Hi, apologize if this overlaps a little with the conversation in another post on another forum, but need to order today as am leaving the country in 6 days. Two questions re ketone meters:

(1) does the same ketone meter work for humans and cats?
(2) the ones I'm seeing on Amazon seem to use blood to test for ketones. Am I misunderstanding that? I thought one could only test for ketones using urine.

Thank you!

The only blood ketone meter you can buy is meant for humans. The ranges you'll see on the package enclosure for the strips aren't correct for cats but there's info here on FDMB about that (I'll put a link below). You can test both blood and urine for ketones. They actually detect different ketones but ketones nonetheless. The ketone strips for the meter are very expensive but it's a good option if you can't catch your kitty in the litter box.

Thank you much, Kris and Teasel! My boy is a rescue and very skittish about anyone going anywhere near the litter box when he's using it.

I relatively recently got the NovaMax ketone meter. The strips are spendy, about $2/strip, but I have the darnedest time catching my kid in the litter box to check urine ketones. Thankfully my buddy has no problem with me coming near the LB, so that's not an issue. I love having the meter because I can test whenever I need to instead of waiting for Lou to have to go. Also, checking blood ketones is more accurate than urine (checking what's happening now vs whats happened over the last few hours). The downside is it seems to take double the amount of blood for the ketones meter than it does for my BG meter. If you are interested in getting this meter, I think the best price I've found right now is on the adwdiabetes.com website at https://www.adwdiabetes.com/product/20784/free-nova-max-glucose-ketone-meter.

I looked at that ADW link you provided, and it says it only takes 0.3 microliter (well, it actually says microleater). You think that is true?? The AlphaTrak2 takes 0.3 uL, and I know it just takes a teeny tiny spec.

When I was looking for ketone meters, they all took a bigger sample size for ketone checks, so I was thrilled when the Keto-Mojo folks told me theirs only took 0.5. It does not seem like a lot when I test Mia. The strips are neat.. it seems like they 'suck' the blood in.

I've noticed it says that, but I've had a couple of failed tests because it seems like I need a drop double the size of my Contour Next meter. I wondered about that too when I saw the amount, but it hasn't worked out for me that way unfortunately.

I have a Freestyle Precision Neo meter that takes ketone strips. It sips up the blood really well but the channel is wide enough and long enough that I need a larger blood drop than either my Freestyle Lite glucose meter or my AT meter.
