I came across this perusing human diabetic sites. I don’t have it or have personal experience with it, but when I run out of my 500 strip stock, I intend to check it out. They offer different subscription plans as well as a $10 trial. If you opt for the monthly unlimited strip plan, you pay $45 usd for however many strips you use in a month. :woot:

They send a Bluetooth enabled glucose meter, lancing device, case and strips. I think the caveat with unlimited strips is that you must upload the readings via Bluetooth to their app to prove you are using them vs. selling them to someone else. I don’t know how they’d do if you said this was for a cat, but given how that works with insulin discounts and such, I’d lean towards leaving that bit out. ;)

The meter is highly rated and right up there with the Walmart/Arkray one.

Interesting! Of course we in Canada get stung by the exchange but right now I'm paying about $75 for 100 strips which lasts 15-20 days and then the lancets are on top of that.
 
I get the lancets for free with the strips. I get box of 100 strips for around $50 bucks, sometimes they have them for $10 off a box. Your right though, the exchange right now is about 1.3 right now. But 45 a month x 1.3 = 58.50....so that is unlimited strips...hmmmm
 
$45...or even $58 a month would be a significant savings for me. I’m embarrassed to admit my monthly strip budget, but it should be obvious by my SS. :oops:

Do they say they will ship to Canada? That would be amazing if they did! :woot: You guys have it brutal on the strip prices.

I do have trouble with Floyd's ear sometimes, but I find that if I rotate between paws and ears (L ear one day, then R ear, then paws for 2 days) I get better samples.

So I just counted, and in the last month I've tested at least 275 times (lost count actually)!! :eek: And that's not including retesting wonky numbers and errors.

This would be a great deal, even considering the price of strips I've been getting on eBay.

Canadian users...........if you are near the USA border or can go online and order (not sure if they ship here) but WALMART USA sells Reli-on meters, lancets and test strips for dirt cheap compared to here in Canada.

Meter - U$12
Test Strips - 100 for U$17.88
Lancets - box of 200 for about U$2.25

I'm sure they ship here, no prescription needed and you pay HST any way (or GST/PST) on purchases. Even with the exchange rate it's still much cheaper.

You have to sync to a Fitbit? Where did you read that? The meter itself is Bluetooth enabled, I thought you just had to sync the meter with the app? No?

That is so very cool they ship to Canada! Woohoo!

ETA: Yes, Tracey! You could see the numbers, on the app anyway. Useful feature for me!
 
Interesting. You'll have to let us know if you do it and how it works out. I test at 6 six times a day unless he is diving and I figure I am only spending around 38 /mo for strips and the lancets are super cheap .
 
It sounds wonderful! One bit does concern me, though, this, from a user review, "...There is even someone who chats with you and checks up on you.“ Might be difficult, in that case, to avoid the issue that it's for a cat, not a human.

Is that for Relion Confirm strips? What Walmart do you shop at??? I want to shop there! At my Walmart, 900 strips would cost me $325.00! I just bought 1100 strips plus 600 lancets for $170.00 on eBay, killed my monthly budget but so worth it, in savings!
 
No, Reli-on PRIME strips..........in case you missed it - it's in Walmart USA.........I go to Buffalo to get them and they are at different stores I've shopped at. I paid U$17.88 for 100 test strips which came in a box with 2 x 50 packs

Oh, okay. :) Darn, I was hopeful someone had found a place to get the Confirm strips cheaply! :(

Relion prime is .5 µg blood drop size (slightly larger than the smallest .3 µg many of us use, like relion confirm).

Prime strips are $9/50 and confirm $20/50

Shawna, do you/did you have any issue getting the blood drop size?
 
Stacy.......I'm not sure what you mean by blood drop size? I use ultra thin lancets 30 gauge and the Reli-on Prime test strips and there is more then enough blood to get tests. When the test strip is defective and I don't get a reading, which does happen, I just squish out more blood........never had any problems with the meter or test strips and hope that answers your question........

