Hi! I had posted many months ago about my Mo being diagnosed with diabetes which was a shock. I got some wonderful advice and support on here and could not get back cause I work constantly as I wanted to so bad so I lost touch”(. I was so overwhelmed with the kindness and how smart everyone was, very good tips I did do. Not sure if anyone remembers I thought it was that Himalayian salt lamp I got when he wouldn’t leave it alone and then got deathly ill within days. I was told he had diabetes when I rushed him to the vet which he was never sick ever a day in his life til I got that lamp and was throwing up the color of it Amber and bright yellow and looked like he was dying, lethargic ughh a mess. Well as much as he has been on insulin he seems worse when he takes it and had even overdosed one night and had to take him to the emergency vet. I was ready to put him down a few times. He only got better when Id stop the insulin. Of course not for long. Neorapathy has set in and
urinating in the bed and just a mess. I don’t know what to do. I think he might have bad kidneys? Would that cause neuropathy?? I still think that lamp had something to do with it. Anyway I go to a friend’s vet and she knows the whole story and put him on a different insulin!! He was on prozinc and now Lantus. Without even any blood work?! I hadn’t given him any in months cause I did atleast 10 curves and 15 visits and he always seemed sicker and it seemed like bs to me.. The best he’s been is when I stopped the insulin. Now I tried this new stuff and omg he looked like death right after then she gave me gabapentin for pain which he was so mad he’s been hiding under the bed. I don’t want him to suffer or hate me for shoving this medicine in his mouth. He’s not living any kind of life but should I put him down?? He purrs and lays with me but not very often , took him 2 times to put him to sleep and he acts all chipper there and they love him! His a big lover and this vet talked me out of it. I’ve had him 13 years and he IS my life but I do not know what to do. I put him on all wet food then started giving him a little dry, maybe I shouldn’t have . He was good for a few months. I do know I do not like the vets I have been dealing with. I had one ( a great vet for 15 years)that would tell me right away “Melanie, Chester is really old and he’s lost lots of weight he’s probably going through kidney failure which is very common in older cats” and suggested I put him down. I need that! He moved away of course I need someone to b straight with me. Sorry I’m rambling but I did this with my poor yellow lab too who was my life. Let her go on longer than I should. Any suggestions?
 
Oh how heartbreaking! Mel I honestly believe “you” and only you will know when that horrible time is. I had a friend here at the hospital tell me that about my Nikita, who I lost a month or so (?) ago. You just know.

I did the same thing with my chocolate lab. And my Nikita. (Nikita suffered IBD and god knows what else toward the end), But she would still hang on my lap and purr. The vet, I think, was fairly shocked at her condition and didn’t seem to want to take me on with Gretchen’s diabetes. It was until that last day. All she did was sleep in my lap, no eating, I don’t think she could purr anymore. I knew. The vet said she would have put her down weeks and weeks ago... but she didn’t know, she wasn’t there and she didn’t share in our bond. Nikita was absolutely skeletal and had fur gnats all over her. I had quit cutting them off as she bled and it hurt her. Poor baby- I’m ashamed at how bad she appeared, but she still purred and ate until that last day.

I honestly think you will know. Don’t let anyone persuade you either way, let Mo “tell” you.

How heartbreaking. I’m so sorry, I wish I had some magical words I give give you to make this better.
 
I may have gotten kitties mixed up. It’s Mo, right?
About the dry food- I couldn’t afford it but I ordered the Young Again Zero. I guess it not really zero carbs, but super low. And 3 cats really aren’t going through it very fast. Folks here told me it lasts longer and it is. I couldn’t go straight canned. They’ve always had free feed plus I have 2 other non diabetics.

That means alot, thank you so much and I’m tearing up thinking about you and your babies. Yeah, I literally said goodbye and thought I was all cried out and then decided against it that day. Then spent another $400 for stuff I only gave him one day. I wish I could do something but I don’t see him coming back from his neuropathy and incontinence
 
I’m leaving from work and will be driving but have you tried the B12? It has worked wonders for some. I’ll look it up for you...

Zobaline. Since you’re hating giving meds, I understand!, you can get B12 in drops. You would just have to figure out the dosing and make sure it’s methocolybin...I’ll look that spelling up when I get home lol. I’m so far off my phone couldn’t correct it.

Yes It’s Mo, short for Motor. Yeah I had this expensive dry food from the vet , Purina maybe prescription and then someone on here said to get him off and that’s when he started doing better. I’m confused about how to keep up and write on the site lol I think that’s why I stopped. Everyone has a little profile but I didn’t know what to write about him or how to reply on a different thread? Ughh . Sometimes I think I’m losing it! I just took care of my mom with Alzheimer’s and I swear I’m getting it! I can’t do the littlest things and I’m so stressed with all my animals, anyway .I guess I kept seeing people saying to start testing at home with a gc meter? I’m a horrible mom but I work like 12 hr days and live alone and thought is this really gonna help and can I do it? If so I would!

