MAGGOT THE CAT

Member Since 2018
Sorry to be a nuisance again , we took Maggot back to the vets 2 weeks after being diagnosed vet asked how he was , i said he was only on wet food , told her he had stopped drinking water , he was alot more active and alot happier , she tested him and said his sugar levels were still high but seeing as he was happy etc she would leave it another 4 weeks and test him again ,and see if we will have to start injections , which will be on April 21 , Maggot always seems hungry , so i feed him 2 pouches in the morning , and 2 pouches 12 hours later , with the odd pouch in between in the daytime , so am i over feeding him ?

Usually feed 20 calories per pound, but if kitty is unregulated they are usually feed more as they dont absorb and process food as well.

I dont think that’s to much, those pouches don’t have as much as can, my cat eats freeze dried raw and they come in big chunks, he’s gets 2 am, 2 mid day and 2 a dinner plus he has his Stella and chewys nuggets or ziwi air dried treats when I check his BG. Bella eats a lot and always has, he’s a big cat at almost 17lbs. He is a Ragdoll and the males are usually big. How much does your cat weigh?

Yup, there's a formula foe it, but it comes pretty close to 20 calories a day to maintain. I was just reading on IBDkitties to not go below 15 calories a day if kitty is on a diet.

Well the vet told me to just feed Royal Canin diabetic , which he isnt exactly fond of and ive read alot peeps say its not that good , so i feed him 2 pouches of RC and 3 pouches of Sheba fine flakes

I dont see the calories listed for the Sheba. It does say to feed a 4 kg cat 3 pouches per day. Maggot would be 5.5 kg, right? So 4 pouches should be good. Is he maintinaing weight?

Only thing that concerns me is it looks likr the Sheba in in jelly or gravy? Usually those are higher in carbs.

Oh, you are feeding 2 100g pouches and 3 85g pouches a day? That seems like a lot. But if he's not gaining weight, and is un-regulated then it's probably ok.

So theoretically the 3 sheba per day would be suffecient. If Maggot is eating that and the other 2 pouches that is a lot. Again, unregulated cats do need to eat more then 20 cals per day and they dont process food the same. So if he is maintaining weight I would stick with what you are doing.

His weight was exactly the same as when he was diagnosed the 3 weeks previously , due back at vets next week for bloods again and to see if he needs injections etc

The formula for determining the number of calories needed per day is:

(current weight/desired weight of cat x 13.5) + 70 = calories needed per day

Obviously, this can be adjusted as needed. As stated above, unregulated cats are always hungry because they cannot properly metabolize nutrients so they are basically starving. It's okay to feed them, as long as they don't start gaining huge amounts of weight!;)
