My 18 year old wonderful cat has chronic pancreatitis, IBD and when his pancreas flares, so do his blood sugars. My vet does not feel he is a "true" diabetic and I agree. In any case, I am in search of recs - if there are any - for a low carb, novel protein (for his IBD) and low fat canned food. Very much appreciated if anyone has thoughts for a diet that addresses all Obi's challenges.

i make my cat that was diagnosed in april a simple cooked homemade turkey & pumpkin with a complete supplement (currently TCfeline chicken liver mix) recipe which is low carbs and low in fat. he likes it cold out of the fridge and has been doing great, only 3 vomiting days since (pretty sure cause he got into others fancy feast food and we were trying the RC perscription canned food on one of those times). he also has had no diarrhea episodes since like 4th day on this new diet. best of all he doesn't need the meds vet originally perscribed for him at this time.

As for actually bought low carb cat food, i think i do recall reading Dr. Elsey's cleanprotein turkey canned food helped some IBD cats and it was under the 10% my vet said to feed. pricey but, not as pricey as the perscription foods!

I am not sure if turkey is considered a novel protein. This is a difficult find; a product that addresses the needs of a cat with IBD, chronic pancreatitis, and spiking blood sugars. I do have a pet peeve: companies that offer "the best" in canned food, and then also offer dry, which by my information is crap. I have heard even the worst canned is better than the best dry. While I dont necessarily believe that, I kind of get it. I dont really care about price; vet visits are more pricey than a month of food!

vets recommend novel proteins because it eliminates the possible common turkey, chicken & beef allergies right off the bat. our cat and others do well on turkey alone.
most pet food companies even the best ones offer both wet & dry so kinda hard to avoid your pet peeve when you are limited on food types. off hand i can't even think of one that only offers wet other than some raw food providers. come to think of it NV offers more than raw as well, they have canned novel proteins but, can't recall which ones were low fat. https://www.instinctpetfood.com/cats/wet-treats

dr. elsey's recommends wet but, offers dry for those not able for whatever reason to feed only wet. their dry is under 5% carbs and really is the best 'dry' food available for diabetic cats needing dry food, and non-diabetics, our cats that get it are doing excellent on it with no more poop issues.

I know it is impossible to avoid my pet peeve...just venting. Thank you for trying to assist me. I looked at the Dr. Elsey's, and I know my vet will not go for that because it is higher in fat - twice- of the Royal Canin. While fat is of questionable significance with pancreatic cats, apparently it is not off the table, and fat is generally a consideration with IBD. Sigh. This is HARD.

Hi Donu have a recipe?

Instinct is under 5% or another brand?

they are all instinct on that link i believe. the ulti protein ones are the ones i recall looking at and some of the originals i think.

Hi Donu have a recipe?

-i buy this ground turkey
https://www.samsclub.com/sams/lean-ground-turkey-5-lbs/prod20302398.ip?xid=plp:product:1:1
-i bought this supplement which not sure what i am going to use when i run out cause it is discontinued and my cats wouldn't eat the beef liver version still available and other brands seem to be beef too.
http://mycatfoodstore.3dcartstores.com/TCfeline-PLUS--chicken-liver-720g--discontinued_p_39.html
-i buy this S&P and also its pumpkin version for an iccassional change
https://www.amazon.com/Farmers-Market-Organic-Potato-15-Ounce/dp/B000HDGIDS/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1521232912&sr=1-1&keywords=sweet potato can&dpID=51WGbOxBbFL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
-i buy this for extra taurine since i cook meat and cut down on tcfeline
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ENSLW5W/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20

-i pretty much followed this cooking instruction to cook 2.5lbs of meat at time; http://tcfeline.com/cooked-meat/. later i would make 5lbs in large slow cooker.
-i than use the cooled excess fluid to mix half the recommended tcfeline supplement (my cats did NOT like the taste when i used full amount). unlike in instruction, there will be fluids left when meat is done cooking enough, if you cook till there is none, the meat will be overcooked and yuck.. add mix to meat.
-i added 500mg of taurine per 2.5lbs to supplement mix before mixing with meat
-i than added on half the can of S&W or pure pumpkin..thats it, pretty simple.

you can add cooked rice in and so forth for non-diabetic cat or for when you need a bland diet for tummy issues.. i put mix in 4oz mason jars, food freezed best that way to me. each jar i think was 160 calories for the turkey mix and when i used 100% grass fed ground beef it was 230 calories. More calories if i decided to add eggs with tcfeline mix.

note: only use pumpkin if your cat is diabetic, sweet potato is higher in sugar.
i also now add half a box of Only Natural Pets bone broth to every 5lbs of meat but, i haven't figure out the added carbs for it. https://m.onlynaturalpet.com/produc...rade-Bone-Broth-Nutrition-Boost/999798.7.aspx

My vet suggested Natures Variety for canned food for my kitty with possible IBD. Our blood work is still out yet so not sure if he has pancreatitis but he does have a very sensitive stomach so possibly has IBD. I ordered Natures Variety Instinct- is that the stuff being recalled? I hope not!
I also use the Dr Elsey's dry food, clean protein, as Oliver loves his dry. So he eats both. We did just finish a dose of Metronizadole so I am waiting to see how things progress.
Sounds like its hard to find foods for a diabetic with IBD and pancreatitis-shoot. I may be in the same boat and will follow this thread.

there's no active recall, it just looks like they changed the recipes in some formulas from looking at the reviews on the ulti protein rabbit one. they added peas and carrots and changed the fish oil type. like most cats, the change isn't going over well based on the reviewers, you get same bad reviews often when formula are changed with other brands too just like the RC sensitive dry diet i feed one of my cats, formula was changed and has a lot of bad reviews cause cats no longer like it but, ours who never had the old formula has no issues with it.

Thanks for the info It sounds like a great choice