K just drive and be careful. And yes I was just looking at that, I wanted to donate to this site and they said amazon would do a donation so I looked up meds for neuropathy and they mentioned that! I could get it online but yeah don’t know what dose and I can’t bear another vet. What about hemp oil? I don’t know I was just reading about that to keep him comfortable but someone actually said that b12 helped her cat start walking better and everything. I’ll be here. Thanks for your time I really appreciate it. They did give him a b12 shot that day too. I’ll be here.

It all seems to have got into a bit of a muddle & very overwhelming. If we can all unravel it a bit , you may be able to help Motor feel better, regardless of how poorly he seems now.

Let's take it all a step at a time. We will all write in here and you will reply. Later on , when you feel able you can branch out . Best way to get used to a forum like this is to just click everywhere , lose your way, get back to the beginning and do it again. It is a bit like a road map. All of a sudden you know your way around.

Neuropathy:

As you can read my old Tyler is almost 20. He had quite bad neuropathy which broke my heart to watch. I started to give him B12 methylcobalamin . Two 1000mg tablets twice a day which I crushed up and put in his food. He does not notice anything.

Neuropathy comes from either diabetes or kidney issues or both. Tyler , my cat, has both.

You can buy Zobaline and give that to Motor. It will not cure overnight but soon he will be far better.
 
Food:

Food can effect how he feels especially if he is diabetic and has kidney issues. Just like us really.

Wet is the way to go BUT any food eaten is better than no food eaten.
Low carb for a diabetic if possible. Low phos for a cat with kidney issues.

Do you know what stage of kidney disease Motor has please? Tyler is stage II

Wow! Thank you thank Thank you to all of that. I love this site. I will get them right away! Online I hope and will start there.That dosage is good for him you think? He’s about 15 lbs now he was 24! His spirit and personality are still awesome it’s his body that’s giving out. I will do whatever you guys tell me and I will do the best I can on this site too. Thanks again for the encouragement from all of you. It means more than you know!

Diabetes.

Was he diagnosed as diabetic please? If he was then he should be on insulin otherwise the diabetes could kill him.
That is regardless of whether he seems happy or well HOWEVER if he is not eating then it would depend what his blood glucose reading was as to whether he could have insulin or not.

You mention curves and testing. The best help for a diabetic cat is to test the blood glucose level at home. It helps you to know what insulin your cat needs to help him become healthier and better.

Yes. The cat might seem less well to start with but you have to remember that their body has become used to the very thing that could kill them - the diabetes.

You can ask the vet that tested the kidney function. They can tell you. There are several stages. Many many older cats have some form of kidney disease & you wouldn't even know it until the test.

I took Tyler for an elderly cat general medical checkup . He was 18 at the time and fully fit and able. I had a shock to know he had kidney disease. There were no symptoms.

The vet that tested for this can tell you. You paid for the tests , they are yours to own.

I don’t know anything but I do know he was never ever sick ever before I brought that home.

Yes. I think this too. Lanctus is a really good insulin for cats and for the people that have to give it. Also a LOT of people here use it. I do for my old Tyler. You do too so we can help.

Ok then ,so then it tells me... what?? Sorry . I had so much on my plate. If he needs insulin and how much to give him is decided on the number. Yikes this is going to be a challlenge. But I have to do everything I can
 
Working a horrible lot of hours and home testing.

I don't walk in your shoes and I would never ever say to you or anyone ' heck, it is OK, you will do this ' as to start with it will be scary and will take time to sort out your routine .
It will be tough as often new things like this are tough. Mate! I have cried over my Tylers ears more than once.

There are people here that work your horrible long hours and also have to travel. They do manage to test once or twice a day and give the insulin shots twice a day.

Be prepared to shed tears of frustration but know that those tears will be helping Motor.
 
I believe that too it started with like .3 then went all the way up to 7 when I stopped and had a horrible od. They kept upping it! This new vet didn’t even test and started him on . 3. So I guess first thing is the meter. I will get tomorrow. Same for humans? Lol idk

Aww thank you and you really don’t know how much that means. I literally have no one that understands or thinks I should be going this far but hey he’s not their family! He’s my everything. I will do whatever it takes.Ive read a lot of good things about your kitties so there must be hope!

Yes. A meter . Some test strips and a big box of tissues for your eyes.
Also maybe some treats for him for the time being ( those are bad bad for diabetes) and treats for you

I use a human meter. Most everyone here does.
I am in New Zealand so am not sure which meters are easy to get hold of where you are.

I gather Walmart may be a place to go. We don't have Walmart. Heck we hardly got shops.

Yes, a human meter will work fine. A lot of us use the Walmart Relion meters. They are affordable and reliable. The Prime is the cheapest, but the Confirm uses a smaller amount of blood per test.

Wow lol New Zealand! That’s awesome people from all over. I will take everything you said and hope for the best. Fingers crossed!! Ok I have to sleep and get up early. I will check in tomorrow. Thank you so much again!

I will go to the original vet and get all the tests we did in the beginning. I’m very curious. Just kinda gave up on them and quit going but they have records for sure

We get it. Me and Ty and everyone here. We all get it.

OK. It is 7.30pm here in New Zealand

Come back to here as you know where this is. I will set alerts for here. Other will come by and help you too. One small easy step at a time. Too much info all at once is like a tidal wave. Too hard.

