? 5/17 Bronx's urinalysis: urine glucose high but BS isn't?

Hi all,

Just got off the phone with the vet who said Bronx's urine glucose was 3+ and RBC was high from his visit 2 days ago. I brought the urine sample in, so no needle was used to draw the urine. Why would he have a 3+ urine glucose when his blood sugar is under control? I am bringing him back in tomorrow to get urine drawn to do a culture. Reason I brought him in this week is that he stopped peeing in his box and is going on floor mats instead. All #s are inputted on his SS. Thanks!

That is odd! How did you collect the urine sample?

Do you have ketodiastix that you could test it at home, I doubt your meter is the problem, but you could rule it out quickly that way.

Hope he feels better soon. :bighug:

Because urine glucose isn't as exact.....the amount of glucose in the urine will be a "build up" of the glucose from the last time Bronx peed.

So (using 230 as an example of renal threshold), if he was at 300, 250, 100 at PS, +3 and +6 and hadn't peed for 6 hours, he could have spent over 3+ hours over renal threshold and have dumped glucose into his urine.

How are Bronx's 5 P's? Those are the things we can't see out of the bloodwork and his SS. Other than thinking out of the box when he pees.:rolleyes: My vet told me not to worry about one set of blood work, but more if it's a repeat thing. Low WBC could be a sign he's an older cat. Any recent trauma? Teeth OK on exam? He on any meds? Protein in urine is a common enough in acromegalic cats.

I would be remiss if I didn't comment on the amount of testing, or lack thereof. I see a number of preshot tests missed or very early, and cycles without second tests. The thing about cats who have SRT, changes can happen unexpectedly.
 
Thanks for checking out his SS Wendy. I try to test when he has an empty stomach & that's why those tests are done a few hours before shot time since he is always hungry :rolleyes:. 5 P's haven't been in place in a long time but he does have his happy moments, just few and far between. Noticed one front paw is pretty club footed now, friggin acromegaly sucks :(

So true. :mad::mad: Sorry he's not seeing as good a reaction to SRT as you hoped.

He is on bupe now? How often per day? The subq version is not supposed to be as effective as the sublingual. It was a game changer for Neko. Acupuncture also really helped.

I can't give anything to him sublingual, he's willing to break his neck to get away. I stopped the Bube since his constipation seemed to get worse on it, but I may try to start using it again. The Adequan has helped, he walks better now without the hunchback.
 
Hi Paul, I'm sorry that Bronx is having difficulties and sure hope that you will see some improvement soon. I know all about having to give meds by mouth! Rusty turns into a wildcat as soon as he sees something headed toward his mouth. Maybe the chicken compounded bupe will convince Bronx that it is something good to eat.

Thanks Ella. He went back to the vet today for a urine culture & should have results by Monday.
 
I wish I could be of more help, but the only things I really keyed on were that Bronx had blood in urine...last time we figured it was because of the cysto, but if you free-caught at home, there shouldn't be blood, unless it indicates some kind of UTI. Which may explain some of the inappropriate elimination? I'm glad you are getting a urine culture done. The calcium is getting up there, showing above normal range this time, not enough that you'd see symptoms, but it made me think it's something to keep an eye on. I don't know...with the Acro, I wonder if that plays a part? The pH of the urine was 6.5, so that's ok, I think crystals may start forming less than 6.0. And/or I think I remember seeing that hyper-T cats can have elevated calcium...here's where I read it...

Potassium is getting on the lower end, still in normal range, but I'd watch that too.

Just throwing out some ideas, maybe others might be able to tag on with their experience, and thoughts.

Thanks so much Christie, this is all new to me trying to evaluate the numbers that are out of range. I don't think hyperT is an issue, what else can high calcium mean? Stones?

Oh you're welcome, I wish I had more knowledge/experience...I just don't know...it's possible stones, my only experience with high calcium was easily explained.. it was with my late stage CRF kitty, but all her numbers were out of whack! Electrolytes and minerals, it was a mess. Luckily Bronx doesn't have those problems!

In the absence of my own experience, I found this older post by Marje talking about idiopathic hyperglycaemia...not sure if it may apply, but I'm just pulling out some info you can maybe ask your vet about?

Recently when my civvie Eve had a urinary problem I had to give bupe but she struggles so hard when I do anything to her that I had to just squirt it in the general direction of her mouth and hope most of it got in. I ended up mixing the bupe with tuna water and she licked it up - not ideal but after a dose she was definitely in and out of the litter box less often.
