Good morning kitties & beans :cat:

Link to yesterday's condo.

BF accidentally fed Moose the Purina DM last night for dinner. That was my fault, I forgot to put the can in the very back of the cabinet so that he wouldn't include it in the food rotation. Yet, somehow, even with a NS last night, his BG is in the blue this morning? I don't think it has anything to do with the Purina DM, but I could be wrong. Does anyone know the carb content of the Purina DM? I didn't see it on the food chart, but maybe I missed it. I know that it is not advised here on the sub, but the vets always push it...

Anyway, I am just happy to see a blue number so soon! I won't be able to give Moose a shot again tonight, but after that I will be able to get him back on his normal shoot schedule.

Hugs and head bumps! :D Have a great day!

Well, Moose is back up to his usual antics. He already earned a reduction to 0.25u. Maybe you don't even need any pens?!

I wonder if Moose realized what was going on and decided he didn't want back on the juice? ;)

HC and Karo, yep.

Moose, if you want off the juice, fine, but could you make your point on non-work days, please??? Much easier on the bean's stress level!

How long until someone can be home with him again today?

I'd probably leave some extra LC food for him as well (or more of the HC if you aren't worried about the unfamiliar food upsetting his stomach). Didn't you say you thought you were over-feeding him before? If you reduced his food in the last day or two, I'd put it back in now that he is doing this, at least for today.

Thank you Nan. That's exactly what I did before I left. I left him the other half of the can of LC from breakfast. He will eat it all immediately, but hopefully that will get his numbers up...

Ugh yes please Moose, giving mama a scare right off the bat!

I can go home @ lunch time, which is in 3 1/2 hours

I think he was missing the days of eating gravy food and decided to up his numbers a bit in hopes to get that yummy gravy again...well it worked Moose!

Wow, Moose! I was guessing that the carb count for the Purina couldn't be that high with eating some and a skipped shot. I see where someone answered the question.

When he was seen by the vet, was it just one blood test that showed he was back in high numbers?

Yes, just one test. I had tested him that morning as well.

I think that I forgot to note that the vet did give him an antibiotic shot when he was there because his gums were bleeding after she removed the tartar. Would that have an effect on anything?

Well, if there is inflammation that can certainly raise his numbers and the AB will subdue any possible infection temporarily. Do you have plans to get his teeth cleaned? It could be that is all that he needs to help him get OTJ again.

I don't as the vet did not say anything about getting them cleaned. She made it seem as though all was good after she removed the tartar build up. But I can certainly make an appointment to get them cleaned! I wonder why she did not suggest it.

It sounds like she just cleaned what she could see in the front of the mouth. Where there was some tartar, there is likely to be more. Any inflammation can keep the diabetic kitties numbers up. If it's been a while since he had them all cleaned, I would make an appointment ASAP . Also, they can use the BW he just had prior to taking him under for the cleaning. I think my vet practice will only use BW that is no older than 6 weeks. That will save you some $$

She cleaned if off of the back of his teeth on both sides. She did not say that she saw any on the front of his teeth, but that doesn't mean that there wasn't. I don't think he has ever had his teeth cleaned, so I will make an appointment for that. Thank you for letting me know about the BW! Oh, they have to put him under for the cleaning? That makes me a bit worried :( I understand why, but I wish they didn't have to.

I know, in order for them to scale under the gum to get all the tartar , they need to be under as it will be uncomfortable and the vet needs their finger, LOL Plus, they can really get a good look while in there and if there are any lesions they can take the tooth out then and there. If he's never had a cleaning then, it's time. The cleaning will help his BG numbers and be better for his heart as well.

You are 100% right, I guess because he hasn't been under since he got neutered that I am feeling nervous about it. That and his age. Although I'm sure much older cats have been put under and been just fine. It's just me being a worry wart!

Better to do a good cleaning (and get any extractions done) now than later, when he'll be even older, right? He's overall pretty healthy, so now would be the time to do it, and I agree with Bobbie that it's a strong possibility that that is what knocked him out of remission in the first place. The rapid return to form (maybe) after the antibiotic shot is pretty suggestive that there is something hidden going on...

@Stacy & Asia I picked up some of the Rad Cat yesterday. I bought two of the 8 oz containers. It says you should feed them 3 - 3.5 oz per meal (per 10 lbs).

How quickly does Asia eat through a container of Rad Cat? I imagine that you buy the larger container (I can't remember how many oz the large container was...). One 8 oz container will only cover 2 1/2 meals, so I am curious!

You make a very good point! I absolutely want to get him back in remission as soon as possible. I will make an appointment as soon as I can :)

I am currently feeding her 9 tablespoons a day broken up into 10 mini meals over 24 hours. She is 10 pounds. It's a little less than 6oz. a day. She gets extra food if she goes low, so she ends up getting a little over 6 oz. some days. I used the radcat food guideline to come up with an amount, although before I measured it precisely and was free feeding and eyeballing the amounts, it was roughly the same amount. She's old and not terribly active, so she should probably have a little less than that, but I'm not down with putting a geriatric cat that looks forward to food on a restrictive diet.

I always buy the large size, I believe it's 24 oz?

Looks like Moose is being Moose again with these numbers. :joyful:

Oh wow, many mini meals! Do you have a timed feeder? Awe, sweet Asia really loves the Radcat and has few pleasures in life, I would not reduce the amount you feed her either!

I plan to buy the large size next time, once I know if Moose likes/can tolerate it (who am I kidding? Of course he will like it, he eats anything & everything!)

He does have a flair for the dramatic, doesn't he?

I do have a timed feeder, I use it at night and during the day if I'm out. The reason for so many meals is because she has always been free fed her entire life, so I didn't want to mess with that too much if I didn't have to. Also, she gets acid stomach and will barf if she goes about 3-4+ hours without food.

I bought the smallest sizes at first too, just so I wasn't wasting them if they refused to eat a particular kind.

+9 = 116

My coworker is out today and I was covering for her so I had to take a late lunch :banghead: Moose seems to be doing just fine, but begging for food.

Purina DM wet food pate version is 6% carbs, chunky version is 10% carbs.

I second the dental. If you can get it, it’s so much easier than when they are older. Get X-rays to make sure there is nothing below the surface. Asia has tooth resorption and had to have many extractions, she was a new cat after that. I now kick myself that I didn’t go ahead and get the 2 healthy teeth she had left in the back extracted at the same time. It’s too risky to do now. :(
