Is anyone familiar with acid reflux in cats, I know this isn’t a diabetic question but Bella’s brother Sammie eats a little and throws up more than a usual cat does, it’s sometimes the food he just ate or sometimes it’s just clear, he always goes to cat box first for some reason and then gets out and pukes, has quite a few hairball pukes, does this sound like gerd

Thanks @Sean & Rufus
Do u give anytime during day, before meals, after meals
I usually give it about an hour after he eats in the morning. That's just because when the time works out. Not quite sure if they are supposed to have with a meal or not. Doesn't seem to effect him if I give it with or without a meal. And yeah 5mg is a big dose. Try 2.5mg.

Usually this happens on an empty stomach... but not always. You could try 1/4 regular Pepcid, not the complete kind, 10 mg. If it helps then you got it. I see Sean said 1/2 tab but his kit is pretty big. How much does Sammie weigh? If around 10 lbs, I’d do a quarter.
I did quarter

oh gosh I gave Pepcid ac, is he gonna be ok??

I talked to BunBun's oncologist today about why she was prescribing OTC omeprazole (one trade name Prilosec). She said she was prescribing it because mast-cell tumors can release histamines which can cause stomach ulcers to to the histamines cause acid production. I asked two questions: I thought an antihistamine like Benadryl would be used but she said the Benadryl only is for H1 histamines but mast-cell tumors do not release H1. I then asked why not give Pepcid AC (famotidine) wa not given. She said that recent testing has shown that famotidine and other acid reduces like Ranidine or cimetidine do not really reduce acid in cat (maybe dog too but I wss not interested in that). The cat dose is 1/4 of 20 mg tablet/caplet. The human med is enteric coated and is once a day in humans but the coating is breached when the pill is divided.

I notice that with Rufus the pepcid does seem to work. I did read though over time it can have a reverse effect where it will make things worse though. I'm going to ask my IM about switching to a different one.

So basically she said the Pepcid does not work in cats? Also it’s best not to break the enteric coating?!? Hmmm what then helps... Prilosec otc ...what milligram is needed for an 8 lb cat? Better call my vet, no sense giving her Pepcid if it’s not working!

This is interesting about the Pepcid- I'm wondering if it only refers to mast cell tumor responses or Pepcid being used for all acidy conditions in cats-? My Leo had a mast cell tumor removed from his ear by his regular vet. The pathology report said it looked benign but Leo's specialist recommended a consult by an oncologist just in case. I'll have to ask about this regarding Pepcid not being effective for acid problems in cats. Must be something new.

The long term of Famotidine, I believe it is called Pepcid AC also, might be problematic.
It suppresses levels of a certain acid in the body which is necessary for proper functioning of (memory serves) of an intestinal valve opening mechanism.
Unfortunately I do not recall the exact explanation given nor I could I find that old condo where it was discussed in detailed in lay man English but I believe that this info was posted by @manxcat419 . (My apologies if tagged the wrong person. )

Im very glad you told me that, I going to switch to slippery elm soon, Bella’s brother is the one who throws up some, it’s weird he goes to the cat box tries to poop then gets out and pukes

Oh, I 've heard it quiet a lot here - many constipating kitties would do the same - straining to poop, nothing comes out and they puke, instead.

How is LB things with Bella?
Is he regular, do you think?

Yeah, I did some reading on IBDkitties, and it seems that cat should really be on short term only. After a while, it can cause havoc with natural PH babalnce of tummy and cause more issues :(

Ok I’m kinda:confused: what is LB, yeah Bella has no problems with pooping

Sammie is Bella’s brother who I give the Pepcid and miralax to, he’s the one who tries to poop then pukes

Ok @Bellasmom - just wanted to make sure you knew that... mine have always had more run problems I guess! 1/8 tsp miralax... I better write that down. How is slippery elm working btw? If I leave food out at night... freeze 2 hrs., then put it out at bed time... we don’t have any puke issues! So I don’t give it or anything regularly. Well d-mannose when I remember?!?
I thought no Baby has some IBD because the least little change sends her running to the lb!

