Ravan is not interested in the Fancy Feast today but he did eat his Raw organic chicken! His bg is still high but i'm hoping for a Slow downward trend!

Has anyone used the Advocate bg monitor & strips? I saw it on Amazon & was surprised how inexpensive it is. I was thinking of getting it as a backup for my Relion Prime meter. The reviews looked OK ,a few said it wasn't accurate. I'd appreciate feedback if anyone has used one.

Hi Joy I was just checkin’ on you and the fabulous Ravan!

I went out and got a freestyle lite from Walmart as a backup - I can’t recommend anything yet as I have no strips for it yet

BUT I found this article about monitors meters and thought it was a good one

https://www.thediabetescouncil.com/10-popular-blood-glucose-meters-put-to-the-test/

I will say their top model requires .6 amount of blood - look for a monitor in here that only requires .3 !!!

Those numbers or requirements are listed! Hence ReliOn and freestyle both only require teeny tiny .3 blood instead of .6 !

I checked on the advocate and this is what it says

  • The Advocate ready-code plus glucose test strips allow you to easily and accurately test your blood glucose level. Redi-code test strips require small blood samples (0.7 microliters)
You might not want to go with a .6 OR .7 blood sample microliter as that is a big sample size compared to the .3 tiny microliter size required of AlphaTrak or a Relion or of Freestyle. After all we’re dealing with kitty ears

Glad he’s eating!
If you want to get a backup meter, I’d suggest getting another Prime. That way you always have the correct strips. Last week the battery on my prime showed low, so I pulled out my other one and tested.

Thanks for the advice Magic & Sharon I will get another Relion Prime meter.

Ravan was doing so good yesterday with the Fancy Feast. It's 3pm & he hasn't had food since the raw chicken this morning. Do you think he ate too much yesterday? I might have to syringe feed if he won't eat tonight!
I'm planning on keeping him on 1 unit for another 2 days to see if he might come down more. What do you guys think?

I'm pretty good now at doing the bg test but sometimes I can't get enough blood for the test? I have to poke him again(which he hates & so do I) Do the tips of his ears get dry from taking so many tests?

I'm using a 28G lancet,no pen just by hand.

Use a little Neosporin like a sheen on the ear that will help with dryness and healing

Great job on lancet some people use a bigger gauge I use same size as u I have trouble too... perhaps you and I should go to 26 gauge ( I’m scared to) but it might make huge diff - they’re pretty cheap maybe I’ll pick some up and try once

Now I know NOTHING about raw food and I am sure there are some experts so I’m all ears... however I do know one time I got samonella from raw chicken...so I’m kinda worried about raw chicken

I think you should stay on 1 U a little longer also because he’s not eating- do you have several varieties of FF?

OH! The roller Coaster is back! 3:30 bg 137 +5 I'll check again at 6:30 & 9:30 before shot. If it drops lower at shot time I don't want to give insulin. His ups & downs don't seem to be regular. Ever since the huge drop I'm too scared to shoot when is below 150

I'd be Happy if he stayed in the low 100"s

Have those SLGS guidelines printed out and by your side. They tell you everything you need to know about dosing. You can also ask here if you're unclear on what those guidelines mean.

Sharon, Decided to take a break from testing. Cats are obviously different. Ravan is avoiding me.

ANY time I reach down to pet him he cringes!

He's nearly 16 yrs old , has never been afraid of me! I want to help him & do the best for him, but I cannot have him afraid when I try to pet him!

I'll check again at 6:30pm +8 and at 10:00 pm pre shot

He's being very cautious. He's worried when I approach him. I do NOT want him stressed out! Thinking he's going to get hurt every time I touch him!

Trying to follow my "Gut" feelings about this situation. ( he's stopped coming to my bed to sleep after over 15 years!) This is VERY upsetting.I don't know if he'll ever trust me again.

He will - he just doesn’t know if you’re going to test again. Have you thought of contacting ZIWIPEAK and asking for a few free samples of their air dried beef, lamb and lamb and mackerel? Then you could try getting Ravan to associate the reward of some tidbits with a little prick of the lancet vs just you approaching him to prick his ear with no opportunity of reward?

Just a thought

Kris and Magic,
My cats have never had treats. I've never felt the need to "Treat" my cat.

