not going to drop to a dangerous level anytime soon? I’d hate to go to bed and have something awful happen, but I do need to get some rest at some point.

It's possible that's a big food bump (but that's a pretty big jump for food unless it's high carb) but I also have to wonder how low she went today

This could be the beginning of a bounce from a lower number that you didn't catch today.

Time will tell.....I'd still get a +2.....that can predict a lot about what might happen later in the cycle

We don't suggest shooting under 150 (at first) until you fully understand how your cat responds to both food and insulin unless you have someone who's able and willing to stay online with you as long as necessary to make sure Jade is safe.

Gradually you learn to shoot lower PS numbers, but I'd stall on a 100...especially on the AlphaTrak until you have more data on Jade

I did give her a couple treats after I saw the number was kind of low, then her food and 2 more treats. (4 total, I think) Feline hairball greenies. The vet tech said those are ok in moderation, I even asked twice just to make sure. The food I gave her was FF Chicken Chunky. Now I'm starting to panic a bit......:nailbiting:

What's the number I should hope for at 2 hours post shoot?

Since you're using Lantus, I'd really suggest you start posting on the Lantus forum starting tomorrow

You'll get the most experienced eyes there

It's not required or anything....You can continue to post here in the Health forum if you like

The Greenies are actually high carb.....we don't recommend them for treats.

Now ECID of course, but we've seen these "rules" apply enough times to most cats that they're a good place to start

If the +2 is about the same as the PS, it's usually going to be a pretty normal cycle....gradually lower to nadir and then gradually back up to the next PS

If the +2 is higher than the PS, that's usually the sign that a bounce is starting and it's OK to take a pokey break (and get some sleep if possible!)

If the +2 is lower than the PS, that's your "early warning sign" that you better plan on getting more tests in later in the cycle.

Some cats do better with predicting at +3, but most seem to follow the "+2" pretty well.

I need to learn the lingo!! HA! The term Nadir throws me off, but I figured what ECID means!! Depot means a stored amount, yes? Will you be up for awhile? Im going to test her in 30 minutes. And thank you!

Nadir is the term for the lowest point in the cycle....usually around +5 to +7, but can be anywhere!!

Depot....yes, the "spare" insulin that's stored in the sub-q layer of the skin and gradually released into the bloodstream

Will you be up for awhile? Im going to test her in 30 minutes

Yeah, I can check on you or make sure someone else who knows what they're doing can!

They all seem to love those Greenies!!….of course they all seem to love the crappy kibble we used to feed them too

China didn't like any flavor of the "Pure Bites" either.....she either got little pieces of chicken or the Orijen Wild Boar treats (lots of kitties who don't like most freeze dried treats love the Orijen Wild Boar)

Looks like you're going to be able to get some sleep tonight!!!

Thank you again and again. I'm going to get Boar!
