Greetings to all. Since diagnosis two weeks ago Jayden continues to remain stable and the fructosamine results today were 392. It is my understanding that for a diabetic cat on treatment the range classified as excellent is 300-400. I am interested if the number will continue to move toward the lower end of this range after more therapy. I have purchased a pet blood glucose monitor and am learning how to use it so I can home monitor. The initial trauma of our experience is over and we have all settled into a new routine. I suppose now it is a matter of good routine insulin therapy and a watchful eye going forward for any signs of potential imbalance. It is a blessing that we got her regulated so quickly and hope it lasts. Thank you to all for support and guidance.

Hi, nice to see you. I'm glad to hear you are going to home test, it's an important part of diabetes treatment. Take some time and read the yellow tagged info and stickies at the top of the forums. Lots of information and helpful tips. What kind of meter did you get? I can't answer about the fructosimine test, but there will be someone here who can.

Glad you will be starting to test. Sorry I have to disagree with the 300-400 range being excellent. Being in that range long term invites renal complications. The threshold to prevent that from happening is under 250. Once you have the testing down you can get that range down.

Fructosamine levels are different from our daily blood glucose levels.....using a human glucometer, normal numbers are 50-120 (68 to about 150 on a pet glucometer)

A fructosamine in the 300's is good!

That is a wonderful result after only two weeks of treatment! The fructosamine results should get lower the more under control you get Jayden's glucose levels. I am glad that you plan to start home glucose monitoring. Regular home glucose monitoring is a more accurate way to know what is really going on. Since fructosamine is an average, it does not show you the whole picture. A cat's glucose can be all over the place - sometimes too high, other times too low - and their fructosamine result can still look okay.

I had the vet do a fructosamine test on Mia in April just because I was curious and wanted to have the info as just another component of managing this. Her result was 339. The 'normal' range according to the lab was 191 to 349. So, her result was great, but I regularly monitor her glucose, so I knew she was continuing to have very deep curves with pre-shot values still in the 300s. I did not like seeing her over the renal threshold at all, much less passing that point each and every day. Also, the deep curves worried me.. it can't feel very good to have your blood sugar going up and down so sharply all the time. So, even though the vet was thrilled with the fructosamine result, I decided to change insulins.

Did the 1st home test with alpha trak 2 pet meter, Got a 95 mg/dl one hour before feeding and a Lo read after food and insulin. Called the vet and we are going down to 1 unit 2x a day from 2. Her stools have become darker and less abundant since insulin, she also has lower extremity arthritis and probably neuropathy with no more jumping up. Gabapentin really helps her pain and moods. Hoping her constipation gets better. Going to ask vet about pumpkin etc. I am pleased she immediately improved on insulin but we are still regulating. Thank you all...

YIKES! Lo means less than 20mg. That is very scary and dangerous. I am glad you are going to be home testing. I do not know what insulin you are using, but 95 is a low pre-shot number, and in many cases, that would warrant giving no insulin at all or at least a reduced dose.

Could you please take a few minutes to set up your signature to include basic info like date of diagnosis and type of insulin? (Instructions: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/editing-your-signature-profile-and-preferences.130340/ ) It would also be helpful if you could set up a spreadsheet and put a link to it in your signature. The spreadsheet is a very valuable tool for recording glucose test results and insulin doses given. It will help you manage this and will help people here should you ever need dosing advice. So after our 1st home meter read (low) and talking to vet we went down to one unit twice a day yesterday. She seems less agitated. I'm wondering if getting her off dry food has assisted in her regulation requiring a lower dosage. Will test as soon as i can as she is difficult but am less worried about hypo with lowered dose. She's eating well. I'm thinking of having her retested at vet in 2 weeks to see where we are at on their end. I remain encouraged but still vigilant. Thank you.

Tested 64 mg/dL 2 hours after dinner and one unit...emailed vet. Perhaps getting her off dry food regulated her? Want to make appt with vet to correlate their glucose reading with my home meter.

Tested at 129 mg/dL 1 hour 20 minutes post new lower half unit dose...! Gabapentin helping with her anxiety and violent swings... makes it easier to test and inject too....! If it contines to regulate with just a half unit that would be great....!
