Aurora OTJ Update - Civvie Question

HI Everyone!

Just wanted to drop in and say hello! Aurora continues to do really well OTJ - I only test 1x per week and last check she was at 77 AMBG on the weekend so I'm very happy. Not sure if I'm off my rocker or not but as you know, we have Aurora and we also have civvie Mulan. Aurora is 10 and Mulan is 3.5
Mulan is high energy and always wants to play. At night I call it the witching hour. Before bed, Mulan really gets wound up no matter how much we have played with her in the evening and tried to tucker her out and will chase Aurora in an attempt to play. Aurora has never liked this and will jump up high right away to get out of her way or she will run to the basement. I keep thinking perhaps I should get a 3rd cat, maybe a kitten for Mulan to have a play mate. I wonder if this would distract Mulan and keep her from bothering Aurora?
I have always wanted an all black, long hair cat. I figure I'd have to get a male - not sure if a 3rd female would be a good idea. Curious on what you all think. My husband said IF we were to do this, he'd want me to take Mulan to where the kitty is for a mini play date first. Not sure if such a thing even exists. Though, I'm sure Mulan would be different outside of the house than she is at home. At first I always thought she was just being jealous but maybe she's just trying to play and I'm interpreting it was fighting when it's really not.

I like your husband's idea of a play date first. Do it with both cats so you know all 3 can get along.

I don't know about the 2 females and introducing a male. As you know, I have all males. It may work out if there is an "alpha" in the house that is confident of her role. My oldest cat is the alpha and he made it known immediately he wouldn't take crap and he wouldn't allow crap between the others.

If you do get a kitty, you HAVE to post pictures on here!! ;)
 
I typically only have had 2 cats at a time and they have always been female. Both Mulan & Aurora are pretty chill and easy going. Sometimes I'm really not sure who is the alpha, Aurora has no problem slapping Mulan or throwing a punch here and there when Mulan invades her personal space but they eat side by side and don't have any issues. But, Mulan at times seems like the boss and Aurora will typically run away and retreat so does that make Mulan the alpha if Aurora runs away?
My thought was if I brought in a little baby kitty that might be easier to ease into the mix. I don't think Aurora will like a play date.....she just wants to be left alone. So @Mandy & Rex - you think adding a boy is a bad idea? I always thought too many females was a bad idea in the cat world?

I had a name picked out.....Oliver for a boy

I'm not saying that. The important thing is to see if the 3 personalities are compatible.

In my entire life, I had only 1 female cat and she took a long time to warm up to the male kitten we brought into our home. She was 10 years old and it took a few months and her realizing that the other cat just wanted to be friends. They bonded after that. So I haven't had the experience of having 2 females, let alone 3 females or 2 females and 1 male.
 
I'm worried about a boy kitty, I have read on so many other cat groups about spraying and getting crystals and stuff. My 1st ever cat though when I was little was a boy and he was excellent, never sprayed and he was super sweet and lovey and wanted tummy rubs like crazy.

My 4 boys have never had crystals. Rex did have some inappropriate peeing before and after he was dx'ed with diabetes so one other cat was marking the same area, but we stopped that right away. I wouldn't worry about it too much. :)
 
Great aurora update.

We now have 3 cats. 2boys and one girl.

Our boys never scent mark and never had problems with crystals (feeding a wet diet helps prevent problems read Dr Lisa recommendation for this, she believes dry food and chronic dehydration to be the major culprit Catinfo.org )
If you get them neutered they will most likely not spray.

We got Fred last summer, he was only 5 weeks old, George accepted him. It soon became apparent that he was going to be high energy, George is the polar opposite, fred kept bothering him wanting to play, and george was not impressed I felt it was going to escalate and end in tears. Fred also does what you call the witching hour thing at night.

A kitty at a shelter was looking for a home, we didn't do a play date, but ew initially fostered her with the understanding that she would have to go back if it was a disaster. For Fred it was love at first sight, he's pretty friendly towards other cats, she was a bit overwhelmed at first. It took a good few weeks before we were happy to formally adopt her.

Fred and Iris are best friends, they get along with George, but mostly just leave him in peace, though he occasionally joins in with the play, it's on his terms, he's the alpha of the house.

Perhaps asking if you can foster with a view to adopting would be a way of making sure they all get along in the home.
 
@gillandgeorge that's a great idea! I'll have to look into something like that. Something just keeps saying to me that another one would keep Mulan busy and give Aurora some peace and quiet. I'm certainly not opposed to 3rd girl at all - maybe I'm not up to speed on multiple cats in a house, I always had thought too many female cats turns into a problem with fighting.
 
it's been a while since I had 3 females in the house. Shadow was the youngest when I did. And when she came in, she pretty quickly became alpha over the other two. It's a personality thing and can become pretty obvious when you have a cat determined to be top dog.

Then after she was gone and she was the only cat for a few years.

I adopted one with my son ( his cat Amale) and then a second ( Maia) and then another, ( a tortie who wanted to be an only cat) and then Phantom ( my first male) and finally Keora. ( a very small female)
The tortie did not work out as she was not happy with so many others and she started peeing on the bed. I had to take her back to the shelter.
My son finally moved and took Amale and Maia with him. It turned out that Maia became dominate in their new home.
but when all 5 were here for a while, it was Phantom ( male) who was determined to be alpha.... and we thought at the time that
it was Amale who was number two.... with Maia challenging but Phantom would always jump on her back and cause her to shriek.

and poor little Keora , would get picked on by everyone but then Phantom would protect her, play gently with her. We think it's because they are both tuxedo's.

So, truly, you're only going to know by trying....
fostering is probably a good idea.....

now that I just have Phantom and Keora, she gives him hell. He's squawks at her jumping on him.