I'm the mom that had cut up veggies for my Human boys as treats. ( not popular at birthday parties with their friends!) I NEVER had POP or chips etc. in my house.

I became vegetarian over 20 yrs ago so I could afford to feed my Obligate carnivores Raw meat .

My grand children are also vegetarian & do not participate in vaccinations There are NO sugary TREATs or sweet beverages in their home either . ( My son's & his Dr. wife's decision ,Not mine) I agree 100%

So when you suggest Treats for my cats It's a totally foreign concept to my way of living.

Lots of LOVE & attention is my way of showing how much I care, not treats.

OH dear, I think I will not be very Popular after you all read that! Oh well, Just being Honest. It's what I believe in .

You have to do what’s right for you ...these are only suggestions when you present problems or issues you are having with your kitty doing tests for example people like me and others merely have ideas or suggestions to help - take em or leave em - it’s all good - the most important thing is your are doing the testing and your kitty has had some good test results so I think you’re making progress

But if you complain people try and help with their ideas and solutions that work for them, that’s the purpose of a forum.

Are you just wanting to vent and not have ideas or solutions suggested?

The treats we use are freeze dried meat only, no junk in them. Colin doesn’t care for any of the treats I’ve tried, so for him it’s a bit of his regular food, small piece of liver or some chicken breast. If you don’t want to use food treats, then plenty of that love and attention will work too!

Hey JoyBee, like Sharon said, the treats are good for them treats like freeze dried meats, the equivalent to the veggies you served your kids as treats. Remember that animals are food driven and they respond to "learning" through rewards of food. The rewards you give at the test time is what he will associate the test time to and will become more tolerate of the testing. We've all been there with our kitties not wanting to have their ears poked. By telling them we are doing it for their own good isn't comprehended by them, but those treats sure will be computed by them.

Nice with the 171!

Yes, I was referring to freeze dried meat or fish treats - single ingredient, nothing else added. I should have been clearer.

I thought you were going to go to Petco and get some Pure Bites to try? I'm glad to see Ravens doing better and your doing a happy dance!

krazy4 YES I AM! (doin my Happy Dance)

Ok, all you guys, I was thinking the other way. If i give a treat & then he gets hurt, He'll associate the treat with being Hurt! Especially since he's never got a treat. After 15 yrs I poke his ear then give a treat??

He might think,OUCH! I gotta get my ear stabbed to get that. NO THANKS!

For me a Reward has always been Love & hugs That's what I think of as a TREAT!

When I was a kid I got LOTS of "TREATS" Not so much of the other!

Is the raw food you are serving balanced or are you just giving raw meat? It’s ok to give a little raw meat but any more than 10% of calories and it needs to be balanced raw. I use EZ Complete to mix with raw meat and water.

Cats vary in their carb sensitivity. For some, a really low carb food isn’t enough; for others it is. That’s part of the data you need to collect to determine what foods work to manage the insulin curve.

Marje & Gracie,
My kitties have eaten a Balanced Raw meat diet since they could chew. (Ravan will be 16 in June) 8 months ago they refused the diet they had eaten all their life? ( had blood work & Ravan has elevated lipase The vet wrote Possible pancreatitis. Peggy Sue had slightly elevated liver enzymes). I began giving them Milk Thistle & Ringers Lactate. a Month later blood work showed the readings had come way down. Peggy Sue would eat the meat if I cooked it lightly. Then Ravan refused that. Peggy Sue ( his sister) still eats lightly cooked chicken

Just recently i offered them Raw meat again & to my surprise they both ate it. A few weeks ago Ravan was not eating well at all. I tried every premium canned food I could find Including a variety of Raw meat. Rabbit, quail, & buffalo. Ravan would eat the meat for a day or 2 then refuse it.

10:15pm I just tested bg 222 Not sure what to due. am his bg was 331 1 unit dropped him to 137 I'm OK with him being in the 100's I do NOT want to be in a Panic tonight if he starts dropping too fast (he did before down from 400's to 68)

I decided to give a reduced shot. .75 instead of the 1 unit. I'll still be up checking, worried bg might start dropping. It still seems to me his up & down is not predictable. one time his lowest bg was at +9 so how can I determine a correct dose ?
