Mango is losing weight but he is always hungry always wanting treats always waking me up at night to eat he has been begging us for food whenever we eat which is not normal for him we were eating on a TV tray in our family room the other day and he literally was trying to jump up on there to get our food his blood glucose level has been in the 70s I have a call in to the vet but are there any thoughts on why this is happening he is on wet food also and we do not feed him human food ever

Yeah and we're going to be leaving in a couple weeks for a week's vacation and we have friends taking care of him want want to get it settled by then I'm so upset and worried at this point

:(

If it is that he's become hyperthyroid, I think it's usually pretty straightforward to treat (although again, I don't have personal experience). Although that may involve medication, which your sitters may be leery of dealing with. Urgh.

Mango my buddy! You're going to stress momma after she rescued you from Katrina?
Those are the exact symptoms that led to our first diabetic cat. Does Mango free feed? Litterbox look okay, no runny poo or blood? I'd insist the vet check for thyroid issues and have his teeth checked too. Is he going after soft food he thinks he can chow down easier than cat food?

His p and his stools are absolutely normal he doesn't like soft food and he still wants crunchy food which he doesn't get he only gets treats and he's so obsessed with them my Lord if he even thinks we're going towards the kitchen he goes in there and begs us for treats he is driving me nuts he wakes me up at 4:30 in the morning to eat then today I wasn't up at 9 and he wakes me up and he begs and begs for food he is driving me up a wall!!! He runs all over the place he's jumping all around he's being goofy but he's just so obsessed with food and that's what worries me he has never begged us for his food never even attempted to jump on our TV tray to get anything just like right now I just got through feeding him and he's up here looking for more food but if I put it in there he won't eat it I don't know if he's OCD or what but I'm going to go crazy with this cat!!

I guess if he needs to go on meds it's going to be after I get back from vacation or maybe they can give it to him in a pill pouch they have cats of their own so I don't think it would be a problem

His p and his stools......................go crazy with this cat!!
You do realize that was one whole sentence? We just came back from a hideous family trip and had to board Noah for a week so I feel your pain. Be patient and see what the vet says. Noise cancelling headphones?

I have a kitty who is ok with wet food but really prefers dry and we have had good luck with the Dr Eleys clean protein dry. Its under 10 gms carbs so ok for diabetics. Its not cheap but if its what your cat wants what's a mom to do.... maybe have some of the dry during the day but offer wet food when hungry so he eats that and then gets a "treat" of the Dr Elseys? Chewy.com sells the food......

Sorry about that! I talk into my microphone and I don't go back to put the periods in because I guess I'm too lazy!!

That dry food might be better for when I am gone. I have one of those automatic pet feeders. If the people that are watching my cat can't be there during the day because they're working, maybe they can put some wet food in one slot and the next time dry food. That way the wet food will not sit there all day long and get rotten. Does that sound okay with the dry food? I definitely don't want him going back to being diabetic.

He scratches at me, scratches my back my face and cries so the noise cancelling headphones would not do! Lol

I have a hyper t cat and she was always hungry, lots of energy almost kitten like, very talkative, hardly ever still, very fast heart rate, took her to vet and now she’s on meds, there are other alternatives besides meds but I can’t afford them, if that’s what mango has not matter how much kitty eats, he will still loose, so you might want to have it checked out, mine was just diagnosed a couple months ago

Since his glucose levels are good, this definitely sounds like possible hyperthyroidism. The vet will probably do blood work to check his T4. They can also feel the thyroid on a cat with thyroid issues whereas it is so small on a 'normal' cat that it cannot be felt. I had a cat with hyperthyroidism once and he had to have daily pills. There is a radiation treatment that is supposed to be really good. Someone here has a cat who has had it. Is it you @JeffJ ?

Update: Ooops, I think Jeff's cat had treatment for acromegaly rather than hyperthyroidism.

I have 1 too, just diagnosed 2 months ago

Hi I agree that getting his thyroid checked is a good idea, I don't have much experience with this on cats but my dog has it and we have to monitor her blood pressure since thyroid problems can affect it so he may need blood pressure meds at least while his thyroid is being treated, I think is not very complicated to treat it.

I leave wet food in the time feeder for a few hours without any problem, I put an ice pack under the tray on the feeder if weather is too warm or I make some food ice cubes that I leave on the feeder by the time it opens is thawed and in good condition

Okay, no more jokes. That story about boarding Noah is true so I know what you're going through. You can imagine what a hot mess I was for 7 days.
We have a pig-cat here too who eats for the sake of eating, steals food right off of Noah's dish. Your thought of "Throwing him out of my room and locking the door" has occurred to me but then my wife reminds me that I'm a good person. Uh huh
Hopefully this will get sorted out soon so you can actually relax on your vacation. Make sure you mention not only the hunger but also his climbing and scratching to drive home the point of how desperate he is. Keep track of his weight as well and maybe leave some extra water out and see how he reacts to that. I'm out!