Yes. Get copies of the tests. For now just write what you see in here. We will figure it out.

Later on when you are more comfy here , then you can add the bits and bobs we all have.

I got home to a mouse in my house and a Houdini horse out!! Haven’t dealt with the horse yet as Gretchen is doing her “push my food around thing” and the mouse got away. Grr!!
Keep coming back here...the people here will help you so much and I am so glad they all chimed in here...I am new to this and still struggling with my insulin type.

I am alone with 3 horses, 3 cats and two dogs and I still work full time so even if I have no intelligent words I do have open ears and a soft shoulder :)
 
You do @Gretchen(sugarbaby)&bobbi . You do and it is what we all need.

I had a mouse in the house yesterday. Dusty brought it in and out - and in - and out - and in - and out. Tyler just found somewhere peaceful.

I don't know so much either. I do know the basic s and I do know that keeping it simple and in small bites is best to start with. Otherwise it is just too huge .

You also have a :bighug: I have a husband :blackeye: Two cats. A drake and 4 Bourkes parakeets. All of which need watching & a firm hand.
 
I want to address the gabapentin. Olive was on it for weeks. I used the tablets (had to cut into 4 pieces). They crumble easily and I mixed in her food. I was to give when needed for discomfort. Then the IM during ultrasound said to give 3 times a day because she was definitely uncomfortable. It made a big difference. Kept her on it every 8 hrs foe weeks. Then she didn't seem to need it as much and gave every 12 hrs. That remained for weeks. Then once a day for weeks. And now she is off it. I read you do have to taper off and not stop it abruptly. You might want to try it again.

Yes home testing will give you the control to help your kitty feel better. It will take time so it best to start right away.

I had a Houdini horse! She spent years finding her way out of everything meant to contain her, lol. One time I got a call at 3:00 AM from the local small airfield, which was several miles away, asking me to please come remove my horses from the grass landing strip, where they were happily grazing - not only had she let herself out, but she'd taken all the others with her. Another time I got a call at work from a neighbor who had spied her and her foal trotting down the side of the road a few miles from my farm. She was quite the character, and probably the best horse I ever owned! ❤️ She lived well into her 30s.

this was my Arab..she’s usually good. My Houdini is my little quarab lol! I have an inside pen that the grass is super long in. She keeps squeezing through. And she’s overweight, I just got some of it off her :banghead:
Not my property so I twined it right with baling twine :joyful::joyful: I may have to pick up some panels

Sorry to further hijack the post but had to chime in about these goofy arabs! My Naziim just turned 21 this month...everyone at the barn calls him Na-Zoom because of his crazy energy levels and him wanting to zoom around everywhere. Nice to meet some fellow horse lovers!

Mel- good luck with Mo! I hope you are able to get him feeling better soon! :cat:
 
Well I’m discouraged. I made an appointment at a different vet for Friday morning. Going to get bloodwork. My bed is soaked in pee constantly. I’ve been sleeping on the couch , tired of scrubbing my mattress. He comes to me when I get home and meows and eats good his body is just a messIf I get that B12 will it make a difference? I’ tried the gabapentin again tonight that didn’t go well. He’s so awesome though last night when I slept on the couch I woke up and he was laying next to me on the floor staring at me. This sucks! I’m sad I will wait to see what the bloodwork says then I’ll go from there I guess. Thank you all. Also where do I get that b12? Z something? Nite, I appreciate all of you! You’re awesome
 
Oh gosh please try to hang in there until you can get a decent vet...and definitely keep coming here!!! I swear the people on this board are more knowlegable than most vets. I think that was such a horrible mis spell my phone can’t even catch it lol. I’m tired...at hospital on call all night, 2 hour nap and here I am back. Ugh.

Zobaline. Zobaline is B12 and you can get that in drops also but you have to make sure it’s form is Methylcobalamin. Other forms are not absorbed! Then if you go with drops dosage needs to be figured out.

I know the pee is annoying and overwhelming at times. Years and years ago I had a female that lived 22 years and the last few was peeing mess. Nikita, one I just lost was IBD and it was smelly diarreah. At least Nikita only hit hard wood floor and kitchen floor (eeew, but...) I should own stock in bleach. You may have to close him out of bedroom- my little rescue dog love is closed out of mine when I’m not home for that very reason. She thought it cool and awesome to pee on my bed when I left.

Can you say what you did for Miss Asia peepee pants please. I mean by way of keeping you , your soft furnishing & Asia reasonably dry.
Not her UTI but controlling the pee situation itself.

@Mel & Mo . It'll come right. It just feels a bit tough at the start.

With the pee, is he just doing this on your bed? Or is he missing his tray / litter box? Is he doing this elsewhere in the home?
Once a certain spot gets The Smell it can add to the attraction of using that spot again. Tyler's has been behind the log burner but I don't sleep there as I'm not a log.

Getting the diabetes under control will help with the pee. Same with the neuropathy . It will take a bit of time though. I can still find 3 trays pee filled overnight or a puddle on the floor/carpet & it is not the husband sleep walking.
