Litter Box size

I had smaller litter boxes for my female kitties, and soon realized when I adopted my boys they weren't big enough :p, the boys are just too long in the body. I replaced them with larger boxes, and even then it's a close call ;)

One kind of box we have is one of the storage containers that go under the bed. It's kind of low-sided, which has made it easier for a couple of kitties with physical challenges to get in it, but of course it makes it easier for the litter to get kicked out. Big as it is, one cat likes to back up right to a corner, so sometimes she pees over the edge--thank goodness for puppy pads.

The concrete-mixing tub sounds nice because it doesn't have the nooks and crannies of the under-bed box. (I keep feeling like the way I describe it, it sounds like I keep the litterbox under my bed! But no.)

ImIgoing to have to get my hubby to read this. We have four cats and most cats pee or poo over the edge of the litter box. I mentioned using a cement mixing tub ,but hubby wouldn't go for it. I may just take the cement box out of the garage replace the litter box that has the most mroblpro. That's a great idea.

The cement tub has been mentioned before and is a great idea. We had a 28 pound beast who used an enormous Rubbermaid I brought home. I did have to use a jigsaw to cut an entryway for him on one side, then sanded down the rough edges.
When he got older and had some bad arthritis I made a shelf for him 2 steps down into the basement. Of course the other eight cats thought that was great and it became a real mess.
The "rule" about having one more box than the number of cats in the house just doesn't work. I've wanted to try a kids splash pool but never got around to it. Like something maybe 3 feet around. This is in a house with an unfinished basement of course, not for everyone.

lol getting a kiddie pool crossed my mind before finding my favorite litter boxes ever.
i do laugh at that one per cat box rule, like yeah i am going to have 10 boxes plus extras in my house, not!!

we have done fine with 4 (currently 3 since 1 was barely used) of the $20 (on A) giant petmade litter pan that are huge (35x20x10 inches) and look better and are taller than the plain cement pans we saw at store, plus they have side cubbies holes to hold your scoopers.

i do scoop no less than twice a day though and have no peeing outside of them at all except when we had our beloved oreos who passed away last year that was a tall boy and peed standing straight up! thankfully he peed towards wall so we just made plexiglass shields that we hooked unto back of box edge to catch his pee.

I have one that sometimes stands up.... I put command hooks on the wall, put holes in a puppy training pad and hang it so it drapes down the wall and tucks under the box. Works well.

well that would of been easier to do and clean up every day, darn why didn't i think of that!

These things are great. I think they're meant for picking up doggy doo-doo but it's indestructible and will scrape those pee blobs off the side of a box.
Better than the tiny spatula you see at the supermarket. You can always spot a first time cat owner when you see them scratching their heads looking at teensy tiny scoopers and microscopic litter boxes. :D Mine came from a Pet Value in Canada.

I mulled over that idea too, but I know someone who tried it and it's not as great as it sounds. At least not if you use one of the larger kiddie pools!

1) It's awkwsrd to scoop. Depending on the diameter, you almost have to either get on your hands and knees to scoop the center or step into the litter. Otherwise it's easy to lose your balance.

2) At some point you'll probably need to dump and scrub it. Getting the remaining old litter dumped out is cumbersome, and the tub can split if you lift and bend it too far.

3) If you have a cat who likes to back up to a corner and overshoot the edge, or who's an "elevator pee-er," you'll probably still have the same problem. I had one who could have had a litter box the size of an Olympic pool who still would have found the edge and peed over it.

4) Most of the pools have ripples in the plastic at the bottom... Kind of a pain to try to scoop when urine-soaked litter gets down into them.

Despite all that, I too have been tempted to give it a go. For now, though, I guess the high- walled 35 gallon storage totes will have to suffice!