Elmo has been on methimazole in pill form twice daily for 5 years . There is also a transdermal form of it because the pills can cause upset stomach . Just do not let vet talk you into Science Diet y/d ... it is a food prescribed for thyroid , very high carb and I believe what caused Elmo’s diabetes . Sure sounds like Mango has hyper T ...glad you r getting it checked .

I Leslie, Im fairly new, probably making mistakes, havent heard that the following is ineffective...
Treat Rusty every time I test to 2 or 3 all natural all protien dehydrated treats.
Wild boar is a BIG hit with all of my cats!
I also buy food & treats (chewy.com) based on Dr Piersons 2017 food chart.
Took me long time and really understand to find 3 or 4 that fit the criteria.
That said...still trying to regulate Rusty's dose and BG level.
All over the place.
I havent been as consistent or as exact as I should be.
However, I took away all dry food and the other 3 cats get same treats
Seems like the dont even miss the dry.
Sometime they dont even finish the evening moist food portion-never before!
Maybe the all protien treats keep them feeling satiated.
Maybe if you feed Mango these treats when he begs , it might help.
IF he isnt hyperthyroid
Best wishes

Okay Im in my pool kusing my phone right now can somebody look on my spreadsheet since I can't get to it now and look at my last blood work and see what is T4 was? The vet just called we're going in tomorrow at 8:30 for a fasting glucose test and I asked for a T4 she indicated and told the vet tech that his 75 level of blood glucose is too low for him to function on

Seems like it was 2?

I am new to this thread and also don't know much about Mango. His BG looks great. So this is not diabetes.

Yes - Leo had Acromegaly and then I got SRT (radiation) done to him to resolve it. Leo also has Small Cell Lymphoma, and the treatment for that is permanent chemo and prednisolone. I do not suspect these items for Mango.

I would definitely get a full blood workup on him. If he was my kitteh and I was bound for vacation, I would free feed him until he started putting on weight. I basically do that for Leo now to ensure he has an extra 15-20% of fat to take him through the problem times. And that strategy has worked.

I was away on business last week and Leo did not eat as much. The extra weight on him did help with that period.

Okay I did get on his T4 was 2 in November

Is more than 6 months ago, I think you may need to ask for it again given his symptoms

she indicated and told the vet tech that his 75 level of blood glucose is too low for him to function on

75 seems a very normal number Babu and my non diabetic cats move around that number too , besides he's not on insulin so nothing to worry about

There's going to be another food battle to fight with the vet. the last time she wanted me on the dry diabetic formula now I know she will want me on the dry whatever other kind of formula but my defense is I kept him on the formula I kept him on and it put him into remission. she cannot fight me on that one

Is a low-carb wet food that I'm giving him good enough for him or is there any other kind of food that I need to feed him for him losing weight to get it back on him

@Beth 73 my kitty can’t take the pills, she’s on transdermal but was also allergic to the latex they gave me to put it on omg! Now I use a Qtip

Hold your ground on this one, there's usually a way around with the food without messing with his diabetes

Wow Jeff this is great advice! (Im newish!)

About the food. If you think about it, there are no cats in the wild which eat dry food. All their prey food is wet. So the dry food we invented is not natural, and is simply a cheaper way for pet food manufacturers to deliver product.

As mentioned elsewhere, many vets sell "prescription" food. There are no prescription contents in those cans. This is another gimmick. Yes the food may be appropriate, but it is not prescription.

Mango gets only wet food I was thinking of that elzey's when I am out of town for 7 days I do not like dry food that's what causes diabetes and once I took him off of the dry food within three months he was in remission no dry food for mango

Just got done at the Vets they did blood work on Mingo. I will know in a couple days what his T4 is. his blood glucose was 136 on a pet monitor they also checked my human Monitor and it was 80. so what is the difference in a pet Monitor and a human monitor since there is such a big difference in mine and theirs

He also did lose another pound since April. He is down to 13 pounds now and he used to be a 19 pound cat. One of my good friends Cat kept losing weight just like mango with all of the same symptoms. the vet did hundreds of dollars of blood work on this cat and couldn't find anything wrong. He used to be a big cat and he was down to nine pounds. They kept saying it was not his thyroid. He went out the other day and never came back. My friend thinks he went out to die,

What happened to your friend's cat is NOT going to happen to Mango. I know you're stressed about this, don't let it ruin your vacation.
There are no prescription contents in those cans.
Prescription food is a scam. Focus on the immediate, if I were you I'd keep Mango on his wet food because that's what he's used to. He doesn't need the added stress of food he doesn't like or want while you're away.
The meter readings and meters in general are a long story for another day but 136 and 80 I cannot explain. Try testing him twice in a five minute period and make sure your sitters have fresh batteries in the meter.
It would not have been dry food that caused his diabetes. That's not the only reason to stop using it. What Jeff said about no kibble in nature might seem over simplified but it's true. I think earlier you said you would not let your vet have you go down this road. Mango is your cat and you know what makes him tick so stand your ground.
You've already rescued Mango from a hurricane so neither of you needs the stress. We all want the same thing, I'm just not a good communicator.
Sending you some of my special-voodoo-vacation-cat-luck/love. :coffee: ;)