Heh. I was thinking, "you know, I bet this is all about data-collection for someone, and that's why it's cheap" (nothing for free!). They probably won't know what to do with some of our kitties' numbers, especially the really bouncy ones!

They would scream at anything below 60, they don’t like to see that in humans, and the acro cats would be heart stopping, some of their doses are extreme, even for an average sized human (any sized human). :joyful: I think it’s a great idea, they are filling a void for people who don’t have or insurance won’t cover all of their supplies. It seems like a young company, as in young people. I’m sure they are data collecting, hopefully for something useful. They may see a trend that people who test more often have a lower A1c.

I am going to assume if the it is blue tooth that they can track it as well. Just like the fit bit...your phone app has the data, online account has the data...therefore FitBit has the data.


Do strips require a prescription? Did think it was required in the US.

You do not need a prescription for testing supplies in the USA. You do for many insulins. Some states require a prescription for syringes, some don’t.

Off topic a bit . . . but my friend who is a T2 diabetic. She has a meter she wears. It takes her BG all the time without a finger prick. Pretty neat if you ask me. If only something like that available for our fur babies!

There have been some instances of continuous glucose monitors used in cats. They aren’t terribly reliable from what I understand and only last for under 14 days before needing to be replaced. I’ve seen it used on 3 cats here, if I’m not mistaken, all 3 of them were from Australia. @Girlie's mom had it for a time. As the technology improves and usually that means getting smaller as well, I think it may be a great option in the future, now, not so much (IMO).

The Freestyle Libre. It would be so, so wonderful if it worked, but not for cats, in my experience.. Here's what I wrote up about it in the Think Tank: I wouldn't recommend it, to be honest: a waste of time and money from my own experience. I wrote it up in a post on the Think Tank, but I'll summarise it here as well:
Girlie had the Freestyle Libre implant here in Australia shortly after she was diagnosed and before I'd ever done a manual BG test. I'm now a dedicated manual tester and wouldn't use or recommend the Freestyle Libre, but this is based on just my experience. Here's my take, just fyi and the reasons why I'm not a fan:

HI/LO: If BG goes over 25 (U.S. 450), the Freestyle Libre meter just says HI, and if it goes under 2.8 (U.S. 50), it just says LO. That makes it challenging to know just how high or how low the BG levels are.

Girlie had it implanted (stuck on) on/in 4 July, but it started to break down and give lots of error messages by 12 July, so it didn't even last the two weeks, even though Girlie ignored it and did nothing to jar it at all. The vet didn't expect it to give accurate readings for two weeks anyway. A cat's body is quite different from a human's, so it doesn't necessarily attach as strongly or as well as it would on a human arm.

My vet would only use it for one two-week stretch at a time, so we couldn't have kept her on it indefinitely the way humans do.

If anyone does try it out (and I understand the attraction of being able to swipe rather than poke!), I'd make sure to also have test strips ready to double check readings if they look odd or if the sensor seems to be dying early. My vet was pretty emphatic about that, and especially about testing if I got low readings.

If you do get it implanted, ask your vet what they're going to use to stick the sensor to the outside of her skin. My vet used some kind of glue, and when they removed the meter, some of the top layer of her skin came off, and the glue had to grow out to fall off. It was a bit icky, to be honest. If I decided to use it again (which I wouldn't), then I'd ask the vet about using something like the patches below to stick it to her skin instead, but they might not work because of the fur: Freestyle Libre Patch 1 and Freestyle Libre Patch 2

Anxious to know how this turns out for anyone trying it! I spend a small fortune on strips! I do live only an hour from the border however it's not easy to get away because of "the cat that shall not be named".
 
Yes it does..short needle.. I did not realize it but it makes sense..to measure the interstitial fluid glucose..I do not see any mention in videos of the difference between human and pet results? I was wondering how the disk stays in place (even with the glue) if your pet has really loose skin ..probably not an issue...
