just got call from vet blood work says tasha is diabetic they said come in monday and we caught it early they will start 2 shots a day and check in 2 weeks she is 11 years old about 11 pounds were free feeding some dry mostly wet fancy feast was told to start getting rid of dry food she eats when she wants so dont know when to do shots and havnt yet will be taught on monday guess ill learn alot then but deftly afraid of giving shot hope i can i know i have to
 
Take a deep breath! Everyone here has a diabetic cat. It is a shock, and not the news you wanted. However, you just found the best place to learn how to take care of your fur baby. Start by reading the yellow tagged into and stickies at the top of the forums. Make a signature and tell us about you and your kitty. Granted you don't know everything about treatment yet, but get started on feeding low carbohydrate wet food, 3-4 small meals a day. Most of us feed Fancy Feast classics pate and Friskies pates. Diet makes a difference. You can learn to home test blood glucose to keep your cat safe and inject insulin to help your cat live. Lots of info, a wonderful supportive community of people. We all experienced the fear, like you, and then got busy. You will too!:cat:

How do I do signature so I can tell about my cat.
 
You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to give shots. If Tasha does get squirmy while you’re trying to shoot, let us know and we can give you some pointers. Are you willing to learn to home test her? It’s really the best way to keep her safe and know how well the insulin is working. It’s someting you can start learning g about now so you’re ready come Monday. Here are some tips

Going to vets at 5 to learn the shooting method the videos I’ve seen were good and some what reassuring I hop this goes well I’m taking insulin with me for her first shot I want to be the one to do it if vet doesn’t mind I think they want to charge me guess I figure it out .they want us to inject her with saline for practice I guess that’s okay but I also want to give first shot while there hope for the best
 
I’m supposed to feed her first but how long before we go to vet? I’m worried she will get sick she don’t take car trips or vets well lots of crying
 
Glenn, are you home testing ? I learned to always test before injecting. It wasn't how we started, but Idjit's glucose levels dropped significantly when we got him off dry food. You need to know what is happening before you inject. You can get a meter, strips and lancets at Walmart, very reasonably. JanetNJ already replied to you, she has a video of how to test at end of her signature, and Sharon14 provided a link for home testing. Call your vet about feeding her.
 
Since you’re using Lantus, she probably doesn’t need to eat her whole meal before injection, but it’s a good idea to ask your vet and if she throws it up on the way, be sure to tell the vet. You can give her more when you get home. As Idjits mom said testing is important. Make sure your vet tests her first. Do you know what her dose will be? It shouldn’t be more than 1unit twice a day to start.
 
Well had first vet lesson yesterday using 1unit of lantus 2x day doing shot at vet was easy at home this morning not good my wife held her and when I inserted needle she jumped and it came out before I could inject but did it again and got it perhaps i hit something that she felt it used scruff of neck like vet did will try back flank today hope as we get used to it it gets better. How long before her hunger dies down it’s not severe but she eats all wet food we give that half can ff 2x day her origanal blood sugar was 373 does it take days or weeks for her symptoms to change? I’ve read so much online I’m confused also I can’t find lantus forum or message board thanks in advance

Glenn, there's no set timeline with appetite becoming more usual, ECID, every cat is different. It's going to take as long as it takes. For that to happen, her BG is going to have to become more normal. Come on over to the Lantus forum, ask questions so the experienced and knowledgeable can help you. It's like taking a new class, learning a new job, one step or one day at a time. Take a deep breath, you are learning to help Tasha and keep her safe.
