My cat, Toby, is an 11yo neutered male cat who is newly diagnosed. I administered his first shot this morning of 1 unit of Vetsulin after a fasting BG reading of 314. After about 4 hours, his BG was 134.

However, I wasn't able to get a pre-shot glucose reading this evening for Toby. I stuck him twice and just wasn't able to get enough blood. He was getting very agitated, so I gave him a freeze-dried treat and let him go. Should I still administer a shot, provided he eats his wet food (he has not yet)? I don't like not knowing where he's at currently and I don't want to give him too much. Provided he eats something, should I give him a token shot of Vetsulin? Maybe half a unit or less?

If you are concerned I would do slightly less than 1. 0.5-0.75.

Try a thicker lancet or warm the ear first.

I'm going to get thicker lancets tonight for tomorrow morning. I think my problem will be getting him to eat in the evenings when I need to administer his second shot. He showed no interest in his food this evening, so I just don't know.

Gave him .25. Figured it would be better than nothing.

Hello... You can make a small sock filled with rice, tie it off & warm it in the microwave. Hold the warmed (not hot) sock to his ear, & massaging toward the tip is helpful too. They do begin to bleed easier as more capillaries will grow. Sometimes a little Parmesan cheese over top of the food perks up the appetite. I don’t know why they like stinky but mine does!

Becky - The sock filled with rice coupled with massaging seemed to do the trick today!

Janet - your video and suggestion of larger lancets has helped tremendously today! I wish Toby was as calm as your cat, but I follow your exact procedure and it works.
