Good morning everyone,

It is a nice day here in Cleveland, I hope all of you get some nice weather as well.
+2 was a pretty significant drop so it looks like this will be a good day numbers wise for Shmee. He ate his entire bowl last night, and this morning he has eaten most of his can (usually eats the entire can by +4, I give another can at +5). But there is something that still strikes me as odd.. He was meowing at me next to his bowl, when there is already food in it... and being suuuper lovey. Like he wants food, but its already there.. Someone suggested yesterday maybe his stomach is a little upset by the AB. I am hoping this is the case and not something worse. He still has two more pills to go of the AB. It is getting a little less scary for me now, especially followed by the 1 mL oral syringe of water which gives me peace of mind.

Question - I give Shmee probiotics everyday from a suggestion on here (they said human probiotics are ok), to help while he is on antibiotics. I give it to him everyday with his +5 can of food (AB with the AMPS). I was thinking - I actually take probiotics already, so I don't know why I bought the cheap ones from Walmart. Mine are better quality so I think I am going to start giving him mine instead. Is there anything I should be looking out for on the ingredients that he should or should not have? Or any probiotics should be ok?

Vines who all that need them :bighug:

The more the better when it comes to probiotics for kitties due to their short digestive tract. You might want to read this page on probiotics. Although the article is about probiotics for IBD, it talks about probiotics for kitties in general. Fortiflora is not a great choice, it only has one strain of probiotic.

I hope Shmee feels better soon. Awesome seening green again. :DLooks like the dental is really helping his numbers.

Sounds good, I will give that website a read after work later tonight.
So this is interesting.... I just looked at both probiotics I have after your comment, and the cheap probiotic I bought from Walmart (that Shmee has been getting the last few days says) has five strains, and the one I just started him on today (mine, forgot I had it in my medicine cabinet) has three strains! So... my expensive probiotic has less strains than the cheap one from Walmart?! Oh man... now I have to re-evaluate my probiotic choice for myself! LOL. The reason I buy this brand (Thorne) for all my vitamins though is because I have read that their lab results show the most accurate readings, or they "are really what they say they are". So maybe mine are more expensive due to quality.... I am definitely looking into this later because now I am curious!

More strains isn't always better, it sounds better, but probiotics are live organisms and they multiply so even if you give 10 strains, one may be much more hardy and outpopulate the others. It's a winner take all situation. Probiotics are annoying to figure out, lots of marketing gimmicks and things, some work very well, many not so much. I use the ones Marje recommended for Asia because mine are Rx and crazy expensive, her vet did nutrition response testing on several and these came out on top. Asia has previously had GI distress on antibiotics and not so once I used the probiotics.

These ones when on antibiotics:

and the same brand, but the "everyday" 15 billion CFU for maintenance.

As far as things to stay away from, there are some that add non probiotic ingredients, like chicory root, which may or may not be safe for cats and has a laxative effect, which also is likely not something you want. :p