Yes, well haven’t got the slippery elm yet, short on funds this week, taxes are due omg

Wonder if Sammie has IBS
Oh, I see, I misread..sorry.
Well, is Sammie constipated?
Miralax should help but it take a while I believe and I know that the water intake is recommended to go up while using Miralax. Does Sammie drinks from a bowl or do you add water to his meals? It might be good idea for him to get a little extra water.
Cat's LB habits are one of the most important well being indicators - if something isn't well and does not improves I'd talk to a vet. But again - Miralax might take a little while to start helping.
Have you tried pumpkin?
I have no experience with IBS...

Sammie does the thing of going to LB and then puking about every other day so every other day I give miralax and yes he drinks a lot and I always always add extra water to everyone’s food

I was just reading about IBS and it says give probiotics or prebiotics, that is helps
many on here give human grade priobiotic just as preventive maintenance - I''ll try to find the link for the product that's been recommended, give me a moment pls.
But I'd rather get the IBS Dx confirmed by a vet first...

But was thee actual bowel mov (BM) or he hasn't relieve himself in a couple of dais? If yes, I would call a vet and ask what can be done at home before bringing him in.
I hope Miralax will help.

Runny, I have given him an enema before, a cat enema and I just don’t get it, he eats good food and gets plenty of water

I cannot locate that link, sorry, I'll try more later. I was sure I bookmarked it.

I think that @Bobbie And Bubba used SEB as well as Egg Yolk Powder to treat nausea while constipated. Is that right, Bobbie?
Perhaps you can point us to the right direction about which of the human grade probiotics help?

Here is some good general info on cats and probiotics:

I have had good success with Florastor , it is a S. Bouladii strain. When Bubba had diarrhea, I gave him 1/2 capsules twice a day . When the diarrhea stopped I went to a maintenance dose of 1/4 capsule for 3-4 days.

For nausea, I mixed SEB , a 1/4 tsp with 1/2 tsp of George's Aloe Vera Juice. It has to be fractionally distilled which is why I use George's brand. Most health food stores would carry. Now I order from Amazon as it's cheaper. Mix the two together and form a little ball betwween your fingers that you can pop onto the roof of his mouth about 1/2 hour before feeding time to help with nausea.

I use SEB daily at a maintenance dose of 1/4 tsp twice a day. I use the above proportions but then thin it out to a syrupy consistency with hot water and add to the food .

Also, I use Egg Yolk Powder twice a day too for gut motility and to stop hairballs.

ETA Some here use Renew Life brand probiotics.

Thanks for all the good info! Baby has bouts of diahpoo- here lately due to a new food... even when slowly added... I get worried about pancreatitis. She often eats less at these times & I don’t know if it’s the different taste or it’s hurting her?. If only they could speak... I have so much to talk to her about! Lol
I do add some pumpkin during these times... helps some.

Cat was formerly prescribed Pepcid every day, 2x. Just last week, my internist said the most recent literature shows that Pepcid only "works" for two weeks, then loses effectiveness. Was prescribed to Stub for pancreatitis, overproduction of acid. Hope this is helpful.

Yes, I was at my IM yesterday, and she says new studies show that it might not ever help. I sure think it helped Rufus. We did take him off of it now.

@Tanya and Ducia - sorry to reply so late. For some reason I only get notifications in my email around half the time at the moment. It might have been me - I really can't remember as I tend to look at a lot of cat health-related stuff every day. I do know there are some concerns with long-term use. It is known to become less effective with continued use - very definitely in dogs and humans, but probably also in cats. Omeprazole (also not without its issues) tends to be more effective in cats too. The other major concern is that studies in humans have shown that long-term use of famotidine may actually be a causative factor in the development of CKD...yet many CKD cats are prescribed it for daily use. There are also potential concerns with any form of long-term acid suppression that you may see overgrowth of intestinal flora. I don't recall the exact conversation, but I was able to find something relating to the disorder you mention on the Catcentric website so it may be that it was one of the owners of that site who posted about it. It's not something I'm directly aware of (or if I was, I don't remember it), but there are sufficient concerns with long-term use of any antacid to make dosing at the smallest and least frequent effective dose desirable. Some cats can do well with every other day dosing of famotidine instead of every day for instance, and that's definitely something that's worth experimenting with.
